BTO’s Auburn Postgame Report

Why is it always Tennessee against the refs? Every game, it's the same comment. The SEC refs are just bad-----for every team----that's just the way it is.
When you're a defensive team and not very explosive offensively it's almost always gonna seem that way. Heavily offensive teams will draw lots of fouls heavily offensive teams tend to get called for more. 1+1=2

Where do the students sit in the arena? Are they close to the court or no? Watching the first half on TV, I see a lot of older fans sitting fairly passively in the, say, 20 rows behind the UT bench Watching the Vols on TV, I don't see the students going crazy close to the court as you always see with Duke and other schools.
Yeah, on tv you see a lot of blue hairs sitting. No excitement, but the student section today was jumpin. I've been to a lot of football games but the game today ranks very high on my list. TBA was electric, proud me and my family could attend. Was definitely worth the drive

QUOTE="SN-A-C Orange, post: 20959871, member: 49737"]Drop the floor? Really?[/QUOTE]

I know there is enough room to do it on the floor. It would complicate some of the other activities held in the arena, but that doesn't mean they couldn't make it work. The only thing I am not sure about is whether it would mess up the sightlines in the upper deck. I think it is steep enough to maintain them, but not positive.

Looking back on this team's performance, I wonder where this team is (especially emerging players like BHH and Aidoo) if Nkamhoua doesn't suffer a season ending injury? Maybe Barnes would have kept tinkering the lineup and it would have played out the same, but that injury truly forced his hand. Unintended addition by subtraction?

Luckily our freshman bigs (and everyone else) have risen to the challenge. We're probably one of the few top 12-15 teams that still play more than 8-9 players a game. We can roll out a lot of different looks based on the matchup, and stay fresh enough to keep up the defensive intensity. GBO!

Not to knock a great win, but we almost blew it there at the end. Auburn purposely didn't guard Chandler on a throw-in and then promptly fouled him, and he missed two FT's. All of a sudden, it's a 3-pt game. It almost cost us.

Then wasn’t it a 5 point game after KC’s floater dropped through the net?

the Ref's were not good today. That foul on Fulky where he is standing in place with the ball and the Auburn guy knocks him down and they call it on Fulky was really bad. Even the announcer was like "How did they just call that on Fulkerson?"
That one is mind boggling. The call would've been an illegal screen, as on a dribble hand off you still have to be completely set. Except Fulky never passed the ball, nor was he really moving. The guy just ran straight into Fulky and it was a foul on us. That guy also fouled Santi on the play, and got away with that as well. Then they go and hit a 3 on the next play. Probably a 5 point swing.

That doesn't even mention the one where Santi got laid out under the basket. The announcers said it was a good play, but were completely wrong. Cardwell did not go straight up, he is clearly jumping forward into Santi, while also having his arms out in front of them as well. Totally missed call. Again leads to a fast break and I believe another layup. So another 4 point swing.

Bull, Show me any two calls blown as bad as the missed call early in the game when they grabbed BHH (I THINK IT WAS) around the neck and the charging call on Fulky right before the half. These are world class bad calls. Not to mention just seconds before the Fulky call when Kessler took out Santi on a drive and got the no call. I have kept my DVR version of the game, so give me some clock times and calls to go examine that rival these calls. I did not like the way the game was officiated in general, too much contact on both ends, but the bad calls that are supposed to even out simply did not.

what’s going to end Auburn’s season will be one of their guards shooting them out of the game. You’ve got a teammate that can get off a shot at will yet they take a 3 5’ behind the line or force some low percentage shot in traffic. Smith is maybe the smoothest scorer i recall since David Robinson was in the NCAA tourney.
Did you miss the Durant and Carmelo college experience? They are the best scorers in the NCAA in the last 22 yrs imho. Add Jabari Smith to those two now. Wow he hit some tough shots!

Get out of here with this crap most objective fans will call that bad officiating. The first half was poorly called…it effected our offense. Second half called correctly thus why we won
I didn’t say anything about it not being bad officiating. There will be games when you have stretches that allow overly physical play and sometimes it's an entire game. It's been going on for about 40 years now. Sorry you missed it. Of course it's bad officiating but it's a fact of the game and you have to have guards that can handle it.

Not disagreeing with you. I think the call on Fulky got switched to Vescovi. It looked like he may have pushed off.

How do you switch a player possession charging call to a guy without the ball? Could not even remotely been called an illegal screen.

I may be wrong, I thought they changed the call to Vescovi for pushing the guy into Fulky. The announcers barely mentioned it. Half the time the announcers are too busy talking about nothing to keep the viewers informed.

I appreciate a game where the zebras let the guys play physical. I remember thinking during the game how much better the game was as a result. I’d take a much more physical game with some calls that are passed over versus one where the refs destroy the flow and momentum with their whistles.

That’s great if they were calling it fair in the first half which they were not thankfully an act of god got to them and started calling it fair in the second half

1. Hey Auburn, Hey Bruce, GFY!!!! What a game, felt a bit like that was a tennesse vs. the refs and vs. the opponent type of game for awhile, we definitely weren’t getting the benefit of the whistle in the fist half and even early in the 2nd half it wasn’t good…our guys did not quit, they locked in and found a way to win this game, it feels damn good.

2. We weren’t great offensively, definitely could’ve been much better…too many turnovers, didn’t shoot all that well, but we crashed the boards to give ourselves 2nd chance points, we kept possessions alive and our effort was so good. I would’ve liked to see us less hesitant to let it fly from 3 when the looks were there and not try to back down Kessler, but hard to argue.

3. Defensively though, my freaking goodness, that 2nd half was borderline orgasmic (outside the final 2 minutes). The first half wasn’t bad, but the 2nd half we absolutely locked up and said you gotta score points with someone beside Smith. Now granted for Smith he still got his, something like 18/30 2nd half points, but that’s how you have to defend Auburn…that dude is gonna get his shot any time that he wants, we disrupted his flow enough and made him work enough and that was enough. Simply put, can their guards beat ours and the answer was no.

4. Sure I’m an advocate for Barnes, I love what he’s done here, but I don’t think I’ve ever singled him out postgame…how about a tip of the cap? Auburn has our number? The man wears his team out in January? He’s coasting to retirement? His teams never peak at the right time? This team is unequivocally playing its best ball of the year this past month, they are moving up metrics and seed lists and they’re doing so while navigating a season ending injury to a starter and incorporating freshman who one hasn’t played much and the other has hardly played at all…that final season of Grant & Admiral is tough to beat, but this one may be right up there, so much for retirement Rick.

5. Brandon Huntley-Hatfield…he got exposed some tonight sure, but without him we quite possibly lose, helluva an effort young man. His ORB were huge, he also had some possessions where he gave Jabari hell, and that is not something I expected at all leading up to this game. Yes Jabari got him some, but the point/fact is it wasn’t every time, and BHH made him work, the potential is there and we are starting to see is at just the right time.

6. Ok big picture, ooooh I’m giddy….we sit at 21-7(12-4), we said going into this final stretch 2-1 would be a solid finish, and it would be, but now you’ve changed the outlook and momentum a bit. Zero questions asked you should beat Georgia, which sets up a monumental game against Arkansas here in Knoxville…with what has gone on around us it’s very much possible Tennessee is getting talked about as a 2 seed, at worst a 3 seed, win against Georgia and that’s hold serve….which again leads into Saturday’s game against Arkansas. We locked down a double bye with todays win, so realistically outside of losing to Georgia (please god no), it’s hard to see us as worse than a 4 seed, but a 2/3 sounds so much better ;)

GBO!!!

Good write up. It was great to see us win while not playing great on offense. BHH and JJJ gave Smith hell on the defensive end. He got his points but had to work really hard to get them and it took the rest of Auburn's team out of their rhythm. Spot on about how impressive BHH's defense was against Smith. He had no back down at all. I was surprised to see him get so many minutes and thought we would see Aidoo more but BHH earned those minutes.

People were complaining 2-3 weeks ago about BHH getting a few minutes a game and not doing much....well tonight was an example of why you give a talented kid minutes and don't trim the rotation down too early. You never know when things are going to click and you want to keep a young players confidence level up. If BHH can keep this up then we have a 4 man big rotation of Uros, Fulk, BHH and Aidoo with JJJ playing the 4 in small ball.

Kessler did not particularly impress me. He seemed a little slow and not very creative on offense. We took it to him a few times on offense and finished over or around him. Impressive, gutsy showing from a Vols team who looked like they knew they were the better team.
