BTO’s Alabama Postgame Report

ZZ with 15 pts 8 assists
Santi with 15 pts 8 rebs
Aidoo with 12 pts 11 rebs
Mashack with shutdown performance

Needed a game like this from multiple people to pull off what happened last night. Need this every game moving forward. We sure can't count on ON for consistency. Hope we can start getting that performance from Aidoo more often.

We are absolutely going the way that ZZ goes. When he plays unemotional or lethargic, we lose.

The officiating was not bad both ways imo. We got just about every call our way. They let the teams get physical, which will always help UT.

To piggyback off this point a bit.

Of all the games and all the teams to

- play a lot of double big
- to whip out the seldom used zone

This is not where I expected to see it, or for it to work. But here we are. Huge props to Barnes and the entire staff for that.

Seems to be that Barnes was rolling the dice a bit, decided that we weren't gonna get beat at the rim, and Bama was gonna have to get hot from 3 to beat us. Which they didn't. Largely because Mashack knew what flavor of gum Miller was chewing.

Everybody is talking about the defense, Mashack and the Vols put on Miller, last night. Deservedly so. But, we did an even better job on Sears, imo. I've watched Bama about 5 or 6 times, this year. Sears has been by far, their 2nd best player behind Miller. Vols held Sears to 2 points, 1-6 FGs and 0-3 from three. Mad impressive

UPLAV=with 10 pts 4 rebs & 2 assist in 13 minutes, I know he's not liked had a good game though he & Aidoo = 12 points, 11 rebounds in 27 minutes
27 + 13 = 40 minutes from the 5 spot with 22 points and 15 rebounds that's a winning recipe from the 5.

I’ve never seen ZZ play a lethargic game. I’ve seen him make some bad fouls and bad passes, but I’ve never seen him disinterested. As for the refs, they missed plenty of fouls on Bama. Their use of shoulders would make Travis Henry proud.

Great write up b
1. What a showing, I’ll be the first to admit that being down Phillips & JJJ against the #1 team in the country I wasn’t optimistic, I was scratching my head trying to figure out why and how we were favorites. Somehow Vegas was able to measure the heart and grit of this team when the rest of us couldn’t, kudos to them because these Vols showed a whole lot of it tonight.

2. Tennessee had 1 way to win this game, and that was get physical, lock you up defensively, and make one of the nations best offenses work for everything…mission accomplished. Everyone deserves credit, but I will single out Jahmai Mashack, my goodness, not often you can point to someone who played 27 minutes and didn’t score a point and say you might be the MVP. He absolutely made Miller’s night hell, a Top 3 draft pick, I don’t have final numbers but seems like Miller might’ve only scored 4-6 points against Mashack, absolutely incredible. Hate to put a negative spin on it but if he can find an offensive game he has all the tools to be something, he is such an elite defender, it’s wild.

3. This team goes as ZZZ goes, look at his numbers in wins vs. losses, that simple…he wasn’t perfect offensively, just 4-11 in fact, but 8 assists with 0 turnovers and played some great defense as well. He broke things down and harassed their guards all night, he stayed in with 3 fouls and avoided a quick 4th which might’ve lost us the game, that is big. We need him, we can spell him for 2 minutes a half, but to be at our best we need ZZZ at his best for 35+ minutes a night.

4. Just gonna lump this into one, our 5, this is about our 5’s…I don’t envy Barnes, you just don’t know. Nkamhoua is struggling again, Aidoo has arguably his best game of his career after a bad stretch, Awaka disappears after everyone wants more of him, and Plavsic is strong and efficiency after seeing his minutes diminish. All our 5’s have a role and serve a purpose, good luck picking night to night or even possession by possession, it’s got to be maddening for Rick. With that said, well done Aidoo & Uros tonight, they were very good and we don’t win tonight without them, you see the ceiling for Aidoo and it excites you, that guy can be something special.

5. This team needed this obviously, what’s maddening is you’re 2 buzzer beaters away from being 22-4(11-2), likely #1 in the country and right behind Bama for SEC regular championship, such is life. I say that to point out that maybe it’s not doomsday, maybe this team hasn’t quit like many in this fanbase have? If you can beat the #1 team in the country without 2 of your better players you’re a good team, does that mean you’ll make a E8 or F4, of course not, but it proves the potential is there. This team needs to get healthy, we need to find our groove and get all our pieces working together as we head into March. Lock up a 2/3 seed and get yourself in a good spot while getting healthy, that’s what is important, we’ve proven we can play with the best in the country (wins over #1, #5 & #6) so get healthy, find our best basketball, and find some consistenc

Great write up. I enjoyed it very much but don’t disappear after a loss. I still would like to see your opinion. I know that can be hard but you analyze the game well. I enjoy it.

I'm not sure the zone really worked. They hit 2 threes in a row and then we went away from it. Two bigs certainly did work, but that was more of a product of Bama's roster. They went big, so we could match it. Against Missouri, going big hurt is tremendously. Playing Mashack at the 4 in the second half of that one was the reason we came back, and Key obviously getting hot.

We haven't had the consistency from JJJ and Philips offensively. And Scovi/Key haven't been too hot (Scovi from FT, and Key from everywhere else). If we can get them going into March while ZZZ keeps playing at this Level, not turning the ball over, we can go all the way. Big if's but this is a team that can win it all imo. Could just as easily have an off night and get knocked out early but I think our D will carry us to sweet 16 at least.

Our shooting wasn't the greatest, but we played very good round ball; no dumb turnovers, or dumb fouls. Our bigs didn't have stone hands. I guess the only wtf play of the game was Awaka missing the point blank bunny, but again I like him. Speaking of Awaka; he has now made 1 of his last 8 FT's. Unbeliveable.

Yo what about ZZ dribbling around the entire half court weaving in and out of defenders and then dishing dimes!! That guy just doesn't tire out. He's so short and stays so low that nobody can steal the ball from him.

BTO is right and we need him in 35 mpg. He has the stamina to do it but not fouling out or getting into foul trouble and being forced to sit out is the worst case scenario for this team.
I know she was wearing heels, but did you notice after the game he was shorter than the petite girl interviewing him??

This is your best post this year to date!
I missed you the last couple of games ... I assumed that you were too disappointed to bother posting ... hope all is well with you!
Finally, You and I are mostly on the same page regarding the 5s.
I think ON does not have enough Grant W in him enough of the time. When he is on ....he is a beast ... did you see the extraordinary dunk! One handed sideways!
Here's hoping that Jahmai had his coming out party last night!
I keep expecting the 5s to improve and they have ... but nobody has just jumped to the front ripped off their shirt and shown a big S just yet. But that was a huge game from Aidoo and even UP played a very strong back up role.

The first lost on a last second shot you can chalk up to 'luck' or the basketball 'gods' and as a player dismiss it.
The back to back games ... you have to look at yourself in the mirror and say to yourself ... that will not happen again. We are not putting this team in a place that that can happen to us again ... and the defense was superb against Alabama. (How many of us ... worried that the shot chucked up by Bama at the end of the half was going in... I know I did.)
As you said, Mashack gets the lion's share of the credit.
FWIW, looked to me like when we left them open on 3 point shots ... they buried most of them. So, it was NOT an off night for them .... VOLS made it a tough night for them.

Always looking for your posts BTO ... keep em coming.

I love JJJ and what he brings to the defensive end and on the boards, but I think this offense flows better when he’s not chucking up a 30-foot brick with 15 on the shot clock every other possessions.

At least use some semblance of factual information if you’re going to make accusations about a player. This was a lazy attempt at bashing 3J on the offensive end.

I've been a Uros basher at times, but he was terrific last night. Those two forced turnovers on inbounds plays were huge, too, plus that one save on the crazy scrum.

Yeah, the use of zone in the 2nd half to (my speculation for the reasoning) save legs for the end of the game and keep ZZ from another foul was a great move.

I especially like Aidoo had this game against some very lengthy, athletic guys and denied those pesky guards when they got a little deep.

If memory serves, we did it when we had double bigs out which makes sense. Uros especially isn’t isnt a switchable defender, so it allowed us to worry less about mismatches and better leverage those big guys to defend the corner perimeter better.

Bama had 19 turnovers resulting in 26 points for the good guys yet only score a total of 68 points.

Yikes!

Basketvols had shutdown Mashack on BMiller and that was awesome but...

if we don't get improvement on offensive end the season could very possibly end on bad note.

That's a Halfull analysis.
