1. What a showing, I’ll be the first to admit that being down Phillips & JJJ against the #1 team in the country I wasn’t optimistic, I was scratching my head trying to figure out why and how we were favorites. Somehow Vegas was able to measure the heart and grit of this team when the rest of us couldn’t, kudos to them because these Vols showed a whole lot of it tonight.

2. Tennessee had 1 way to win this game, and that was get physical, lock you up defensively, and make one of the nations best offenses work for everything…mission accomplished. Everyone deserves credit, but I will single out Jahmai Mashack, my goodness, not often you can point to someone who played 27 minutes and didn’t score a point and say you might be the MVP. He absolutely made Miller’s night hell, a Top 3 draft pick, I don’t have final numbers but seems like Miller might’ve only scored 4-6 points against Mashack, absolutely incredible. Hate to put a negative spin on it but if he can find an offensive game he has all the tools to be something, he is such an elite defender, it’s wild.

3. This team goes as ZZZ goes, look at his numbers in wins vs. losses, that simple…he wasn’t perfect offensively, just 4-11 in fact, but 8 assists with 0 turnovers and played some great defense as well. He broke things down and harassed their guards all night, he stayed in with 3 fouls and avoided a quick 4th which might’ve lost us the game, that is big. We need him, we can spell him for 2 minutes a half, but to be at our best we need ZZZ at his best for 35+ minutes a night.

4. Just gonna lump this into one, our 5, this is about our 5’s…I don’t envy Barnes, you just don’t know. Nkamhoua is struggling again, Aidoo has arguably his best game of his career after a bad stretch, Awaka disappears after everyone wants more of him, and Plavsic is strong and efficiency after seeing his minutes diminish. All our 5’s have a role and serve a purpose, good luck picking night to night or even possession by possession, it’s got to be maddening for Rick. With that said, well done Aidoo & Uros tonight, they were very good and we don’t win tonight without them, you see the ceiling for Aidoo and it excites you, that guy can be something special.

5. This team needed this obviously, what’s maddening is you’re 2 buzzer beaters away from being 22-4(11-2), likely #1 in the country and right behind Bama for SEC regular championship, such is life. I say that to point out that maybe it’s not doomsday, maybe this team hasn’t quit like many in this fanbase have? If you can beat the #1 team in the country without 2 of your better players you’re a good team, does that mean you’ll make a E8 or F4, of course not, but it proves the potential is there. This team needs to get healthy, we need to find our groove and get all our pieces working together as we head into March. Lock up a 2/3 seed and get yourself in a good spot while getting healthy, that’s what is important, we’ve proven we can play with the best in the country (wins over #1, #5 & #6) so get healthy, find our best basketball, and find some consistency.

Maddening is the only way I can describe this team. Like a great rollercoaster....hold on tight and enjoy the ride.
The Vols offense is maddening, I agree. But, we are 2 last second 3 pointers away from being 22-4 and are 20-6. A top-10 team for most of the year. Seems like the rollercoaster stays winning and only has an occasional dip, although we got double dipped last week.

It's amazing that we beat Kansas and Alabama without JJJ this season. The lack of turnovers and forcing turnovers won the game for us.
It’s not surprising because JJJ is perhaps the biggest enigma offensively on this team. He’s not a good enough outside shooter to rely on consistently yet he rarely adjusts his game when it’s not his night. 0-6 on 3’s? So what, let’s shoot a 7th. On the nights he’s bad, we’re bad. This team has played better for the most part this season when he’s not out there. I can’t believe that it’s just coincidental.

Several fantastic performances tonight so not sure who I’d give the MVP to.

So I’ll go with the defense. They stifled a very potent offense.

Honorable mention to the refs. For letting both teams play physical basketball.

An upcoming two game road trip to Lexington and College Station will not be easy so if Aidoo can give Tennessee this type of performance every night, I like Tennessee's chances of possibly getting a sweep.

Mashack does not need to worry about scoring any points and he and Aidoo set the tone on the defensive end of the court.

Terrific win tonight and this will give the team a lot of momentum headed into the back end of a very brutal schedule.

Agree with all of this. This game was won with sheer will. I didn't think we would have the depth to last in the 2nd half, but we did.

I go with Barnes game plan. Obviously thought they could bully Bama bigs and they did and play very physical on defense and hope refs let it go and they did. As he said after game , that doesnt work unless effort(Mashack) is there.

It’s been wild to watch this season where game to game, you have absolutely no idea where a good chunk of our points will come from.

Players emerge and disappear on a rotating basis. And honestly, Barnes has handled it about as well as imaginable. Everybody gets action and he rides the hot hand.

We’ve seen a lot of closing lineups lately that aren’t set in stone, but are who has been good in the game.

To piggyback off this point a bit.

Of all the games and all the teams to

- play a lot of double big
- to whip out the seldom used zone

This is not where I expected to see it, or for it to work. But here we are. Huge props to Barnes and the entire staff for that.
Bingo. And not only that, the confidence and commitment to stick to it after Bama hits a 3 on three straight possessions. Most coaches would abandon that thing in a New York minute. Gregg Polinsky did a great job on the scout, Barnes did a great job to have confidence in his team and not deviate from it, and the guys did a great job executing something they e probably worked on less than 15% of the time in practice.

And yet, a large vocal portion of our fanbase think he can't coach his way out of a wet paper bag. There is absolutely ZERO stars on this team. There might be one NBA player in the whole lot of them. Injuries have hampered us all year. No consistency on the offensive end or a player you can count on to get a bucket whenever they want, and yet, they've beaten the #1, #5, and #6 teams in the country, are 5-1 vs the AP top-25, and sit at 20-6 in mid February.

Yo what about ZZ dribbling around the entire half court weaving in and out of defenders and then dishing dimes!! That guy just doesn't tire out. He's so short and stays so low that nobody can steal the ball from him.

BTO is right and we need him in 35 mpg. He has the stamina to do it but not fouling out or getting into foul trouble and being forced to sit out is the worst case scenario for this team.
