Bowl Games....who knew??

JMO, but the BCS ruined the bowls.

Agreed, in part.

The BCS made the other 30+ bowls feel irrelevant.

But I think the problem began when the bowls started having conference tie-ins across the board. It used to be that a few bowls had tie-ins for conference champs, and the others were mostly at-large. Some bowls had preferences (the Peach always went after the SEC, for instance), but they weren't tied into a specific order.

can't say I have marked my calendar for some of these games..

The Camellia Bowl?? where is that...and even more important...what is a Camellia?

we now have a Miami Beach Bowl, a Boca Raton Bowl, and a St Petersburg Bowl? I guess octogenarians will watch any 2 college football teams if you put them on a field.

the Bahamas Bowl? the Atlantic Ocean's answer to the Hawaii Bowl...

a Military Bowl...AND an Armed Forces Bowl?? what's on the horizon....the ROTC Bowl?

the TaxSlayer Bowl? trying to tap my prolific nerd CPA market???

Camellia Bowl - Montgomery. New bowl

Miami Beach Bowl - Miami. New bowl.

St Petersburg Bowl - St Pete, Fla. Been around since 2008

Bahamas Bowl - Nassau. New Bowl

Military Bowl - Annapolias. Been around since 2008

Armed Forces Bowl - Ft Work. Been around since 2003

TaxSlayer Bowl - Jacksonsville. Been around since 1945. Also known as Gator Bowl

Dont watch football much, do you

Exactly this.

At least there's more college football to watch. It would be considerably more boring December-January if there were only 5 or so Bowl games.

Agree x 1000.

I guess he'd rather sit around and watch Christmas movies on Lifetime than a football game, meaningless or not.

Ahhhhhhh, that boca Ratan Bowl brings me back to my childhood. So much tradition in all these bowls. I like the bowls to stick around for the also rans, but I really would like to see an 8 team playoff. Once we get there, I don't want it to change. I think 16 teams is too much. I don't want to hear the argument about how some 9-3 or 8-4 team got shafted.

No - but maybe this can help it - Anyone know the pecking order of the SEC tie in bowls ? Its a mess with the new system

2014: College Football Playoff, the Allstate Sugar Bowl or the Discover Orange Bowl then:

And for the record, new or not I'm all for the Vols to play in the Bahamas Bowl

It's like a 40,000 person stadium. It'll never happen.

I'd personally like for the Vols to play in New York City right before New Year's Eve...but that bowl tie-in won't happen either.

And it's even a bit more foggy han that. Since the CFP change,

The College Football Playoff will feature four teams playing to determine a national champion. Odds are the SEC will have at least one team in the playoff, perhaps two. The Capitol One Bowl will choose their top choice of the bowl-eligible SEC teams not in the playoff. After that, things will not be how they always were..

The SEC will determine the league representative for six bowl games in consultation with the schools and the bowl games. In other words, there will be a pool of six teams and the league will determine which fit is best.

Those games are:

Outback Bowl (vs. Big Ten)
Music City Bowl (vs. ACC or Big Ten)
Gator Bowl (vs. ACC or Big Ten)
Liberty Bowl (vs. Big 12)
Texas Bowl (vs. Big 12)
Belk Bowl (vs. ACC)

Once the SEC spots are filled in those six bowls, the Birmingham Bowl will have the first choice of available SEC teams, followed by the newly named DUCK COMMANDER Bowl in Shreveport.

So pretty much the Outback, Music City, Gator, Liberty, Texas, and Belk appear to now be more arranged/determined by who the conference wants or decides to play where in a given year, as opposed to standings.

That's why the projections are so bad this year. SB Nation is about only site that seems to realize that those 6 bowls will be determined by the conference.

That's also why I think there's a very, very good chance for UT to end up in the Belk Bowl. It's simple to put UT in one of the in state Bowls, but bowls love hotel stays. It gives them another thing to pitch as a benefit. UT selling out several games this year (and travelling like crazy) will help them improve their bowl draw, I would think.

To add to that, I don't see them sending UK, Mizzou, or a West Div. team to Charlotte if they can help it, so really, if UT is eligible they're only up against Carolina (which seems to be one of the most apathetic fanbases out there right now).

Many of the 30+ other bowls are somewhat irrelevant, or at least on the same level of an NIT game.

At least they're more interesting than reruns of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer, Rudolph's shiny new year,Frosty the snowman or the Walton's Christmas program.

That's not remotely what I said, and since I guess reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, so I'll type slowly for you and expand on my thoughts. Try to keep up.

Back in the day when bowls had names like Citrus and Orange and Cotton, a lot of times they were about schools that weren't on the top rungs of the ladders getting some exposure to other parts of the country. It was about the kids. When I was a freshman (maybe a sophomore) we went to the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl. I had never been to Houston. It was fun. After that I really enjoyed grabbing a big bowl of popcorn and watching 5 or 6 bowls a day for a few days around New Years. Sometimes they were schools that I had never heard of, but were great games to watch nonetheless. NOW.. it is all about the money. The ultimate result will be the same: Small programs will be crushed in the end. Might as well start paying the players to to give the coup de grace to collegiate athletics.

In other words... I enjoyed "meaningless" games because they meant something to somebody besides those that had money on the games. Now.. I don't care about anything after Jan 2 unless the Big Orange is in it.

Below is the exchange to which I was responding. Please tell me how you were agreeing with what I was saying. I "fixed" his post to say that it is the big money and hype that has ruined the bowl season, not just the BCS. So help a brother out here....

Not sure how anything I said intimated that I would rather watch Lifetime movies. :ermm:

Fixed your post.

That's all you posted. "Fixing" a post that reads "JMO, but the hype and huge money ruined the bowls". Its the only thing in this whole thread you commented on. Since you didnt comment any further is sounds like a bitter old woman that doesnt like all the bowl games there are now.

No, my reading comprehension is just fine. Your writing skills sucks. If you want someone to understand what you are saying then put it in words, not "fixed your post". FYI -it wasnt until your menstrual induced tirade that your actual postion on the bowls was reflected, which to a point I actually agree with. While the bowls have gone the way of a reward at the end of the season to more of a means to finance the athletic department of the schools and conference, I still enjoy both watching and going to the games. They are still a fun vacation to go on and watching on tv gives you match ups that would not regularly happen in the season.
