Welcome from a Newbie. I have lurked about here for some time myself. I had to sign up to ask Old Vol about his Avatar.

Are you one of the Guys in that picture by any chance? If so, you are my cousin.

Cover of Sports Illustrated October 1967. A fine game against Alabama. Another fine game on National TV in 68. Helped Knock Bama out of National Title contention both years.

As regard the thread, I find it really annoying to read the same topic every few days. Shaeffer will transfer/He's the best QB/Ainge is the only way.

None of us are the one who gets to decide.

I know what its like to be a stranger in a strange land. Man let me tell you what, that Shellacking the Vols put on A&M finally got the Clemson fans around here to shut up. We nearly beat the Aggies by more points than both teams scored combined when the Aggies whupped the Tugers early in the Season. A&M is coming here this year, I may have to buy some Maroon and go.

No, that's not me. It's a great pic of the old days though, wouldn't you agree?

I sure hope you're related to the fellow in Orange, Tim Priest.

That was a great victory for the Vols. We had just ended the longest win-streak in the nation when we hammered the Tide. It's always good to hammer the Tide, whether they're 2-5, or in this case, coming off a 22 game unbeaten streak.

This game has special significance to me though. It was the first Division I college game I ever attended. I was with a group of recruits from Tennessee visiting that day. One of the guys in our group, who later went to Auburn, but was a Vol fan until they failed to offer, walks into a Birmingham restaurant after the game and declares, "Everybody order BEAR meat, it ain't very tough at all." Fortunately the Bama faithful could tell he had been sipping at the Jack and they showed mercy on us.

Welcome to the board.

Don't just lurk, get into the mix now.

It is a great picture and I wish I could find more of the Vols in Action during that time frame.

I was under the impression, and so is my Dad the vol in the picture is Jim (Jimmy) Weatherford. 2 Time All American DE for the Vols. Cousin Jim went on to block a Field Goal in the Closing seconds in '68 to deny the Tide another shot at the NC.

Look Here http://dynamic.si.cnn.com/si_online/covers.../1967/1030.html

If you are talking about Tim Priest the current commentator, that is not him. He is not old enough.

I believe that is a DB breaking up that pass. It might have been Albert Dorsey.

I had thought it was Tim, but Tim would have been a freshman during that year. It's a shame SI doesn't give more info on their classic covers.

I don't think that's Weatherford, but I could be wrong. I don't think it's likely that a DE would have been breaking up a pass like that beyond the line of scrimmage.

If you're interested in Vol history, this site has more old-timey pics than any site I know of.

Upon further review, it is Dorsey. You'll find this info at the Volunteer Information Bureau as this game is revisited and the SI cover is at the bottom of the page. You can even view short clip of the game there.

I will have to try find out from Jim if it is him or not. I was just always told that it was. Several of the online auction sites list the cover as being Dennis Homan and Jim Weatherford. Homan was Stabler's favorite receiver at the time.

Thanks for the site, that is some really nice stuff. I especially like the Dyergrams. Is their anyplace that play by play reporting or game synopsis online. It is interesting that thevib does not list Weatherford among their "Other Defensive All Americans". The utsports site does.

Jim is actually my Dad's first cousin. I am too young to remember any of it. I just remember it being talked about, mostly the blocked field goal.

It is a shame that SI does not have more information on the covers readily availble.

Thanks for the Avatar and the discussion.
