Bob Kesling Hate

What question is that?

Why isn’t Wilkerson the man…I know why, but gosh dang you should know more about UT baseball than a stat sheet at your fingertips and a few pregame interviews. He hung Helton out to dry and Todd is a rookie at broadcasting.

Yeah, Wilkerson is better for sure. It's a good question. Wonder why someone at UT isn't working on the answer. Or, maybe someone is.

Yes. Bob kept asking Todd question after leading question, trying to get him to tell some fun baseball stories or add color to the broadcast with his wealth of baseball experience and insight. Helton answered as if he was under cross examination - as brief as possible. Like he was bored or had stagefright. So Bob kept yapping away cause he wasn't getting any help from Todd, exhausting all his good questions and left with only stupid ones. As a result of the presentation imbalance, Bob came across to me as a motormouth, but I understood he felt he had to compensate. All in all, an embarrassing performance by both of them, but especially Helton.

Helton seemed totally disinterested in being there.

Yeah, and that caused a lot of the problem fans were having with Bob. Burke always volunteers information and stories for color commentator. Getting Todd to talk was like pulling teeth, and Bob came off as doing all the talking and appearing to ask a lot of stupid questions. But if your partner is a plank of wood, what are you supposed to do? Ignore him?

Made it tough for Kesling and it was obvious they haven’t worked together previously. Assume it takes some practice to gain some rapport but I personally didn’t think it was horrible.

Met him tonight, for the 2nd or 3rd time. Super nice guy, bleeds orange. I have no real hate for him. He’s just boring calling football. Better at basketball. Best at baseball (on TV, radio is Wilkerson, no contest). Anyway, cool moment tonight. I asked him, “What were you thinking you couldn’t say on TV that night that Vitello bumped the ump?” His reply, “Honestly, I thought, what the hell did you do that for?” Said in the moment he wishes CTV hadn’t done it, but in retrospect, so glad he did because it lit a bigger fire under our team that we already that we already knew was burning, but is now raging.
He’s a good guy.

I always listen to the radio broadcast anyway for baseball. Unless the game is on a “cable” channel and not streaming only the radio is about two pitches ahead. I think Wilkerson and Vince do a good job for the most part.
I listen to Vol Network radio for every UT sporting event that I attend or watch on TV (or just listen to if watching not an option). I have not listened to Kesling on any of these tv games because I'm on radio. I prefer to listen to announcers that are "on my side." This habit goes back to as long as I've had football season tickets (early 1990's). John Ward could def paint a picture and his tag lines in basketball ("String Music," "Bottom") & football (Give him 6! & "Touchdown Tennessee") feel iconic to me. I think Wilkerson does a pretty good job in baseball - when he messes up he quickly corrects. I think Kesling is fairly decent at basketball - "paints a picture" decently & his lack of enthusiasm is countered by Bert. Football.... he's too impartial for me - same raised voice for big plays whether it's UT or are opponent. I wish we'd hire someone else just for football. Not sure who.. I'd love Mike Keith but that ship sailed unfortunately.

Very neat. Great pic. Was that in MVP lounge?

Well, I live in South Carolina,. Todd Kelly is the play by play guy for them. When I heard his raspy voice, I tried to rip my ears off. I challenge any of you, try to listen to him and then report back...then apologize to Bob.

Todd Ellis. And yes he’s terrible.

funny, I thought the same thing when I posted that. its a catch 22 as I’d hate to lose Wilkerson on radio and on pre and post game shows.
I’d love to see David Clary get a shot at pxp or color. Pretty proficient at both. He’s also raised up plenty of protégés.

This, exactly.

Finally was able to catch up on some baseball. Typically I get to listen, then I usually watch highlights. I was able take the twins to the sweep game of Mississippi(They don’t like being called Mississippi.). Good times. They are 8 and are about to play their 1st year of baseball and softball. The boy twin is a natural, the girl twin has a mean streak, so she should be ok.

As for Bob, Vol fans were spoiled by John Ward, nobody is close to the standard of excellence that he set. The way he called a game, there’s no hyperbole. Chuck Norris is the John Ward of tough guys. Tiger is the John Ward of golf. Babe Ruth is the John Ward of baseball. Never had a bad call. He missed the miracle call, I wonder how much stuff got broke before he made the correct call. Only enough time to throw what was already in your hand.

It’s not just Bob that needs improvement, it’s all of them. I would put Bob in the top 25% easily compared to who’s on the radio and tv now. Some of these guys aren’t very good at all.

Bob holds his own. Struggles with names, down and distance, what actually happened, giving the score frequent enough and how much time is left, other than avoiding bias to the point of being bias for the other team, he really is better than most. I’ve turn the channel on so many radio shows due to their annoying voices. Bob’s got a regular voice, I appreciate that greatly. I can get past his areas of improvement.

Tuning in late and it might be a while before you get the score.

This Vol baseball team is fantastic. Their energy level is hot wired to TV. He is deliberate with his coaching style. I like that a lot.

He’s no John Ward, but he is generally enjoyable to listen to. Especially compared to the sloppy presentation local radios around me tend to do where I have no idea what is going on and ESPECIALLY compared to anything TV broadcasters have to say.

bigger issue is that Kessling needs a color with energy and he doesn’t always get that.
