If Neal is one of our best players we are screwed. He's not even the best back.
Physically Neal is a great talent. He was very highly rated out of HS, and his size and speed are SEC quality. Those things have never been the issue.
It is the mental aspects. Great TBs come in various shapes and sizes, but they generally share something in common. Toughness and vision.
One of the reasons Dooley's staff tinkered with him in the slot was his aversion to hitting the hole, and or seeing the hole in the first place. We saw some improvement in this area last year. Lane is a more natural, between the tackles runner. Neal was leading rusher despite missing two games with injury.
If you noticed, the running game really flourished last year when they ran the one back set out of the shotgun with a lot of zone read. They wore UGA out with this. (he had 104 rushing and 53 receiving) This should fit well with Jone's offense. If you line Neal up in the I, then forget it. But of course that doesn't even fit with Jones' scheme.
I definately think we've yet to see the best of Neal. He could actually really benefit from this coaching change as much as anyone.
Lane and Neal were both solid 4-star prospects. Should be exciting to see what this staff can do with their talents. If they make improvements like last year, it could be good stuff.
Everyone kept going on and on about AJ. I've challenged this board, on more than one occassion to name me any noteworthy game changing play by AJ (on defense), and I've never had one person even comment. The guy is overrated. Dooley pumped this kid up, but he has never been a game changer, and looked like he was running in mud at times last year. I'd say this staff will be on him to drop about 15 pounds or move to end.
