BTO’s Georgia Postgame Report

^^^I admit I almost did a point about depth, or lack-thereof…right now you feel good about play ZZ Santi, & Knecht, that’s really it. Aidoo if the opposing big isn’t a heavy with moves, JJJ if he’s engaged, and Mashack if he’s playing within himself and the others are scoring around him, and Awaka if he can stay out of foul trouble. There was talk among many folks about how we’d play 10 and, and how deep we were, we are struggling to get past 7 at this point on most nights. Barnes has given Dilione some minutes the last 2 games seemingly in an attempt to see if he deserves more, maybe over Gainey.
Dillione needs more minutes.

Santi had a terrible game defensively, at least for the first 30 minutes of this game. He got it sorted after that. I would like to see him attack the basket more often as he can finish inside a little bit, but can also create for others. He just seems to be not involved at all in the offense for the most part.

ZZ had way to many turnovers, but he really has been scoring the ball really well the last couple of weeks. We certainly need it. Jo needs to figure it out, because he can't keep playing this poorly, as he's really our only option at the 4. DK is fantastic, which hopefully bodes well in the tournament, but we need the others to play well as well.

I thought the refs were just awful today. So inconsistent. They would call something on us, then Georgia would go down and do the exact same thing and not get whistled. The most egregious one was Deloach sprinting full speed into the back of Aidoo for an over the back the didn't call down the stretch. We were down 5, and then the get the rebound and hit a 3 to go up 8. Didn't matter obviously, but it was blatant. Georgia is not a good team, but the combo of refs and turnovers really made this one difficult. We have to take care of the ball.
You thought the refs were awful just today? The SEC refs are awful 24/7/365 - particularly for the visiting team. I’d love to see the breakdown of fouls for home vs visitors. Might need to take Vandy, Missouri, and Arkansas out of that since the refs also feast on weak teams.

Some observations from today's game ...

#1 Aidoo's black shoes were as hideous looking as JJJ {Important stuff first)
#2 Dillione probably needs Gaineys minutes now.
#3 I hope Gainey has not been Tyreked this year. We need his offense!
#4 Our offense has to change. We cannot win from the arc. Teams give that up and are sinking inside to stop penetration. They know we are gonna go flat for 7-9 minutes in each game. In the final few minutes Barnes turned that off and went KD man to make as the starting point of the offense and we got better.
#5 ZZ just repeatedly took the ball to the rack late and scored or was "fouled" (refs sucked on 2 of them, but consistently sucked both ways) every single time.
#6 I am shocked at how CRB did not take advantage of the Aidoo matchup in the post until the final 5.
#7 SV needs his offense to go INSIDE the arc. Misses way to many 3s wide open.
#8 UGA was 14 of 20 from 3 with @ 5 min left today. IDC who u play, your fortunate to win when they are hitting 70%! Looked like layups until the final chaos shots that dropped them to ONLY 50%😯
#9 Did I mention Aidoo's shoes?
JJJ and Aidoo look like they are wearing the black low-top Walmart specials my 70-year old neighbor wears when he mows the grass. Glad DK realized after one game how dumb they look.

Santi hustles! Love his defense. Been hard to watch James' effort these past few games. Maybe he's going through some personal stuff.

He's got the athleticism in spades, but he's a bit wild and out of control at times. Know we'll never do it, but I'd imagine we could be pretty fun to watch playing Nolan Richardson's 40 minutes of hell. Press and fast breaks. Kinda fun. Yeah, we are who we are and Barnes is very consistent and successful coach. No sense in messing with what's working so well. Still fun to dream a bit.

Freddie lacks the quickness or strength to guard quick guards at this level. Gainey is the better option- but struggling mightily offensively which in turn is affecting his decision making…

I saw gainey play at USCU a few times. His struggles are all mental. Kid can shoot, and I expect he’ll figure it out eventually.

I think expecting him to figure it out at some point is wishful thinking. He hasn’t done anything since the Wisconsin game two months ago.

It would be wise for Barnes to start preparing the freshmen a bit more.

He had 13 points on 3-8 from 3, 4 rebounds, 3 assists against Kansas. He’s capable of providing decent minutes. He’s just in a slump and not consistent right now. I don’t mind others getting minutes, but I don’t think we should give up on him. He’s shown athleticism as well.

Hopefully we’ll blow someone out and get some of the kids on the floor. Vandy, is that you?

I just don’t think he’s a lost cause yet. He was too good at upstate to be this bad here, even with the competition differences.

Agreed, plus he’s pretty good defensively and has been taking open looks within the offense lately. Only took 1 open 3 last game.

The alternative is Dillione who’s better offensively right now, but a bigger liability on defense. Makes it hard to play knecht and dillione together at the same time.

I agree. If he is that good of a shooter and there are no visible signs of injury, then I believe this is complete a mental thing. Personally, I believe he forces his shot too quickly once he gets on the floor, and if he misses, it immediately gets in his head and affects the rest of his game as well. I would like for him to make a couple trips up-down the floor and get into the 'flow' of the game before shooting. Don't concentrate so much on immediately shooting and then playing with an eye on the bench wondering when you will come out. Get a rebound, steal, assist, or anything to give confidence other than relying on shooting. If he is truly that good of a shooter, it will come but the mental aspect has to be fought first and what better way than to get involved in all the other aspects of the game. JMO

Go Vols!!

Yeah it’s like he’s playing scared but not afraid at all to shoot. Quite the paradox.

I’m hopeful for Dillione, but his offense is fairly nonexistent and his D has been severely lacking. Fortunately, I thought his D looked much better last outing and maybe his O will follow suit. It’s tough for a freshman to start the season with an injury.

I really think right now I would try to put him in at the regular rate but if he misses his first shot I would pull him quickly. I think it's in his head a bit and he needs the 1st one to go down for him to help this team as designed. This is on the cusp of changing IMO if the game slows down for Dillione and he starts to get comfortable and shine.
Mashack is the one who is taking minutes from both Gainey and vescovi. It’s hard to keep an elite athletic defender like mashack off the court, add to that he has improved offensively.
