Butch's Memphis Recruiting

This isn't true. The Memphis Media wants you to think that its a Memphis town, but its a pretty even split between OM, UT, and Memphis. But there are literally fans of pretty much every team in the SEC. Bama, Miss. St., and Arky are probably in the second level of fans in Memphis but I have seen Auburn, LSU, Georgia, and Florida fans as well. I've lived here for almost 30 years now and there are PLENTY of UT fans. It seems that there is a large concentration of UT fans in the suburb of Bartlett while Collierville and Germantown have a lot of OM fans. Teams like Whitehaven, East, White Station, Ridgeway, as well as a few of the private schools like CBHS, Briarcrest, MUS, and ECS, all produce high D-1 talent. But the area is pretty evenly divided and it has always seemed like Tennessee is more interested in VA and NC recruits that recruits in Memphis. But perhaps with the added competition from Fuente and Muschamp (Plus Dabo) in the Va/NC/SC region, Butch will focus more on Memphis. There is always plenty of talent here.

I was speaking strictly about recruiting, not fandom. And you made my point. With so much D1 talent in Memphis, Tennessee has never pulled in much.

Memphis doesn't exactly produce a lot of SEC talent, it produces a to on lower level FBS and FCS talent and maybe 2 or 3 higher level recruits a year, I'd say we have done pretty good getting the ones we want.

That is absolutely true. Over the last few years, middle Tennessee has produced many more SEC caliber prospects than the Memphis area has. The public schools really don't produce a high volume of SEC prospects and when they do, those players often come with academic eligibility concerns (such as Jovon Robinson Auburn).

Fwiw, I lived in Collierville from 2003-2007 (Halle Plantation subdivision) and it would typically take me 5 hours and 45 minutes to get to Knoxville, stopping once for gas. In terms of fans living in greater Memphis, based on what I observed I think you guys are crazy if you think that Ole Miss has the numbers that we do. We have a very large alumni base there. Butch Jones has shown what he will do to land a recruit he needs (Richmond) in Memphis. To criticize him for ignoring talent in that part of the state is just ridiculous. There are simply not that many great prospects.

Memphis has a huge Tennessee following. But like Dooley, Jones isn't paying attention. He is a liar worse than Dooley about the fence building. And the coaching is actually better again so expect to see more talent out of this area again. Just not headed to Knoxville.

Your name fits.
