BTO’s UT-Martin Postgame Report

Powell's shot is so smooth and almost always dead on, a thing a beauty. Best pure shooter since Lofton, no doubt, imo. Yeah, I came to that conclusion after one exhibition and real game (plus, 10 for Auburn, last year), but I'm right

I didn’t want to disrespect Lamonte pre shoulder injury because he was so smooth but yeah Powell might be our best shooter in 15 years

Kevin Johnson was very quick/fast, but went to the hole to dunk on you even at 6'2 or whatever. I, also think, so far, KC may already be as good of a shooter as KJ, but yeah, I see it

He’s a tad shorter but that quick burst and jump shot reminds me of him.

He’s special man. Love his game. Just hope we give him the keys

Man, I had pretty good seats and every jumper he shot looked "Steph Pure" except one. Good size, rebounds, good vision, moves well without the ball and the shot is a thing of beauty

He also gets off the floor quick and has good hops on that jumper. With that quick release impossible to bother it

1. Uros is a great program player, on the bench. He's just too slow, doesn't block shots, doesn't have a post up game. I love his energy, just not a notable contributor. We need Aidoo.
2. Powell is a smooth guy. Loved his offense tonight. Stays in the offense, and isn't afraid to shoot when open.
3. KC is the real deal. Speeds up, slows down, makes good decisions, shooting was beautiful. He'll be a 1st rounder this year. His size is the only downfall for the NBA, but at this level he will excel.
4. To go along with Powell, VBJ is just a lesser version of him. He's not quite the shooter, distributor, defender, or passer. His minutes will regress this year.
5. BHH obviously has the athleticism. He made a couple easy blocks, and besides (potentially) Aidoo will be our only "shot blocker". When he gets comfortable he will be a problem. He will steal all of Uros's minutes.
6. JJJ is what he is. He's never going to jump out during a game. He's still a stat stuffer and great contributor. IF he would click, he could be an All-SEC player primarily due to his defense and versatility.
7. Zeigler looked hyped up, but still kept control most of the time. He's a total jitterbug and left people falling out of their shoes. Not this year or even next year, but I predict he will make a run at All-SEC at some point. Great 4 year player, who will excel as an upperclassman.
8. Mashack will also be an incredible 4 year player. Athleticism and effort is excellent. Had a nice put-back at the end. Didn't really get to see his shot, but he will be a great starter as an upperclassman.
9. QDE, didn't see enough. However, he looks the part.
10. I'm sorry Vescovi, I didn't mean to make you 10th. Looked phenomenal off the ball, Zeigler, Powell, and Chandler are about to unleash him. He is a confident and consistent threat on offense especially with less on ball responsibility.
11. ON hit the boards hard, showed some great athleticism, but we saw two different players tonight. First half ON looked lost and outplayed by UTM players (same as he has been). Second half looked assertive and comfortable. I see it, I really hope he can make it click. If he does, we will go 3 deep on the frontcourt of above-average players.
12. We need late season 2019-2020 Fulk. He would open this offense up to the extreme. If Fulk is a consistent threat, then with our shooting our offense will be unstoppable.
13. Yo, can we get a few minutes of Aidoo?
14. We look solid. We have to grow a lot, but Barnes is a great developer. I can see us finishing 5th in the SEC or running away with it in 1st place. The talent is evident, should be a fun season of high highs, and due to our youth low lows.

I think this team is a top 3 lock in the SEC

He has incredible basketball instincts. He does it all with confidence. I’m not sure exactly how Pearl let this guy get away, but thanks for the gift, Bruce.

I don't know what's holding back JJJ offensively, but I wish he could figure it out. Defensively though, he was elite tonight. Honestly most of our run in the second half came from his defense. He had 5 steals and 4 blocks. That just doesn't happen.

I'm not even remotely sold on Zeigler. He needs to learn his limitations, and fast. Right now, he can't shoot and he's a poor finisher. He's going to have to learn one of those things or there's no way he can be effective at this level. I like his effort, but that's about it.

VJ didn't have a great game, but he did have 3 assists. For our frontline, I think we just need to rock with Fulky, ON, and BHH (and James at the 4 with any of those guys). I don't really think we can rely on Uros this year. He's not awful, but he's going to get exposed by quicker guards or posts. He can be used situationally, but he's also just not a good rebounder.

I think this team can be a really fun team and can make a deep run. Chandler is the difference, and the 3 ball. I worry about defense a little bit, but Fulky should help with that too.

He’s extremely young, and reclassified. I don’t expect him to get a TON of minutes this year as the year progresses. In the long run Chandler, Vescovi and maybe even Powell will handle most the PG duties IMO.

Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Florida and UK have the potential to be extremely good. I agree, we could very well finish top 3 or even 1. But we do not need to discredit the strength of the SEC this year.

How is what he said discrediting the SEC? Lol

So far, I like what I see from the offense. I know I've blasted it for being outdated and stale, so the early returns on the changes look positive in that regard.

Chandler appears to be Batman but we are going to have to find a Robin for him. And no, I dont think it can be Fulky, so someone will have to step up.

Also I would love to see a small ball lineup with JJJ at the 5. Obviously we couldn't live in it, but I could see that lineup as a change of pace that might bother some teams.

This year Barnes has moved away from 4/5 nearly interchangeable 6’7” +/- wing types on the floor together to two pretty clear sets of perimeter and post players.

Any combo of Vescovi, Chandler, ZZ, Powell, and Bailey are on the perimeter and any combination of Uros, Fulk, BHH, and ORN are filling the post spots. Mashack and JJJ are the holdover interchangeable tweener (3/small forward) types. 2 more posts (Aidoo/Tampa) and a third interchangeable type (QD (Pons Lite)) didn’t play. More 4s and PG/combo guards and far fewer 3s. Seems like 75% of the recent players were best suited as 3s. Now the 3s are JJJ and 2 freshmen that won’t be thrown into the rotation (although Powell can slide to a 3, but he’s going to be a really good combo/shooting guard).

I like having so many combinations available. If ANYBODY gets into foul trouble we’ll have a lot of options. Recently it was a huge problem whenever key players had to sit. Kyle Alexander’s injury lead directly to that Nun team from Chicago taking our Elite 8/Final Four spot. Bad officiating seemed to really disrupt things with quick, cheap fouls on guys like Grant. In the past seemed like we only had a couple of clear perimeter players and a couple of posts with half the roster or more being the mid-sized wing types that weren’t necessarily high quality rebounders or dangerous shooting threats.

More evidence that the Barnes is stubborn to a fault narrative was off target.

Thanks to everyone for their contributions to the thread. Had to go to a volleyball game last night. Gonna watch the game on YouTube later and provide some thoughts. BTO coming up big again.

Yeah, he’ll be missed a great deal. I said it after the exhibition and feel even more so now, I think Fulk should focus his energies on defense when he returns. I think that’s where he can make the biggest positive impact on the team. We’ve got lots of guys who can score, we need someone to clean up all the drives to the rim
This! Fulky could be the best garbage man in the league.
GBO!!

I predict Fulky will shine with several run outs a game where KC SV or JP feed him. Looking forward to seeing this group at full strength.
