Breaking: TX, OU Reach Agreement to Join SEC in 2024

Once the 3-6-6 model is announced with a 9 game schedule I’ll be interested to see if the timing of the games changes. For example, if we get Vandy would that game be moved from the last game of the year to another time in September or October? I’m guessing not, but I’m interested to see if we start scheduling more first weekend conference games. I think the Big 10 has done a good job of starting the season w/ some interesting conference games. I’m hoping the SEC will do the same .
I would like to see Florida play in Knoxville in any month other than September once in my life.

Exactly who said each team gets to pick a rival ? That’s never come out of Birmingham that I’m aware of.
Seem to be two camps on here - one group wanting Kentucky and Vandy - presumably because that’s the easiest possible schedule (otherwise makes no sense ) and one group that really wants to keep gators ….. I’m in group two, but not so much that I really want UF, would be fine with UGA or Texas- but my selfish end is to have (or keep) another good yearly rivalry making the season better - said differently, a yearly home and away with Bama, Vandy, Florida (Texas !) is much more appealing than Bama, Vandy, and KY…..

End of day, no way in hell the SEC lets a team projected to be a powerhouse going forward get two permanent games with the worst two teams in the conference.

I don't think it really matters what three teams Vols play every year. You are still playing everyone else every other year. IMO the 108 times Vols have played Vandy and Kentucky will determine their every year opponents. Anything is possible I guess but needless to say no one in the SEC will have easy schedule.

So you want the 2 best programs in the country on our schedule full time and would most likely have to beat them 3 times to win a National Title? I’m all for competition, but why make it that much more difficult?
Since when is Florida top 2?

KY is far from the worst in the conference, they are a mid-level team. The two worst teams of the last decade are Vandy and SCAR/Mizzou/Arky with SCAR and Arky trending up. Bama/Kentucky/Vandy gives Tennessee a top 3 team, a middle 6 team and a bottom 5 team to play.

There is also the politics involved: If we don't play Vandy every year, the politicians get involved. Imagine having to reshuffle the SEC rivalry deck in a few years because the state legislature mandated that Tennessee and Vandy play each other annually?

In addition, my guess is that the oldest SEC members get priority selection over new members, so Vandy and Kentucky have that going for them.

Also, look at from Vandy and Kentucky perspective and it's not even close that Tennessee is their long running number one rivalry. You can't just kick the cellar dwellers out to the curb, especially when they are SEC original members.

Besides, it's nice for the Middle and West Tennesseans to have a game in Nashville every year other year.

When they go to this new schedule are they still going to have east and west divisions or are they going to do away with that like basketball did? Didn't the Commissioner already say awhile ago they weren't going to do pods?

He said probably no divisions

No divisions or pods.

It will either be an 8 game conference schedule with 1 permanent opponent & 7 rotating opponents or 9 games with 3 permanent & 6 rotating opponents.

Top 2 teams will play in championship game.

There has been no schedule announcement. Nothing is known. Only specu-guessing up to this point.

I'd hope we keep Alabama. Florida is not necessary. No connection there, other than the SEC East. And if divisions go by the wayside, then UF can too. I'd vote for Alabama Vanderbilt and Kentucky as our three permanents. And if it's only one constant, then i would go Alabama. The schedule will be crazy at any rate.

Let's look at this from a different standpoint. Assume each team gets to prioritize and select one must have annual rivalry:

TN: AL - 3rd Saturday
AL: Aub because they know TN will pick them
Aub: AL or UGA if they know Bama picks them
UGA: Aub
FL: UGA
KY: TN 2nd longest SEC Rivalry
Vandy: TN in-state rival and probably 3rd longest running SEC Rivalry
SCAR: UGA or KY
Mizzou: OK or Ark
MissST: Ole Miss
Ole Miss: LSU or Arky if they know MissState picks them
Arky: LSU, TX or Ole Miss
LSU: Arky, Ole Miss or MissSt
aTm: uTa
uTa: OK
OK: uTa

Tennessee would have 3 1st Rivalry selections as would UGA and TX. All very justifiable selections. And we wouldn't have to worry about lawmakers getting involved regarding in-state Vandy game because they would.

UGA would prioritize UF over Auburn, actually.

Has the SEC Office indicated when they expect to announce the 2024 schedule now that OU and Texas are moving in that year?

I'm sure there would be some back room dealing. Fox example:

GA picks Aub knowing FL picks GA,
Aub picks AL, AL picks TN, TN picks Vandy, Vandy picks KY, KY picks TN
Same for TX getting aTm and OK picking TX
