Bob Stoops retiring

I would be more likely to buy Stoops's argument if he retired right after NSD instead of June or announced that 2017 was going to be his last season. The timing of this is very strange. There is more to this. He's either saying it isn't about health but it is, or he's retiring for reasons other than the tried and true "want to spend more time with my family."

This is great news for Mike Gundy and Tom Herman. "Big Game Bob" probably lost more big games than he won over the years but he was a good recruiter and a major figure in the conference you had to deal with. Lincoln Riley I'm sure is a good tactical offensive guy, but is he a good head coach/director of a program? I think that remains to be seen and if he doesn't win the Big 12 at least once during his first few years they'll run him off. He's only 13-14 years older than his players.

His record vs top ten opponents was 26-15. Looks like he fared pretty well in big games.

What's Saban or Urban's record against top 10 teams? Both guys have multiple national titles. Saban is 5-1 in national title games.

I'm not saying Stoops was a mediocre or bad coach - far from it. I'm saying that it is interesting that "Big Game Bob" became his moniker when there are other guys who arguably have performed better in "big games." He only got 1 title, and it was a long time ago, and he lost to Texas too much when they were down.

Interested to see how a 33 year old fares as head coach of that place.

Big shoes to fill. Even with OU falling short from time to time when predicted to do better, Stoops still got a lot of love from the fan base.

I thinks it's a combination of things:
Riley has done a great job so far and the QBs are lined up to keep rolling (Baker and then Kyler and more) so he feels comfortable to hand over the "keys" and it's his handpicked successor and he's staying in as a "Special Assistant" to help the AD and Riley.
This has been in the works for some time. Most just thought 3-4 years down the line.
Both of Stoop's son are in their senior year of HS and both are good (One has D1 offers) at football so he can go to their games and have some quality family time.
He announced right after Oklahomas move in day so he could address the new guys ('17 recruits) instead of having them left in the dark.
He was diagnosed with heart disease and saw his father die on the sidelines coaching a football game at 56.
JM2C

That makes perfect sense.

Saban is 35-22 against top ten teams
Meyer is 19-8

So Saban is 13 games over .500 against top ten teams while both Stoops and Urban are 11 games over .500.

What about Saban's record against top 10 at Alabama? He's only lost 22 games total there. Urban has only lost 21 games total at Florida and Ohio State. Their winning percentages at Alabama, Florida, and Ohio State against top 10 opponents I'm sure is much better than Stoops's.

It's more like "Big Game Bob" in the sense that he played in a lot of big games. He didn't win them, on a percentage basis, as often as some other elite coaches.

Saban's record at Alabama and LSU vs top ten opponents is 30-16. Meyer's record at Fla/OSU is 19-8, never played a top ten team while coaching at Bowling Green or Utah.

Bob Stoops was still tweeting about Oklahoma recruits 6 days ago

By: Nina Mandell | June 7, 2017 3:45 pm

If Bob Stoops knew he was leaving Oklahoma, his Twitter account certainly didn’t reflect it in recent days.

The longtime Sooners coach was tweeting about recruits and Sooners athletics as recently as 17 hours before news broke that he was going to announce his retirement.

On Tuesday night it was the Sooners’ impressive national championship win in softball:

And on Monday, a tweet of a video welcoming football players to campus on their official move-in day:

On Sunday, he retweeted these from recruits:

And last Thursday, retweeted this:

Stoops made his Twitter account public in 2013 but according to The Tulsa World he had used his private account for recruiting for years. “Stritcly recruiting. You guys can’t get on it. I restrict it to recruits. Got to. Gotta reach ’em,” he said months before making it public.

And it seems they already have several writers trying to make this look as normal as can be. Looks like a lot of smoke trying to hide where the fire is.

Meh. Oklahoma is a huge name program and most guys commit to a position coach anyway. I don't think this will affect recruiting that much.

Wasn't referring to the EFFECT...more to the seedy aspect. At best he heartily recruited these kids with the intention of POSSIBLY returning. No way this can be gauged as honest.

So both are better than Stoops on a percentage basis, did it largely playing in better conferences, and have way more rings to show for it. That's my point.

Remember when Broyles was getting free gas? That disappeared and no other players were mentioned. They closed a f'n dealership and all its data was lost...oh yeah, they used it as a way to get rid of a few subpar players and it was vapor...

There is more to this story. Coaches don't just walk away from guaranteed millions no matter how much money they've already made. And if OU is paying Stoopsie to walk away from guaranteed millions, its an even bigger issue.

But since its OU we may never know. I know he sometimes gets $#@! here but Chip Brown needs to get on this story. The okie press isn't gonna do it.
