BTO’s Florida Postgame Report

Beet, do you think the decision to decrease Gainey’s minutes is a result of his FG % or more based on what the staff thinks the other guys bring to the table? He’s shooting at a very low clip right now but that’s somewhat to be expected from a volume shooter on the perimeter.

In years past, we struggled on offense at times because we kept making the extra pass and nobody had the killer instinct we needed down the stretch. Dalton has solved that for this team, but personally I enjoyed seeing Gainey putting up shots earlier in the season. It was a nice departure from prior seasons when we would waste possessions by passing the ball around.
I definitely think it’s linked to his slump, hard to think otherwise…but I think it’s also Dillione & Estrella healthy and showing well in practice garnering some minutes, I would say a combo of those things. They’re your 8-10 imo and will continue to be pushed in practice and rewarded in games with playing time if they’ve practiced well.

5. Holding serve at home is going to be a huge aspect of how this regular season goes overall, as we’ve seen through 2 weeks of conference play around the country no win on the road is to be taken for granted. We talked before the start of SEC play how 7-2 would be a good start for the first 9 games, the Vols sit at 3-1 with 5 remaining, Bama/SC/LSU at home and Vandy/UK on the road finish out the first half of the state. Bama at home this Saturday is probably the 2nd toughest game of those remaining and so for that reason it’s a big one, if you can get a win then getting to that 7-2 mark set as a goal becomes much more attainable. Also worth mentioning that there’s a good chance we will be fighting with Alabama for seeding in both SECT & NCAAT, so having a head to head win against them would be nice to have as a feather in the cap.

GBO!!!

I agree about the Bama game. I think we will look back at this game as a turning point, one way or another. Winning at UK is a bonus, but winning Saturday is vital.

How about Mashack's defense against a much taller post!
Mashack is a great defensive player and he never shies away from a challenge. Size is not an issue for him when he is defending someone. Do I correctly remember him being reported as saying that he wanted the assignment of guarding Zach Edey before the Purdue game?

1. Great all around showing, Florida isn’t a bad team by any stretch, probably a fringe NCAAT team and you absolutely owned them for the majority of 40 minutes, very impressive stuff. Would’ve been easy with the early start time to not come out ready to play but kudos to the players, they were ready, and shout out to the fans who made the visit to TBA…there was a lot more folks there than I expected there to be and they were into the game, great atmosphere considering the conditions.

2. Dalton Knecht continues his charge towards SEC POY along with consideration for All-American honors and putting himself into national player of the year conversations at this time. He is really playing at an elite offensive level right now and he’s picked his defense up to his credit to the point that Barnes feels ok playing him 35+ minutes. His teammates around him are doing a better and better job of looking for him and “learning” to play alongside him and it’s showing. He may never have as efficient of a 35+ point performance as last night, but having that offensive weapon on your roster can be a difference maker come March, and that’s not something we’ve had on the wing in a very long time.

3. In conference play Jonas Aidoo is currently averaging: 27mpg 15.5ppg 10rpg 2bpg 56%FG 73%FT…you will not find many P5 big men with those numbers, you have to look at the nations best like Zach Edey, Ryan Kalkbrenner, PJ Hall, Daron Holmet, Armando Bacot etc to find big men with similar numbers. Now obviously with that said I narrowed it down to conference play for Aidoo, but I’m just highlighting his strong recent play for us and how well he’s playing, if he can keep it up he will/should continue to gain more recognition both on a SEC level and national level. The other thing is he’s taking 12 shots a game, he’s giving us an inside presence which is something we’ve really lacked at times, and is benefiting us as a team from an offensive standpoint.

4. Jordan Gainey has played season low minutes now in 3 straight games, it would appear that the staff is starting to look at some other options. We saw Dillione get in first off the bench last night and we saw Estrella get some run as well, those look like the 2 candidates so pickup some of those minutes and Barnes hoping 1 of them steps forward. Your starting 5 plus Mashack and Awaka off the bench is a solid 7 and trusted by the staff, but you’re an injury away (even minor) from needing something from someone else, it will be worth watching how Gainey stays locked in and then how Dilione and Estrella continue to perform if/when given the opportunities.

Appreciate write up. Being the body language doctor for a second. Even with JJJ and Vescovi not playing great this was one of the best I've seen their body language at the same time. Both genuinely seemed happy for Knecht and worked to get him the ball on offense and excited when he scored.

Season is long and improving vibes helps a lot down the line building towards a really successful season.

We should lower our expectations for DK. He was feeling it, or got the look in his eye, whatever you want to call it. That does not happen all the time.
If I am AL or KY, .... the game plan is going to be guard DK like a glove and make someone else beat me.
The other guys are going to get there chances.
Tennessee constantly targeted Aidoo in the first 12 minutes.
The offense continues to evolve! They ran DK off screens (a la Vescovi last season) to get him open and give him looks.
The team KNEW DK was feeling it and they kept giving him the ball ... exactly what smart teams are supposed to do!
I disagree with the assessment that SV is lost offensively. He is a veteran who wants to win and does not have to score points to feel good about himself. He got the ball to others in spots they could score and he ended up on the pointy end of the referees finger too many times.
JJJ is a veteran that does what the team needs him to do whatever that is.
JJJ looks to me that he has taken on a little bit of an enforcer role on the team. Thus the hard fouls. [I hope he is using his 'good' hand ... :^) ] This coming from someone whose acquired nickname on the court was 'the punisher.'

2nd best showing of the year as a team. With more room to grow! kenpom has us at 20 (offensively) and 2 (defensively).
According to kenpom Florida is the 6th best team in the SEC. Really good win and as BTO said, 'Florida is a bubble team right now.' Top 40-50 team.

We pretty much had control the entire game. The outcome was never in question. Damn good win, easily covering the spread

Thats 3/4 of it and certainly good enough but he does not use it often enough. Most of the time he tries to get closer to the basket and loses the handle, for a variety of reasons, and does not utilize his reach advantage. I wish he would accept where ever he receives the entry pass is where he needs to shoot from, that little hook or a even a jump shot, and stop driving. His field goal percentage would go way up. He is much improved over last season in any case, showing some agressivness lately.
I agree he's been scoring more steadily in the games where he's used it.

As for when he doesn't... two guesses: the scouting reports on each defender may determine whether he hooks or crashes the hoop, or it could be that when we are running our small lineup around him, that they want him shooting so that he's in position for the possible rebound rather than falling away.

Armchair coach talking here.

I think we fans underrate the importance to the offense of having ZZ able to penetrate from the point--but also Santi penetrating from the wing.

It appears to me that Vescovi's drives from the wing often necessitate a different series of responses from defenses, and yield some unique passing lanes. Plus, based on last year's performances, opponents know they can't let him get to the basket or to the foul line.

I wonder how his assists this season compare to previous seasons?

Well, it's not like this was his first big game.

Having said that, I hope it does open up a lot of opportunities for other players on the team. I think we DO have other players who can win games for us.

GBO!!!

If James and Vescovi can become consistent 9 to 10 point per game scorers, this offense will be ELITE.

He was killing it with the 10-15 foot jumpers. When those are falling, we are impossible to stop on offense
Yes. It's a beautiful thing to see all our weapons put to a defense. I think it was Ole Miss' coach talking about how impossible it is to defend this team because of the multiple options. No way to double up or shade to any one player, or the other 4 options will burn you.

I love seeing our "4 guys shuffle around the arc for 20-25 seconds until we get a clean look from 3 and still clank it off the rim leading to a 5-7 minute scoring drought somewhere in the game" offense dissolve into serious scoring efficiency.

If we can develop more of these, then I think we can make a FF this year ...
#1 Josiah keep attacking the rim like we've hoped for 5 years now.
#2 Santiago getting to that 10-17' pull-up area and getting 4-6 points per game there.
#3 DK continuing to solidify his D leaving no soft spot.
#4 Aidoo to keep turning up the "Yes I Can" mentality on O & D. He was elite in the 4th Q va UGA on defense.
#5 Justin Gainey's confidence to return starting this weekend until the NCAAT. He can stretch defenses and give some relief minutes that we could use.
#6 Aidoo and Awaka learn to add taking the charge to their defensive repertoire. I don't think either has taken a charge from a big all season. Had both used that tool vs Bacot or MSUs big, we probably win both games.

... what I love about this team is it's potential to improve on their already ample ability!

Agree. I thought that him and Josiah both played really well yesterday other than scoring, and they didn’t force the issue by jacking up a ton of shots like especially Josiah is sometimes prone to do. I don’t think we expected it to go this way but maybe their roles just aren’t as big time scorers for us this year but as complimentary scorers to Knecht, Aidoo, and Z.

I will say, JJJ is getting in the habit of fouling really aggressively. He’s already gotten one flagrant for it and if he doesn’t dial it back it won’t be the last
He didn't deserve the F1 he got the other day. He swatted at the ball, not the other guy's head.

It couldn't have been any more of a textbook definition of an F1. He made substantial contact to the head while making a play on the ball. That's why it wasn't an F2.
Weren’t you originally suggesting against Oats being T’d up? By the textbook definition him getting physical with an opposing player was a T…

No, I clearly stated that I'd have no problem with something being called on Oats, but I like the no-call better. Linking that scenario to this James scenario is a big stretch...

Right. An F1 doesn't legislate intent. It defines contact as excessive, intentional or not. As you said, if had been determined to be intentional attempt to cause harm, it could have been an F2 and an ejection. Obviously there was no intent to injure by JJJ, but his play was excessive contact to the head/neck. He didn't mean for it to be. He was simply trying to block the shot, which he did, and his follow-thru caught the guy in the head.

I’m not talking about the fouls themselves, I just find it interesting that in 1 case you’re saying it’s the clear correct call because that’s the definition, where as in another instance you’re good with no call even though that’s against the definition.

As others^ said, didn’t need to be intentional, just excessive, and it was. I didn’t mean to imply Josiah was trying to hurt anybody

I didn't see it as excessive or unnecessary. Contact was incidental from the follow through to the of the basketball play of swatting at the ball.

Don't be dense. The only reason I commented on either scenario is because other posters' takes were on the extreme sides of the scopes, as is par for the course in this forum. I already said I wouldn't have had any problems with Oats getting a tech, and I certainly would have been fine if they didn't escalate James's foul to an F1.

You're right, it was purely incidental, which is why it wasn't escalated to an F2. James could have fouled the player a million ways without contacting the head, but he didn't. This is pretty standard enforcement over the last few seasons.

IIRC, Estrella got kicked in the head in a game earlier this season, and that should have been an F1 at least for the reasons discussed.
