vollattic,
Sometimes you have to pull the orange colored glasses off and be objective when commenting on our favorite team.

It's not orange colored glasses. Some fans are just convinced that we need a QB who can run around. If watching Rick Clausen put up 35 point a game doesn't convince you otherwise, nothing will.

Option offenses are all the hype... And I believe they do work, but they have to be run with an extremely high level of efficiency coming from all positions. Schaeffer has not shown that he senses everything going on around him, which is what a good option qb needs. If he can get his head on straight, I would consider it... Except that would require rebuilding the playbook from the ground up.

IF there is a QB contraversy next fall it won't include Schaeffer.

Good decision Brent, we love you here in Big Orange country! Considering all the hype and crap he went through he has handled him self very well! I commend you Brent and I will continue to root for you.

Tennessee is not going to an option attack that will be the day.

Talking heisman for Riggs or Ainge isn't unthinkable, they both should excellence this year.

GO VOLS, I don't think I can wait for next year. Looks like I'll be starting a new NCAA football season on PS2.

I would have spoken to him more if I had the chance, but I had to get to class.

That's a good boy.

Volattic,
YOu can't get any more Vol Faithful than me. There has to be a point when you have an objective conversation about the good AND BAD about your team.

Put this in perspective. If Brent Schaeffer was all we had at quarterback this year, we would be7-4 at best, no SEC championship game and looking at the Peach Bowl. HOWEVER, If Brent Schaeffer was the only quarterback we had, I would look back and say he was a freshman, made some good progress and would be excited about his returning as a starter next year.

The fact of the matter is, Brent Schaeffer is third best behind Ainge and Clausen.

Just because someone states this on the board, doesn't mean they don't love the Vols.

Volattic - nobody is bad mouthing anyone, just stating opinion based on observation. Personally, I hope I'm dead wrong and Schaeffer develops into the next Donovan McNabb . . . but I'm not holding my breath.

The main argument for validating Clausen as the starter next year is his knowledge of the playbook and field management. That being said, if Ainge and/or Schaffer are physically better for the job, and they have an entire offseason to not only learn the complete playbook but also work with the recievers, would that not put them miles ahead of Clausen come next Fall? I appreciate the job Rick did and glad Fulmer is not immediately throwing him back to the bench, but over the course of a season I don't think he holds up to the talent and schedule we will face for 2005. I think this "open" Qb race is more of a recruiting tool for the youngest Clausen and also extra incentive for Ainge and Schaffer to stay focused during the offseason.

If Schaffer ever catches a pass. That will be the end of his Qb career at UT. They will promise a few plays to let him throw from the WR postion but otherwise will phase him out and build his WR talents. I think he has heard the Mike Vick hype to much to let that happen. He won't move to WR.

great comment GaVol. The rest of the Schaeffer lovers can't see why he must move to another position or another institution. Thanks for my back. I saw Tennessee play 117 consecutive games in person, home and road, and make my comments in the best interests of our team. I know everyone has not agreed to my points this year but questioning my loyalty is absurd. The coaches will make the personel decisions to best give us our best chance to win. This decision will be made with either Clausen, Ainge and Crompton. I feel this is the order they will go into spring practice also.

I have a feeling that a lot of the fans that still want Schaeffer at QB are the same fans who were screaming when Fulmer benched Brandon Stewart in favor of the skinny kid from New Orleans.

With his mindset, I'd tend to emphasize the latter. Again, I'd hate to see him go, but it's looking almost inevitable unless he has one heckuva off-season.

I like Brent Shaffer and for the longest while I thought he should have been our season starter...I didn't like what I seen from Ainge but then I got to seeing him play some more and then he grew on me and I think he should be our starter with Clausen 2nd stringer...Ainge won me over as a fan in the Florida game....He showed how good he really was under pressure...And 4th and 13(or whatever it was)for the game to get us in field goal position is pressure..If not I don't know what is

But I think Shaffer won't ever be our QB...It's not really Tennessee football to have a QB that scrambles...As long as I can remember we've not really had a QB that liked to scramble other than Tee Martin.....Shaffer needs to move to WR or returning punts or kicks...He's too good not to be out on the field every weekend...If Brent is our QB next season though, I'm fine with it...Just like Ainge it will take time to grow on me

Attic, we all want the VOLS to be better. If BS is the weak link at the QB position, then we need to address it.

If your car is running rough, dont you do something to try and make it run better? Or, do you say "what a great car I have" and keep on driving?

You know....this is the silliest argument. We have 4 QBs returning for next season.

A. Clausen...obviously ahead of the pack in ability to utilize our offense, manage games and get the ball consistently to our play makers. AAverage speed and arm.

B. Ainge, Peyton like arm and build. Deep threat. Inexperience kept him from good game management and utilization of the base offense. Good upside.

C. Schaeffer, great mobility, average arm but also shows some upside. Inexperience also prevents him from being a good game manager.

D. Crompton..best physical tools of the 4. No SEC experience, no knowlege of the base offense, never played at the speed of the game in the SEC, no experience reading defenses.

What is silly about these arguments is this....none of us will have a choice on the starting QB next year or anyone's PT. We are in a very strong situation where our QBs, WHO ALL HAVE SOMETHING TO OFFER, will have to fight like Navy Sailors to play next fall. Hell I hope they all come back stronger, faster and smarter than before. And yes, RS is capable of putting BS own package into our offense. That is dangerous to our foes. This is a good thing folks, enjoy it rather than fight over it!!!

SERMON OVER

:D
