..."Maybe you don't feel a certain loyalty to your state (TN). Maybe you don't have an affinity for it. But consider this...when your house is on fire, who comes to put it out? When you have a home break-in or an emergency out in public, who do you call? Tennesseans. Tennessee Policemen and Firemen. Not public servants from Mississipi or Arkansas, or Alabama. Hard working Tennesseans are footing the bill, and that includes your parents.

When your mom and dad are trying to run a local business, who is coming in to buy their goods or services? Tennesseans. All your friends you have grown up with...they are Tennesseans. Do you suppose, in Europe, there is some German, French or British pride? Sure there is. They are what Tennessee is...a sovereign state joined by a union. Why then should you have no pride in the state you grew up in? And if you do have pride, why not show it by representing your state on the Big Stage?"

This goes for the Nashville kids, too. The Jalen Ramsey's and Itavius Mathers'.

Not sure if you are serious or not, but that sounds like a terrible idea. Telling a kid how they should feel? Not a great way to endear yourself to a kid and his parents.

Yeah that's pretty much the worst possible way of going about it I can imagine. It almost sounds like a threat.

We need you on the staff OP. Memphis would be locked down. All these recruits whose houses burned down would be locks.

Have you actually spoken to an 18-year-old in the last 25 years or so?

No disrespect, but I am pretty sure they'd have their cell phone out well before you got to the words "hard working."

I just don't see that play getting too far with a kid today.

Unlike the previous "coach", you're going to see so much, you'll know what I had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

That is why I'm a Vol fan. Its all about pride in your home state not flavor of the month.

It's a very good thing that players from other states don't think that way, or does this only apply to Tennessee residents.

I've posted this in the past, and I'll continue to post it till it no longer makes sense.....If you WANT to come to Tennessee, and you can contribute, and Tennessee WANTS you, Tennessee would be tickled to have you..If you are from elsewhere, but fall in love with Tennessee, and they want and need you, again, tickled to have you..But if you have NO desire, NO interest, have NO pride in the state of Tennessee, could not care less where you go to school, and don't want to come here, then go elsewhere..WHY would we want you here..?I do NOT cry, beg, or threaten if you don't have a burning desire to wear orange..As I always say, "Get your Arse in Tennessee, or get your arse out"...what possible good is it to recruit/get someone, that desires another location.....GO....!!:wavey:

It's not a matter of endearing, in trying to emphasize state pride/loyalty. I bet a lot of these kids never think of these things.

"Well, I'm closer to Oxford than I am Knoxville."

Does the Oxford Fire dept or Police come when you have an emergency. Did Oxford residents offer your folks a job, or if they run their own business, did Oxford folks put food on the table bills (buying your parents food or services)? The point is...you live in TENNESSEE...not Bama, Ark, or Miss....even if it is a longer drive to Knoxville. Tennessee is still Tennessee until you cross the Mississipi River. Some of these Memphis kids seem to lose sight of that.

All Coach Jones needs to say is "I'm doing it better than the last guy" and show them by winning games.

I do like selling a kid on the state university and the brand and the pride of playing for said school. Not sure I'd go with the exact public servant angle. Tie in the pride of playing for your state institution with the traditions, the exposure, the facilities, the notoriety, the chance to play, putting players in the NFL etc.... Plus, know who you're talking to. That angle may play with some kids, may completely turn off others. But I wouldn't dismiss OPs "theory" or approach completely out of hand.

Being in the Memphis area has you closer to all of the SEC west except A&M. We have to accept that fact and treat the area like its 6 hours away and not anything else.
