Budweiser Shootout

That was the best racing at Daytona in a long time. Yes, they had some big crashes but all 3 were caused by drivers being complete boneheads and pushing on the left side of a car in the turns which you just can't get away with anymore with the new rules in place. It was such a welcome change to see drivers being able to draft with who they wanted to, change lanes, change partners, and not be completely handcuffed to one other guy the entire run.

They've found the perfect balance it seems
- the two car tango just don't work for very long and they can't pull away from the pack with ease like they were able to last year. The benefits of the two car draft are mostly negated now and it works like it should - in spurts. If drivers can get their heads out of their respective hind ends Thursday and next Sunday should both provide some awesome, close racing.

The main reason I'm happy is that we are seeing guys being able to do their own thing again and not tied to another driver. Even though big ones can happen at LEAST the drivers now make their own choices and aren't completely dependent on another car out there.

....we'll just agree to disagree on that.

Not a fan of the freight train racing myself but the ending was still pretty good.

Hands down, considering he's had top notch rides his whole career and he's entering his 8th full season with no championships to show for it.

He does have a Nationwide championship and scored an owner's championship in the trucks.

The tango isn't totally dead. Anyone who saw the finish knows that. They just can't do it for more than a lap or so. I think the 500 will be more calm than the Shootout. Remember, last night all they were racing for was first place and a check. When you add 125 laps and points they will calm down.

Last season's Daytona 500 featured the most cautions in track history by using the tango.

it also featured the most lead changes.

10 of the 25 cars were running on the lead last night by the end of the Danica Patrick shootout. yeah, that's great.

Yeah so? Dale Jr has talent you don't win 18 Cup races on pure luck man.

He has talent but he ain't that good either. Look at his body of work at Hendrick. One win over the past 4 years, meanwhile Jimmie Johnson won not one, not two, but three Championships!

I like Dale Jr. too but I want him to prove me wrong and go win a Winston Cup Championship (Or whatever they want to call it, IMO the loss of tobacco sponsorship robed the sport of so much).

I have to say that I held my breath for most of the race. I like pack racing so much better than the tandems of last year, but it wears my nerves out.

It seems as though being a good wheel-man (-person?) will be more at more of a premium in the pack than the tandem. I was pleased for TBayne, but he'd not have won except for the tandem style.

On the other hand, I'd pull off the track and just sit rather than race in the pack near MAmbrose or DRegan. Damn, are they careless or just stupid?

For me the verdict is still out on going back to the pack racing. I will watch the duels and get a little better idea as far as the racing over a longer period of time. I will have to agree with an earlier poster the wrecks in the shootout were caused by someone being stupid and "bump" drafting in the corners.
