There's a lot of truth to that old saying: "Defense wins championships." Under Charlie Weiss, most of ND's highly rated recruits were offensive players. Under Weiss, ND did not have a good enough defense to successfully compete against better competition. Until ND puts a quality defense on the field, they will continue to struggle against good teams.

It's easy to blame it on the defense this year, but the offense has been worse the last couple of years.

Maybe you're just saying that because you realize you're pulling in the conference's lowest ranked class with the exception of Vanderbilt.

Good point, but bear in mind that good offenses and good defenses tend to help one another. A good defense gives your offense more posessions and better field position. In turn, a good offense helps keep your defense from having to be on the field as much and helps keep them out of bad situations, such as turnovers in your own territory. After Weiss ran out of Willingham's defensive players he never fielded a highly talented defense or one that played with speed and tenacity.
