Bowl eligibility & too many bowls

who approves these? I thought the NCAA had little to nothing to do with it.

All the NCAA does is certify it. As long as the organizing committee passes what amounts to little more than a background check, the bowl is free to begin operations.

I will never complain about having more football games on tv. Especially when many are uncommon/intriguing match ups. Jmo

The only viable argument anyone has for there being too many bowl games are fans who want their own team to get more national attention. In other words, if your team is good and you make a good bowl game then you simply don't want to share the spotlight over lesser teams. There is very little negative with having extra bowls.

Some positives:
The school gets money, more depending on the bowl.
*The team gets extra practice time.
The players get to travel, and get rewarded for effort.
Cities get extra tourism money they'd probably not see this time of year, so it's good for economics.
The coach gets a bonus.
Just in general it makes the football season longer if your team makes a bowl.

And yet, the SEC and PAC-12 still don't play each other in a yearly bowl matchup.

Seems the last PAC 12?SEC matchup was Oregon vs. UT not long ago in regular. Would be nice to see a top 10 SEC team play a top 10 PAC 12 team. Maybe Ole Miss should have to play a PAC 12 rather than Big 12 school. Maybe Ole Miss vs. Oregon and then have TCU play Oklahoma St. (or has that already happened).:ermm::dunno:

I think we need some different pairings in the bowls each year rather than have the same conferences tied to certain bowls.:eek:k:

Ole Miss would never agree to be subject to that. When it was announced that the SEC needed to schedule power 5 conference OOC opponents, Ole Miss rushed off to schedule home and homes with... Wake Forest and Cal.

Good luck with that second part. The tie-ins are from contracts the bowl committees make with each of the involved conferences (with their own financial benefits in mind). It'd be near impossible to have to renegotiate those every year with new parties involved.

TCU and Oklahoma State play every year. They're both in the Big 12.

IMO making it to a bowl game these days, is not nowhere near as special as it use to be. There's way to many bowls anymore. This bowl season really shows it. I never thought I would see the day where teams make bowl games, with a below 500 record. The $ is ruining the college game!

I doubt the players feel that way though.

If sponsors want to spend the money and schools will send their players then why limit participation?

Bowls stopped being a "reward" when they started to count towards rankings, national titles and coaches pay.

A team ranked #50 in the country is the best of the best?

Yeah I don't really care how many bowls there are. If someone is willing to pay for them, and teams are willing to play, then what does it matter?
