Butch should not sign the Maximum allowed this year

If we keep making all these great suggestions and Butch reads them and does them, we will really never learn if he can coach without our help. I'd hate to think we had to pay so much for a coach that all he had to do is listen to us. Make him work for his pay.

Precisely.

I kind of agree. If he can close with any of the following Bell, Lawson, Green, Chongo, Morris, North, miller, Walton, Levanberry, Ford, Ford, Gibson, Alexander or Barber. I would take any of them. I would not want though ransoms to fill in the 27.-

As long as we can restrain our urge to post our own variations of the power spread on this here forum...the General was lucky he didn't have interference from this board when he was running the single wing

As it stands now, there will be 22 Seniors and at most 3 possible early NFL departure (Tiny, Maggit, A.J. Johnson). It’s not like they need 100 players in the next class. And getting the maximum number from this class will have little to no effect on next year’s class.

The players this staff has been talking to ... has been able able to sway towards considering UT (despite where they're verbally committed)? I'll take as many as they can sign.

Unless they are mostly high 3 star and 4/5 star quality.

I believe we can sign up to 27 players this year. However, with the late start due to the coaching change, I feel like it would be smarter to sign 23-24 this year and leave those extra spots open until next year when Butch will be in a much stronger position with the 4 and 5 star players.

I don't like the idea of filling out the class with a bunch of unranked 2 and 3 star guys, if that's what it comes down to.

As a bonus, we can reward some walk-on guys with 1 year rides this year by setting some scholarships back.

IMO bad idea. sign 27 great players this year and butch will keep signing great players and thats how we bulid back to the top of the mountains (thats smokey mountains)

It's pretty much a given that no one here is Butch Jones.

Repeating it over and over in posts is somewhat pointless. The OP is entitled to his opinion.

I think Jones ends up signing 24-25 and holds a couple of spots for some 4-5 star types he feels he can develop relationships with over the course of next season. No point in adding scholarship players with warm bodies just to fill out a roster.

You can do that with walk ons and not tie up a scholarship for four years or get into hot water like Saban did with handing out medical scholarships or basically telling players to hit the road after one season as he recruited over players a few years ago.

I sorta understand, but I didn't know we were taking a bunch...filling some needs is very important. I'll definitely have to go with the coach on this one.

agreed - the max # this class wouldnt have an effect until 2015 recruiting cycle - by the time any projects taken this year that didnt pan out would have been cycled out of the program - so signing 25-27 doesnt really hurt anything

Why don't we let coach Jones decide on how many players to sign....after all he's earning 3 million/year to make this type of decision.....if that's OK with you

couldnt you say that for about 80% of the posts on here? what kind of thread were you hoping to see when you looked on the football forum in january? not even starting on how irrelevant your post is since its been said repeatedly, included the FIRST RESPONSE with several likes already. Or did you just read the title, and post without reading any of the other responses? Anyway, I think it is an interesting thread topic.

One problem CDD had was starting his first year with only 61 I believe on the roster competing with teams with 85 on their rosters. We never want to go thru that again and CDD gradually had to build it back over his time here to 85 - IMO CDD's main contribution to our program. CBJ is on top of things and I have admired his every move. I'm an old coach and am in awe of ideas he has that I didn't even think of. He may choose to save a couple of spots but he will recruit to win starting YEAR1 DAY1. I agree with you on one thing - NEXT YEAR WILL BE AN INCREDIBLE RECRUITING YEAR FOR TENNESSEE. So if you're a recruit you may want to lock it up early since NCAA has annual limits. Coach Jones has won championships everywhere he has been and all the players and their parents loved him. This VOL coach is going to be a GREAT one!!!

bUTch knows what he's doing.

Most strong terams have solid Junior and Senior classes that have has 3 or 4 years to learn, get stronger and gain experience.

We haven't had that in 5 years or longer.

It's still going to take us a few years to build up to the point that we have solid Junior and Senior classes so please try to learn to be patient.

I believe that over the next 3 or 4 years we'll see bUTch bringing in better and better players as he gets the full recruiting cycle going properly and as our staff has time to develope serious relationships with kids and their parents.

More wins will also help alot and getting back to any kind of bowl next year and winning it is a positive step in the right direction and will also give our team extra practice time and an extra game to add to their experience.

I don't expect a great class this year or next but in year 3 I believe bUTch and staff will have set things up to start getting better and better classes each year.

We're just on step 1 right now and it takes alot of steps to climb back up to the top again.

VFL...GBO!!!
