Did anyone listen to the game last night?
On Tony Basilio's show people are saying Kessling initially said that Williams' game-winning shot would not count because the ball didn't go through the hoop before the clock hit 0:00.
Can anyone confirm this? It sounds too :loco: even for him.
I think yall are mistaking the reasoning for his comment.
I don't think he meant that comment as in to see if the basket counted, (in reference to his "See if the basket was made before time expired" comment), it was more to see if there would be any time left after the basket was made or if time expired and the game was over.
I think it was reported incorrectly that the refs were checking to see if the basket counted, because I don't think there was any doubt he released it in time, even if real-time I had no doubt. But I think they were actually checking to see if any time should be put back on the clock. That's what I'm thinking that Bob was meaning to talk about any it just got put into the conversation and sounded like he was talking about if the basket should count or not.
That's my take anyways.
the most likely explanation yet. They did the same on the telecast

I heard it live on my way home. Bob was clearly saying they were checking to see if the ball had gone in the cylinder for if the basket would count or not. He said they didn't have a monitor in front of them to check, and Bert commented that if he wasn't so old that he'd be able to to see the monitor the ref was using to review it. Bob even emphasized what they were reviewing and why.
He botched the rule badly. It's as simple as that.

they were actually checking 2 things (ball left hand and was there still time on the clock once it went thru) so he may have just gotten them confused. Or maybe he was just stupid
I'm not going to go out of my way to back Bob but he's been calling bball long enough that I would bet a substantial amount of money that he knows the rule
If you heard how he explained it you would understand. He either forgot the rule or absolutely botched explaining what they were checking. To the person listening on the radio with no TV in front of them it sounded as if they were only only checking to see if the ball had left his hand in time and if it had hit the cylinder for the shot to count.
Truthfully, after hearing him call it, I was shocked there was about half a second left when he let the ball go.
