BTO’s Saint Joseph’s Postgame Report

Bailey is certainly showing his value, on both ends.
Offensively, this team seems to be finding itself. Joe’s strategy was apparently to pummel Fulk and Pons and they fouled out three guys doing it. It didn't seem to affect our ability to score one bit. This team is bank at the FT line.

The concern is that Joe exposed some things on our defense. Specifically, our over aggressiveness. Fulk was over pursuing beyond the 3 point line multiple times leaving the lane wide open. I’m surprised they didn’t get more out of it. I thought the defense was bad at times. I saw multiple examples where the team was out of position, and in recovery mode. Several uncontested drives to the basket. Bad spacing. The difference was that Joe missed so many threes, many of which weren’t that heavily contested. 20.7%. But, hey, it’s hard to get up for an inferior team and it’s just a few days until Christmas.

This game gives a pretty good picture of the type of teams they’ll struggle the most with.
We held Saint Joe’s to their worst offensive showing of the season, and yet we are picking apart our defense, I’ll take it.

1. We were favored by 22 and won by 36, we move to 5-0 and continue to take care of lesser opponents. Some may look at this and see on the surface 66 points by the opponent but I said pregame that they had a decent offense, add in that they push tempo a bit and that number isn’t a surprise at all.

2. For the first time this year an opponent went over 0.8ppp against us as SJU finished at 0.846ppp, that is still a very good defensive number and continues to look like the 2019 Texas Tech team defensively that played in the national championship. I am impressed at this defense, I knew they had the potential but to have the layoff and time missed this team did and yet be this good defensively UNF rult impressive.

3. On the flip side, after a slow start this team seems to be finding their footing a bit on the offensive side of the ball now too. For the 3rd game in a row Tennessee was over 1.3ppp offensively, they finished tonight at 1.38ppp, a really good number. Now, is that a product off opponent, or this team starting to get things going on that end after a lot of time missed and a slow start? Maybe a mixture of both? I will say after going 9/31 for 29% in their first 2 games from 3 they are 25/61 for 41% from 3 in their last 3 games, I don’t expect them to keep that number but in the middle around 36-37% would be nice.

4. Hard to single any one player out, 6 guys in double digits, JJJ wasn’t but does throw in 7&7 in typical JJJ fashion. Vescovi continues to show he is a guy Barnes loves at that lead guard position and tonight goes for 16/7/5, he’s really improved defensively and even with our depth at guard it wouldn’t be a shock to see him right there with Fulk for MPG, Barnes really likes blonde haired Vescovi.

5. I know some have talked about lineup changes etc, to me there’s no need, and I see no reason, this team is playing extremely well right now and seemingly finding a little grove after a little slow start. I like the freshman being able to come into the flow of the game and going with hot hands from there, there’s also nobody in the starting lineup who I feel isn’t playing well so completely unnecessary to even discuss imo.

6. On a slightly related topic what about my boy, Victor Bailey, oh c’mon, you didn’t think I was gonna mention him?! 25 minutes, 18 points and not just a 3pt shooter either, slashing and getting to the free throw line where he knocks them down at a high rate. Don’t look now but he leads the team in PPG through 5 games, not to shabby for a guy some said was a “waste of a scholarship”. Not saying he continues this pace, not saying he doesn’t, but I think we can all probably agree that he’s a valuable piece to this team and is a nice find/get from this staff, if he continues to develop he’s going to be a key piece to this Tennessee program in the future.

7. Tennessee moves to 5-0, there is absolutely no reason we shouldn’t be 6-0 at the end of this week and headed into what should be a highly anticipated game not many of us expected weeks ago as we open SEC play against Cuonzo Martin and Missouri. This team started a bit slow but that was to be expected all things considered, they’ve arguably looked better and better each game, hopefully we see another step forward in the next game and open SEC play with a win against Missouri.

GBO!
Did Freak attend this game last night? I was wondering if Freak had been to any basketball games this season. Freak please respond. Thank you Freak.

You would think that an insider such as yourself would know what you are talking about.

Picking apart? I’m looking ahead to when we’re not playing 0-5 crappy teams. That’s all.
I thought you had a good right up and didn’t blast anything you had to offer. Don’t take my comments personally.

St Joes is not a crappy team. Look at their schedule. They are better than at least half the SEC.

Sorry, should have maybe led with it wasn’t a shot at you or a jab, was just saying how we are finding negatives when the defense was still analytically elite...wasn’t a criticism towards you.

Somebody tell Vescovi that Blond totally washes him out. Not a good look.

Not that I want to sound like I know too much about cosmotology, but... you are absolutely right. Natural looked better. It's tough to improve on God.

On the other hand, maybe it'll keep away the female distractions. I once had a coach who told us at the beginning of the season, "No girlfriends. You can have a girlfriend when the season's over."

Santiago, if you are channeling your inner Dennis Rodman, please channel it into rebounds.

I thought St. Joseph's got to the rim a little too easily a little too often. I am fairly sure that Barnes' timeout midway through the second half was all about that. For Tennessee's future opponents, I think in scouting Tennessee they take a long, hard look at this film.

Exactly. We are created with colors that match. I was going to infuse God into it, but you did, so Bravo! And Girls----Dark Brown eyed Blondes give one impression. Not that that's bad or anything...

Speaking of scouting, we've got Bradley (6-2) vs #14 Mizzou (5-0) on tap tonight on SECN, 7pm EST,
followed by #7 West Virginia (7-1) vs #3 Kansas (7-1) on ESPN2 at 9pm EST.

Excellent writeup as usual.

It seems to me that Fulky has started a little slow on the offensive side, maybe this is just because UT has so many offensive weapons.

Wish we could have seen a little more of players 9-12 just to get them some experience for late in the year.
I think the idea is more that last year, we HAD to rely on Fulk. This year, as you said, we have so many other option, offensively.

Wishes for this team:
- Vescovi learn a RH'd drive/layup (last night, he drove from the right, and tried a LH'd layup). Barnes should make him do everything RH'd in practice for a couple of weeks.
- Fulk develop a 3pt shot, we need more from the 3pt line if we're playing small ball
- Somehow develop Uro's footwork, get him to jump rope or something, we're going to need him against big lineups. He sometimes impresses with his little hook shot and passing underneath.

I haven't paid attention to Mizzou until now. They look legit in the beginning of the season, I expect we both will be top 10 teams when we play.

Lol

That team played Kansas....the number 3 ranked team in the country, and they played Nova.....the number 5 ranked team in the country.

Both gave up more than Tennessee did.
Tennessee also scored more then either did.

Not sure there is ANYTHING negative someone could take from that game (as a Vol fan).

Excellent write up. Nothing for me to add other than it is so nice to watch a well-coached team do what they are supposed to do. Also, I have railed for Vescovi for two years now- kid is a player.

Agree. Seems like some are really underselling St. Joes based solely on their record. They’ve played some good teams and played them pretty decently. They probably should of beat Auburn. And we performed better than anyone who has played against them. It wasn’t our best defensive game so far, but it was far from bad. Especially when the refs were letting them run over people on the way to the rim. Had the refs not been allowing them to do that and calling fouls every trip on the defense (they did this both sides of the floor to be fair) we probably would of only given up about 55 or so.

Concerning 5, the 2 freshmen are clearly talented but are in a steep learning curve. They appear to be receptive to coaching and should continue to improve through out the season. They both make some splash plays but then get a little lost in the team flow which is understandable at this point. Both SV and Bailey due to their experience aren’t having as many mental mistakes and deserve their starting roles. Is years past we would have had to put both freshmen in the starting lineup and let them take their lumps like we did with JJJ. We’re fortunate to have the depth of talent where CRB can bring them along a bit slower. Will be interesting to see how the starting lineup and minutes played evolve as the season progresses
Well said.

Not to toot my own horn but I said a couple weeks ago that Bailey could be a more consistent Bowden and should get 25mpg.

If anybody needs winning lottery numbers then hit me up.
