BTO’s Georgia Postgame Report

That’s what I want to see more of. Start the offense inside and kick out if needed, but we have guys who can score in the post, or even midrange.

When Uros came in during the first half it felt to me like he sparked our offense with the kick out from the post for the three. Obviously, we would have won handily because UGA was just out manned.

Right. But I think Uros’ offensive ability is underrated/underutilized. He’s not Shaq. But he can score when he gets it down low. Awaka is known as a rebounder, but he finishes well in the paint too. ON has a nice soft touch and a lot of bounce. Aidoo can score in the low post. They all bring different styles, but all can be effective. I feel like we abandon the post on offense far too often instead of being persistent. Getting those guys, Phillips, and JJJ involved in the post and midrange will open up the outside and that’s when the offense clicks.

If we will take that approach consistently down the stretch…as opposed to the tendency to just come down the floor and Jack up 3s without going to the post, as we did to start the Georgia game…then I’ll feel much better about making a deep NCAAT run.

In Texas and Alabama, we’ll see two very athletic long teams with strong scorers at multiple positions. We’ll start to know who we are and what we can do after those games. Seeing us fold against KY feels like an anomaly to me. We had a truly off night. Hopefully we can handle screens and switches without getting called for imaginary fouls. We’ll need to play aggressively to beat Texas and Bama. If there is one thing I like, it’s the cockiness of Bama’s two star freshman. They haven’t been punched in the mouth yet by good team defense. If we can make them uncomfortable in front of a home crowd, I like our odds.

Anyone who questions Santi on defense on here man this dude is fearless. When he gets switched to bigger players he gets in there and battles. He runs his tail off chasing guys trying to beat them to their spot. He seems to always know where they are going. He moves his feet really well. He is deceptively quick. Man i wish he was coming back next season. I love watching him and ZZ in the backcourt at the same time.

He had 5 steals and didn’t really gamble on any of them. He just gets great position.

We are going to see how good this team is over the next 8 game stretch. Will be against teams who statically are much better offensively. Are we good enough to be a 1 seed? Time will tell. One positive about tonight’s game and something Barnes has been harping on recently is defending without fouling. We need to keep that up against Texas as their guards will challenge us.

We don’t give away freebies at the line, keep our turnovers low and just take good shots and we should be fine and competitive against anyone. Just hope that our half court offense can increasingly become more efficient. Still think Phillips and Key are critical on offensive end for us to make a deep run. I don’t see how we keep Awaka off the floor.

I think fans believe we need one dominant player to take over—one guy they can put all their hope in for March. They don’t know how to follow a basketball ‘team’. Our strength is in our ability to spread the ball and involve the entire offense. It’s not sexy by our fan’s standards though. We don’t have that guy who consistently embarrasses his defender on the way into the lane, or the guy who drills 7 contested threes in a row (Vescovi?).

But I think the confidence of every player on this team is building with every game and I love watching them methodically dismantle these other teams.
I think fans realize that there will be a game (and it could be our last game) that we need a bucket to win the game and we don't have that 1 guy that we confidently know can get that bucket like a Chandler. We have seen several times in JJJ career where he wasn't that guy. Santi probably can't get the space he needs with the ball in his hand to hit that game winning 3. I don't have confidence in ZZ getting that last second drive for a game winning bucket. Maybe a drive and dish to an open guy would be the best opportunity, but not sure him by himself. Aidoo and Uros fighting a double down low for a game winning bucket.....doubtful, good chance neither of them would be in the game. Olivier...lol...no. Key....maybe he can be the guy. Phillips....maybe next year.

So, yes as good as this team plays as a team, we have not needed that 1 guy, But IMO we will need that 1 guy in March at some point.

Can he come back if he wanted? I have no idea anymore with covid years.

Anyone who claims to believe Santi isn't a really high level defender doesn't really know much about the game of basketball. And his improvement in that area across 3 years is remarkable, because he wasn't a great defender when he got here.

Aidoo has to stop with the 15 footers, it’s a low percentage shot and even worse considering there’s likely nobody to rebound the miss. Awaka, Plav & Nkamhoua are all over 60% from 2 which is what you want, Aidoo is down around 50% which isn’t good.

I get that, but this team offers options. That’s the point.

We’ve had “that guy” in the past and it hasn’t worked out. I’m not directing this at you, but I think a lot of our fans are forgetting this is still a team game.

But the more frustrating part is our fans think the only thing that matters is March and are missing out on a hell of a ride. At times our team plays some beautifully efficient basketball. Watch them make just the right pass at just the right moment, or make the perfect move without the ball to get open. The subsequent basket may appear boring, but the setup is the ride.

People may not like the comparison considering the history, but this team reminds me of a more talented version of the Loyola Chicago team that made the final 4. Didn’t really have a go to guy, but played really good team basketball and had different guys step up game to game.

Idk if we need a go to guy down the stretch if we keep running the offense and players have the confidence to step up.

Watching the highlights this morning, the one thing I noticed was that late in the game, it seemed like the guys shooting free throws were not as focused on their form as they need to be. Can't lose focus on form just because they have a big lead.

That’s funny you say that. I was at the game last night, and when Uros air mailed his first FT attempt late, then hit the front rim on the 2nd toss, a guy sitting next to me said: “I’m embarrassed. I’m a 6’6” former player and his technique was awful. Bend those knees.”

You guys that continue to call out the refs.

It was definitely called to our advantage last night. I saw several of our steals that could have been called against us.

We absolutely got the home court calling last night, hope to get it again Saturday because UT is a very physical team.
