I"d never, ever listen if Mike Keith were doing play by play. A screaming megalomaniac.
It's weird Bob is bashed for not being a big enough homer and unexcitable, and then there's people that hate Mike because he's the exact opposite. Just goes to show, can't please everyone.

Love to have Mike Keith back......dude is a stellar announcer. Afraid Titans wont let him go though and if I remember correctly he actually has the title of VP of Titans Broadcasting. Going to be hard to get him back.

Keith will retire with the Titans. He has been with them since it's origins in Tennessee. He might make a rare special appearance for the Vols here and there.

Hubbs is a true professional.

I’d take Wilkerson and be happy with it
John Wilkerson with Jason Swain might work.

(I've heard a high school football broadcast with Wilkerson on the call and he wasn't as smooth calling football like he is baseball. He was good but not what I was expecting from him)

I think a lot of Vol fans have been a little tough on Bob over the years. I've always heard don't follow the legend. Follow the guy who follows the legend. Anyway Mike isn't going anywhere. He's a highly regarded NFL announcer. I doubt if there is more than a handful of college announcers in the country that wouldn't trade places with him.

I listened to him do a HS football game last week. I regret to inform you that he was significantly worse than Bob
Well, I think he’s ok. So, here were are, two people with two different opinions.

I also don’t think Kesling is as terrible as he’s made out to be. We could definitely do better, but the guy has taken a beating for 25 years for not being John Ward. He doesn’t manufacture emotion like Keith, so he comes off full. I get that.

Well, I’d prefer Wilkerson in basketball more than football. I’d prefer Ramon Foster or Shuler as a partner to whoever did play by play. Nothing against Swain, though.

The time will soon come that ole Bob “Checkerboard” decides it’s time to step aside, along with Pat.
When that time comes, AD needs to bring back Mike Keith as play by play and add Brent Hubbs as color commentator. They both learned from the best John Ward. And in my honest opinion would be a huge upgrade.
I didn’t realize Hubbs background before I watched this video.

Mike is a great announcer and even better guy. But I don’t think he’s leaving the Titans. If he doesn’t, I’d go with John Wilkerson.

IMO the radio broadcast will never meet Vol Fans as a whole expectations in todays era. When there were very few TV games it was the whole States tie to the Vols and Lindsey Nelson & later John Ward, who could slowly do it their way with no TV comparison (visual not announcers)and I may add they did it with much aplomb. Vol fans sat on the edge of their seat waiting for every utterance. Now days every games is on TV and I can see ppl saying Wards saying 10 -9-8-5-4-3-2-1 give him 6, what did he do, he scored a Volunteer Touchdown, and we are practically lining up for extra point by the time he's finished. I say this because the very few games we had on TV I heard some bringing up how slowly he could look over the game and choose his words and how he was almost always behind. Those times IMO were great but they shall never reappear, that's dust in the wind. So whoever gets Bob's spot will still never measure up no matter how good they are to their employers, it is what it is. JMO

Yeah, Brent is okay. If he chooses he wants to stay. He's commented several times - retirement is not that far off.
As for Keith - he turned an offer down to come back. Not sure where you were or how old you are. That's that...
Next, the AD does NOT hire the production staff for Vol Network. It's owned by Learfield. Now, he can offer input,
but that's about it. Bob worked for JP after a short career with WBIR - 10.
Thanks for the insight.
After I posted originally I realized Vol Network hires commentators.
When did Keith turn down the job? Bob took over immediately after Ward retired.
I read that Ward actually endorsed Keith to take over but they chose “Checkboards” instead.
Honestly had a run in with Bob at a barbershop once when he was still doing sports with WBIR. Long story but he seemed like a jerk to me. Walked in and cut in front of everyone, like he owned the place. Of course that was 35 years ago!

I’ve always thought Kesling was ok in football. Not as much in basketball. Basketball is tougher to call imo. Thank you to OP for posting the interview with Hubbs. Even though I saw the thread yesterday I am just now watching the interview. Always liked and respected him. I’d prefer him 3-7 on 99.1 to what is currently there but I know that’s not if interest to him.

I remember him doing JP games when I was young. We didn’t have cable so the only football I got was from the local channels. That’s why I, (and so many others my age or older) have such strong feelings about Ward/Anderson. I would get whatever game JP had and any other local game that day , and then it was Ward and Anderson all day as I played football on my backyard.
