lol how you figure that? one of the largest recruiting budgets in the country, best facilities, SEC, winning tradition, one of the best college programs of all time, and yet all of a sudden we can only get up and comers or mid major coaches? lol

Can get vs will get.
Maybe the 3rd time is the charm.

I want Gruden more than anyone but its not going to happen. When we hired Kiffin and Dooley both neither were anyone's first or second choice, the fact is no one wanted the job and I would like to think that has changed but I do not think it has. The expectations here are to high and recruiting is difficult because you have to travel more due to the lack of div 1 talent in the state of Tn high school football. Coaches like Peterson from BSU are more comfortable at small schools where they are king as long as they beat the cupcakes on their schedule and get a good bowl game every few years. No one wants to come to here and have to deal with the pressure from the fan base to compete in the SEC with BAMA, LSU, UF and all other top tier teams in the conf, Saban has set such a high bar by winning so quick at Bama that now all SEC teams expect a coach to come straight in and win a title in 2 years and it is not realistic.

I just want a coach that wants to be here for more reasons than the money, a coach that wants to compete with Saban and Miles. Someone that wants to be here for the long haul and not jump ship as soon as they build us up. Like Kirby Smartt I worry if we got him he would jump at the UGA job as soon as Richt is fired.

I'm hoping for Strong, Patterson, or Peterson. Those are the most realistic choices on the market. Some would add James Franklin. I'm just praying we stay away from people like Kirby Smart or other Sabanites!

I'm not sure why people are dismissing Venables out of hand. Obviously, he's not the first choice (that would be Gruden); maybe not even the second or third choice; but he's actually got a pretty good track record.

I hadn't really thought about him to be honest, but not a bad person to add to the list. I'd pick him over Kirby Smart, fwiw.

There was a time where I may have said this, but he had some really horrible defenses toward the end in Oklahoma.
