I bought into the Gruden plot which I now believe was more hype than substance. I still think something was there when you have respected media members reporting that Gruden was assembling a staff, but don't think the sides were at anything approaching an agreement, a storyline I was convinced of last year.
That said, Dave Hart bungled the hiring PROCESS. He should have had his man selected for weeks. Instead, he was jetting around the country at the last minute like Mike the headless chicken trying to find someone that would say yes. And all of this at the University of Tennessee, which was, for all the handwringing, still a top 15 job. (Maybe better. A lot of coaches would actually rather ressurrect something than follow a legend.) For that reason, I am convinced he is both ego-driven and imcompetent.
Now Butch has definintely exceeded my expectations, especially on the recruiting trail, and I think Hart may have stumbled into a good hire/fit for Tennessee. Still tired of looking at the guy. Hope he retires soon.
