BTO’s Missouri Postgame Report

DKnecht has been found lacking against a physical, double team.

In this situation on numerous occassions last night, he didn't handle the ball well and showed poor court vision to get out of the pressure.

DK had almost 30% of his turnovers for the entire season to date just last night.

Barnes will have to address this concern as other teams will see this weakness and attempt to exploit it.

5 TOs of 39 on the season isn’t 30%

He also had at least 2 TOs that were uncalled fouls. The best thing though was Barnes pulling JJJ and leaving in Awaka to match the physical play.

All road wins are great wins, especially this time of year. Style points don’t matter. Great teams know how to win ugly games. Very often we lose that exact type of game. This time we didn’t. We found a way. Right now, it’s late in the season. Winning is the only outcome that matters on the road.
Not all road wins are great wins. We could have won by 30 against this team and it wouldn't qualify. The word "great" is a little strong. Missouri was winless at home and had dropped their last two by 20 points plus. They lost to Vandy at home. That's all you need to know. There is never anything wrong with a road win. I will give you that.

I love Knecht but he has got to learn to give the ball up quickly when double teamed.

Thought Mizzou had a good D plan against him. As soon as he got the ball up high they immediately double teamed him and pushed back toward the half court line. Your right, he did not handle that well. Sure our next opponents will see that and he will see it again but also confident the staff will point this out to him and he will know what to do next time.

Yeah, to have any chance of staying in this game they needed to body up a Kneght and hope the physical play was allowed by the officials. Both of those things happened. In the past we thrived in these type officiated games but this year we tend to struggle.

Teams have double teamed DK off the high ball screen a lot this year. This wasn’t the first time. The entire team was lackadaisical with the ball last night, especially the first half. We will be fine.

Feel like mashack is in the dog house somehow. Physical game but he inky saw 11 minutes, majority in the first half. Think we’ll need him against A&M Saturday imo
Mashack is pretty much a black hole offensively. Provides no threat from range, rarely finishes at the rim, really is only useful for offensive rebounds and putbacks. To me it seems Barnes desperately wants 3 point threats on the wings but Gainey and JJJ just so rarely provide it

Mashack needs to be the guy inserted when JJJ, Vescovi, or Gainey are not getting it done. Pretty simple adjustment. He gives some spark that the above dudes don't when they are not on.
They have changed his role all season. He started out starting at pg and now he mostly plays as JJJ's backup at the 4. I would like to see him get more involved in the offense and get a couple of SV's and JG's minutes on the wing. Mashack last year showed he had a mid-range pull up and the turnaround shot. Further, Mashack has shown to rise to the occasion when his number is called, and the other two guards have struggled all season with consistency. Last night the team got a total of 6 points from JG and SV. It seems that there have been multiple games in which JG and SV have both struggled, but not many in which they have both played well.

Yep. I couldn’t watch, but it’s great to look at the box score and see this team fight through a stinker and win. Great teams know how to win when it’s not your night. And we did that. Which is all that matters.

Also I love seeing DK continue to stuff the stat sheet and become a well-rounded player. 10 rebounds last night was fantastic.
You’ll have to catch the highlights when you’re able. DK had the team’s best pass of the season in the middle of his scoring run. Just a rocket through Mizzou’s zone to Awaka.

His passing has greatly improved, feels like he’d be averaging 2 more assists per game if Santi was his normal self. DK is always finding him on the kick outs.

He did a highlight reel in 4 consecutive trips down the floor. Contested drive to the basket, long range 3. Then a midrange jump shot. Then finished off with that sick assist to Awaka who jammed it home. That was unreal!

I think he’d help a lot and needs more minutes against the more physical/better defending teams. At some point against those types of teams you need someone that can win off the dribble and get to the rim otherwise they just press up and play physical along the perimeter. Mashack is one of the few on the team that can get in the lane at will.

He’s also shot the ball well from deep this year.

On all the talk about paying Aidoo and Awaka together.

If anyone didn’t notice, towards the end of the game, Gates adjusted defensively to that lineup by not guarding Awaka at all on the perimeter and double teaming the ball instead.

If we go with that lineup again we have to be prepared for that.

Yeup, was surprised we kept running Awaka up top for the screen instead of aidoo. Seems aidoo is better on the pick and roll action whereas Awaka is better at carving out room down low.

I would like see more of the two together but agree with your point. It would have to be with a more defined plan on offense. Tobe roaming the 3pt line serves no real purpose other than PR w/ a dive to the rim. Jonas would have to lean into more perimeter based play and hope his shot is falling.

I know we mentioned Auburn in the regulars thread, but DK has to get better at handling the double before next Wednesday. Auburn sends it all night and will definitely be targeting him with how poorly he handled it against Mizzou. Should make for lots of open shots like UK got if he just gets stronger with the ball and more decisive when they send the double at half court.

Or if his teammates recognize the double team and present themselves to receive a pass?
