1. Ultimately it doesn’t matter the fashion, a win is a win and a loss is a loss, good teams find a way to win even when things aren’t going your way and on the road in conference play that is an even tougher task as Tennessee found out earlier this week, however to their credit they got the job done this time.

2. We’ll start with the positive, Dalton Knecht was an absolute dude for the 2nd straight conference game and appears to have figured some things out which is obviously a great sign. Having a guy you can go to when you need a bucket, or late in the game when you’re trying to close it out is a great luxury. Zeigler offensively looked good again, he’s really hitting that floater now which is an added piece to his game and very effective…he had way too many first half turnovers but he was much better the second half and he’s been great in that area so I can look past that this time. Both dudes have started out conference play strong and are obviously huge parts to our seasons success.

3. Now the negative…that’s one of the worst games I’ve seen JJJ play, and that’s adding to a really bad current stretch of games. I noticed the wrap on his right hand and not sure what he’s got going on, maybe that’s something to attribute it to, but man, he was really bad on both ends. Even when he’s been bad offensively in the past you could count on his defense, he was getting blown by today and became unplayable for Barnes in that 2nd half, who went with Mashack for much of that comeback.

4. We looked great against Ole Miss and I said at the time it was our best, most complete game, we followed it up with 2 not so complete performances to put it nicely. I say that to say, I think this team is still a ways away from their best basketball, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Now you don’t wanna take a bunch of L’s and hurt your NCAAT seeding, but some struggle wins like today, and a “good” loss here and there isn’t the worst if it causes lessons to be learned, guys to find their roles and the team improve as a whole. Vescovi is still not playing like anyone expected, JJJ has regressed to not great form, as quick as it appeared Mashack was taking a step forward he seems to have taken a step back. Lots of room for individual improvement and team improvement, but taking lessons while getting wins isn’t a bad thing.

5. I don’t want to make a definitive statement and say it is what it is, but I’m pretty close…Jonas Aidoo was really good today after being terrible last game, but Georgia didn’t have a competent post to put against him either. It feels like Aidoo is a solid option, but against the games best posts he’s going to struggle and we as a team will struggle as well to defend it, it will continue all season to be something to watch with each opponent we face, what do they have in the post and how will Aidoo match up. Today he was really good, 10pts 15rbd 5blk, that’s the potential, unfortunately against the games best the stat line hasn’t looked like that.

6. If I had told you a week ago Tennessee would average 81ppg this week you almost certainly would’ve taken it and been pretty confident we would’ve gone 2-0. Our defense was not very good this week and if we weren’t Tennessee and had Barnes as coach I’d be a bit worried for sure, but because of that reason I think you aren’t as worried. But I say that to point out that even though or offense is streaky or can go cold they are still putting up points, and now are up to a season high #20 offensive rating on KenPom, that is really good and what everyone was hoping for. The defense being what needs “work” is something I much rather see and have to deal with, especially considering we have guys like Vescovi, JJJ and Gainey who all are capable of shooting MUCH better than they currently are.

7. Big picture Tennessee went 1-1 this week which was what they needed to do, 2-0 would have been great and likely have Tennessee up to #2 or #3 in the new poll, but as we’ve learned winning on the road in conference is TOUGH. Tennessee now goes back home for 3 of their next 4 with the 1 road game being Vanderbilt, definitely some potential to rattle off a few wins. Florida is a solid team with a pretty good big man in Tyrese Samuel, should be a solid matchup. We said 7-2 or better was the goal in the first 9, they’re 2-1, so 5-1 over the next 6 is the goal now, obviously with each win you have more wiggle room, but winning these next 4 would really get things looking up again.

Gotta like that after giving up a double digit lead all the way to trailing double digits that we kept our composure and kept believing. The attitudes are good and exactly what’s needed to improve. We can be so much better if we can gel with everyone playing close to their capabilities.

Great write-up as always. I’ll admit the pretty putrid middle 20-minutes shook my faith today and I didn’t think there was a snowball’s chance in hell we’d win that game, but we did. That’s a great, great win.

I don’t think I would have ever believed we would win a game where the opposing team shot basically 50% from 3. Until the final minute where Georgia had to throw up a couple of prayers, they were a sizzling 48-50% the entire second half and made 14 from the perimeter. Insane.

It’s also a great sign that we have seen this team erase 2nd half deficits of 15 and 12. Obviously, we have to stop getting in such huge holes, but last year’s team would never have had the offense to climb back in it.

It’s also really nice to see us finish strong in a close game on the road. I remember last year basically any game that was close at the under 4 timeout, we would urinate down our own leg and lose. We got to the under 4 timeout tied on Wednesday, and lost. It was really encouraging to see this team clamp down on defense and finally finish strong.

It was no coincidence that the moment JJJ left the court in the 2nd half at the U8 timeout we went on our huge run. Mashack was a menace on defense and the entire team played so much better with JJJ on the bench. Easily the worst game he has played as a Vol. It boggles the mind.

There really isn’t anything else to add about Dalton Knecht other than HE IS HIM. That is why I think this team, no matter if we win the regular season title or not, can go far in the big dance. We haven’t had “that dude” to do something like that in years.

I’ll just close by saying I thought depth was going to be one of our strengths this year, and I banged that drum all through the non-conference, but right now depth certainly looks a bit concerning. Gainey has vanished. JJJ has hit a wall. Mashack isn’t a reliable scoring threat although the offense has improved, and we’re getting nothing from our freshmen (as expected). We can’t expect Dalton to average 25+ ppg in SEC play. We have to get him some help. I have confidence someone else will pick up the slack outside of ZZ, but if we don’t get more from JJJ and Santi on offense it’s going to be hard to achieve our goals.

^^^I admit I almost did a point about depth, or lack-thereof…right now you feel good about play ZZ Santi, & Knecht, that’s really it. Aidoo if the opposing big isn’t a heavy with moves, JJJ if he’s engaged, and Mashack if he’s playing within himself and the others are scoring around him, and Awaka if he can stay out of foul trouble. There was talk among many folks about how we’d play 10 and, and how deep we were, we are struggling to get past 7 at this point on most nights. Barnes has given Dilione some minutes the last 2 games seemingly in an attempt to see if he deserves more, maybe over Gainey.

How is Gainey getting more minutes than Awaka?
Awaka is a tweener. He isn’t tall enough to be a center but plays like a center. I like him a lot but he would foul out in 20 min. JJJ can drive you crazy but he can play from line to line, so he has to be in there and you need Aidoo for his height. That leaves Awaka coming off the bench.

UT may not be consistent enough to win a league title but the goal is to grind this season out, obtain a good seed and do some damage come tournament time. The SEC is a better league than I thought and expect we are going to be in many battles this year especially on the road. Hopefully the come from behind win gives this teams some confidence when adversity hits us again. Much like others have said in this thread, our depth was supposed to be a strength but recently has been a detriment. May be the biggest concern I have. The competition should help us refine roles, but time will tell.

Knecht - this game is an example why we got him. He can steal a game for you and any opponent is going to have to account for him which "should" open up the floor for everyone else. Hopefully he can do the same when March/April comes. He may be the most skilled offensive UT player I've seen since Allan Houston. He honestly should have had 42 tonight. Had 2 layups go in/out and missed 2 at the FT line. Despite that 36 pts out of 20 shots is ridiculously efficient.
Zeigler - I think the 6 TO's were a fluke and doubt we see it again. Guy remains the "heart and soul" of the team and is playing outstanding. 20 pts & 7 assists currently in 3 SEC games and his defense is elite.
Aidoo - admittedly I can be hard on him but 15 boards and 5 blocks, with a complementary 10 pts is rock solid. Needs to be stronger with ball in his hands. It seems obvious Barnes wants to instill him more on the offensive end, but he has limited post moves. I do like them using him in pick and roll with Knecht.
Vescovi - he HAS to stop getting into foul trouble early in the 1st half (primarily because his backup Gainey is not performing), his role is emerging and he provides stability for us but has to play like a 5th year senior. If he can give us 10 pts per game and hit a higher % his open shots when available that will do.
James - I'm pretty forgiving for his offense because it is expected, but it seems his poor offensive outing today effected the rest of his overall game. Not typical. JJJ is currently shooting 26% from field and is 0 out of 9 from three-point line in SEC play. That will improve because it really can't get any worse.
Mashack - more than anyone else he knows his role on this team. But of late and over the past 5 games he has not shot a single FTA. I know he is shooting the open 3 well this year, but he is athletic enough to get into the paint and force the issue. UT often falls in love with perimeter shot, Mashack can help us more on offensive end if he stays aggressive.
Awaka - I think he needs more minutes because his energy is contagious and he is still our best back to the basket post player, but how do you give him more minutes when Aidoo commands and deserves his 28 minutes per game? When Aidoo/Awaka were on the floor together today, it didn't out well.
Gainey - kinda feel a bit sorry for the guy but he is creating a problem for Barnes, which if it continues for too much longer, a coaching decision needs to be made. 3 SEC games, he is shooting 11% from FG and 14% from 3 pt line. He was much better earlier in year when willing to attack the goal...but that has disappeared. Hopefully some home games will wake him up. If not, he has to sit because he is hurting the team when he is on the floor.
Dilione - we rely so much on Zeigler to the tune of 37-38 minutes per game in SEC play. We are going to wear the guy out. I think Dilione needs more run and let him make some mistakes if even for only 7-8 minutes per game and/or give him more of Gainey's minutes.
Everyone else - doubt we see anyone else the rest of the year unless it is a blowout or our bigs get into foul trouble. Barnes doesn't trust them on the court.

Thumb issue?

I thought Santi played well, he hit 40% and all from deep. I’d like to see him take 8-10 shots, but if he doesn’t stop getting in early foul trouble that’s a hard thing to do. He only played 24 mpg in these 2 road games, needed that to be 30-32
Didn’t see that. Why can’t this dude stay healthy?

Yeah, it’s been a struggle. I don’t want to make any declarative statements yet just 3 games into conference play, but the question of depth is not one I thought I would have this year. It’s concerning.

I think the hope is this team is still gelling, but at times that feels like a cop out because we returned a lot of minutes from last year’s roster. I think Barnes is hoping JJJ and Santi will figure things out on offense, he said as much in his post-game presser, but Dillione needs to be getting more minutes to get him ready. We might need him in March.

Gainey….he is quite frankly a black hole right now. Average on defense and non-existent on offense.

MASHACK OVER JAMES....... Please!!!
We need James to play alot because more often than not, his overall play helps us win. Up until these last couple of games he has been playing the best ball of his career. He is in a mini-slump. Barnes did the right thing today and sat him but he will work himself out of it. Over his entire career he has received criticism because he lacked any desire to go to the rim, but this year he is attacking more often. We need more of that, let him rebound, defend, etc......he will be fine.

I think depth will be fine. The fact that there's a 1st all SEC player in vescovi who has has not hit his peak is huge for ceiling of this team.

I think difference right now is Vescovi is still playing hard, hustling, and not letting his poor offense affect his play. JJJ is stinking on offense but also acting crazy on defense which is tough. Barnes is ever so slowly letting Freddie get out there. Hopefully keeps happening over Gainey.

I think Santi is the key player on whether this team wins the SEC or not. If he returns to any of his all-SEC forms, this team has their 3rd threat on offense. Which opens up the pick and roll with Aidoo and ZZZ, Knecht and Santi. Then JJJ can be the glue guy and Mashack can be the defensive stopper. Awaka can do his thing. Everything Gainey and Dilione brings is gravy. I wanna see a little Estrella and Phillips, but that's probably wishful thinking. While I'm wishing, some Carr minutes, too. But, Santi has to return to the all-SEC player he was the last 2 years or we won't accomplish what I think we can. Ha-ha, like I know anything. Jmo

Because they do not play the same position so one's play time has nothing to do with the others.

I didn’t mean it to come off as it did - that Gainey was taking Awaka’s playing time. What I mean is Barnes is giving limited bench minutes. I’d be using more of those on someone who can get us points in the paint than what Gainey has been bringing.

100%% cosign..but santi and JJJ are off right now...thats the downside. The upside is we have 5-6 guys that any given game can go off on you. When have we had that? DK can lose his mind. Santi ZZ and JJJ, stop it any of them can go off any given night. The issue becomes Gainey...and to a lesser extent the combination of Awaka and Gainey. If gainey is your third guy... you got issues. As the backup 4th guy.. yup. DK ZZ and Doo played nice ball. JJJ and santi and Gainey were off.. mashack awaka got limited (awaka by minutes, wasn't needed). If thats our stello we ae good.. because Santi can go off at any given moment and JJJ will always affect the game even when its not in boxscore. If it goes on like this.. Awaka.. hell. bro getting rested. He got energy for days. There will only ever be one Charles Barkley till there is another. Awaka has a roster spot in the NBA or college buts its not as a starter. He is a glue guy. His size causes problems good and bad. barkley (lite) is a bad comparison, he is more impactful like a dennis rodman (lite) without the drama?

There is something wrong with James, have no idea what it is but he is not himself. Maybe a virus or something.

Road wins are road wins, every one is huge.

Santi had a terrible game defensively, at least for the first 30 minutes of this game. He got it sorted after that. I would like to see him attack the basket more often as he can finish inside a little bit, but can also create for others. He just seems to be not involved at all in the offense for the most part.

ZZ had way to many turnovers, but he really has been scoring the ball really well the last couple of weeks. We certainly need it. Jo needs to figure it out, because he can't keep playing this poorly, as he's really our only option at the 4. DK is fantastic, which hopefully bodes well in the tournament, but we need the others to play well as well.

I thought the refs were just awful today. So inconsistent. They would call something on us, then Georgia would go down and do the exact same thing and not get whistled. The most egregious one was Deloach sprinting full speed into the back of Aidoo for an over the back the didn't call down the stretch. We were down 5, and then the get the rebound and hit a 3 to go up 8. Didn't matter obviously, but it was blatant. Georgia is not a good team, but the combo of refs and turnovers really made this one difficult. We have to take care of the ball.

Uh..........you're serious?

I don't really understand the need for everyone to pile on JJJ. He has had a cold streak the last two or three games, but that happens. Heck, three games ago Knecht was a nonfactor for a stretch and somewhat a liability on the court at times. It happens. JJJ is still shooting 35% from 3 on the season and is more efficient than he has ever been. And when he is able to hit some elbow jumpers it really helps spread out the defense. I'm sure its not too long until he'll average back up to his mean.
