Just think Hamilton could have hired Brian Kelly instead of Dooley. Wonder where we would be now. He is undefeated in his third season. Hamilton was a complete idiot. Why would you hire Dooley & give him a 5 million buyout over Kelley who had a proven track record. JMO

Yeah and he passed over Sumlin (Texas A/M) also. I heard Hammy didn't think Kelly could recruit. I think he is doing ok now.

Let's see... Hamilton humiliated Fulmer, passed on Kelly and Patterson (because he reminded him of Fulmer), hired Kiffy boy, watched Kiffy Boy leave in the easiest way possible, then went on to hire what could be described as the most desperate incompetent hire in the history of the NCAA... That man is beyond fail.

I think Kelly is a great college coach but he is fixing to get Oregon in alot of trouble soon. He will bolt to the NFL probably after this year to avoid the hammer that is getting ready to drop on the Ducks. Sometimes it's just not worth the trouble.

Playing devil's advocate here? has anyone everpublicly said that they wanted the UT job? (Sumlin or kelly) or does everyone just assume we could've had them?

I don't know that this necessarily refutes your post, OP, because it's technically still correct...but, the Kiffin hire was during Kelly's interest. By the time we got to Dooley, Kelly was already out of the picture (Notre Dame). Sumlin was indeed in play though. Oh well, at least Dooley was a good "cultural fit," if by that we mean white Southerner.

ND recruits itself like SC. ND has two guys on staff that recruit Fla and Cali very well who were leftover from the last 2 staff's. Many parents don't care for BK according to a few recruiting guys at 247. They get their pick of NY/NJ and Chi kids...any Catholic kids with Top 100 talent usually pick them also. Not really a hard job to recruit; more about getting the kid thru admission process.

Volprof is correct, Kelley was available during the Kiffin cycle, not Dooley.

Hamilton passed on Kelly because Kiffy said he could bring his defensive genius daddy.

Kelly will be the coach everyone is compared to for the next 10-15 years. He wanted to come to Tennessee and Hamilton wouldn't hire him.

The more time that goes by the more amazed I become at how bad Hamilton really was. It's mind boggling what a true idiot the man was. But, we paid him $1MM to walk away to who's the real idiot, I guess.

Our current AD seems to be having a hell of a time landing Gruden. If Jon was interested, we should have heard something positive by now.

JMO but the delay could be more about splash(SECCG....Foley announced Muschamp day of game) or Gruden getting most of his staff together before it goes public. Bringing NFL guys is a different game then hiring college guys.

Brian Kelly would have left us and bolted to ND just like Kiffin !! He is a bastard !! Summlin is a miss but he wasn't anything back when we hired Dooley...Summlin's stock rose last year after two good houston seasons !! I think AlGolden was a miss !!

Gruden is a very long shot. I ask myself why would Gruden even want to come here? He already makes more than 4M a year for a cushy job, and if he was ever to consider leaving ESPN, he would go to the NFL. I doubt he will come back to college ball.
The math just does not add up. :cray:

Sumlin had a 10-4 record while Dooley had a 4-8 record. If someone can explain this other than Hamilton being a complete idiot, I'd like to understand it.

We don't want, nor will we hire, Al Golden. He is already under a serious investigation involving a former Ponzi scheme operative and payments to a third party to help in recruiting at Miami. They may just get the NCAA Death Penalty. Stay away...far away from Al Golden.

Kelly would've been a good hire but I doubt he would have the same outcome at UT. Because he is getting ready to find out what playing in the SEC is like. As bad as I hate it I believe Bama will beat UGa. If you give Saban a month to prepare for a team I don't think many people would be able to beat him.

This, and the fact that Kiffin had just train wrecked our program and no coach would have anything to do with it. People ASSUME Sumlin would have come here. This was one of the worst jobs in the country when Dooley took it over, and it's now a very attractive one.
