Can someone who understands these things explain. Is the addition 2.7 mil dependent on his performance on the field, rankings, bowl games and such?

no. that's part of his guaranteed annual compensation.

Buyout is $2 million per year remaining. So currently it's $12 million (6 years left). He has to mitigate though.

Looks like if fired in 3 years, which would be 2015, buyout is $3m.

The buyout is 2 mil per contract year remaining. Contract year begins on 12/7. Date to remember. Folks are looking at the buyout if he leaves.

Not a terrible contract. The buyout seems a little high, but we're safeguarding ourselves from being a stepping stone as well in the contract. Give/Take.

There are 2 things I liked about his press conference.
1) He stressed life outside of football. He stressed his players have to be model citizens, they have to treat people right, and they have to do well in class. I think that this is #1 in stabilizing a football program, and Dooley did a fairly good job of getting that ball rolling. I think things will smooth over as we get some of our lazier, entitled players into the NFL.
And 2) He seems very dedicated. He used "WE" like he really included and thought of himself as a Tennessee Volunteer. I like a coach that says we're a Dream Job for them. I have said many times that I would rather have a 3* recruit that wanted to be here and would bleed orange than a 4* that kind of liked it and was only here for the free ride.
