Buzz Williams is a class act.

Thank you for posting this, Jersey Moonshine*. I learned a lot from it. Before Buzz would respond, you could almost watch him translating in his head from coach speak to lay English.

That's a tough roster accommodation to have to make, to depend on getting to the foul line for all your offensive scoring potential to be productive. He didn't mention it, but I'd guess they could easily get fatigued without frequent foul shot game stoppages. Wonder if that contributed to our second half explosion?

* (Sadly, from what I hear, "Jersey moonshine" could just be a euphemism for most of Jersey's groundwater. Be a blessing up there, JM! )
Bruiser, that's an old handle. I've since moved the beautiful Berkshires of western Mass.

He pretty much nailed it in his statements. No 5 is the engine that runs the machine. I thought he was very accurate in his assessments! If he didn’t remind me of Curley, I could believe him more!

Just watched his post-game press conference. No excuses or coach speak. Made sure to congratulate Rick Barnes on win number 800.

Dude is and has been campaigning for this job for years. And i would gladly have him once CRB hangs it up.

He seemed slightly unlikable from watching him interact on the court, but from listening to him in his presser he does sound like a class act. His team is trending on the wrong side of the NCAA bubble, is on a losing streak, and got smacked on the road by 35. Yet, in his presser he spoke calmly, was very complementative, and didn't hide from anything. Many other coaches in the same position likely wouldn't have acted as upstanding.

I nearly started a thread last night w this Presser. What impressed me was his breakdown of our roster and his assessment of each player. Very interesting and informative. It's as if he pulled the curtain back on the ATM think tank and spoke candidly ... and that after a 35pt road slaying.

What we know is that he knows how to act and speaking in a classy manner in front of a mic. would be hard for me to comment on how classy he is outside of that.

Didn't he want to coach here after Cuonzo? We would had two Buzzes and two Butches in our coaching history.
I think I remember hearing or reading that Buzz said when he was the coach at Virginia Tech that he would crawl to Knoxville if he was offered the coaching job at UT. He would have been a massive upgrade in my opinion over Tyndal or Clownshoes. It's hard for me to hate on him after the misery that those two put us through.

Maybe timing was bad for him. One of the best of all time was available

I like Buzz and he has proven ability to build a program, but he seems to cap out. His interviews are engaging, and he clearly eats and drinks basketball, but you wonder if it hurts him as a recruiter. He doesn't appear to be very good in that area and may have to live in the transfer portal for players. A&M has to be his dream job given his background, but you wonder how much patience the program has.

When he was at Marquette, he made the NCAA tournament 5 out of 6 years. At Virginia Tech he overachieved and make the tournament 3 out of 5 years. If he misses out on the tournament again this year at A&M, which appears likely, he would have only made the NCAA Dance 1 time out of 5 years at A&M. Not good especially with all the resources they have and after finishing 15-3 in the SEC last year. Thus far, strange up and down season. Losing to Vandy and then Arkansas (at home) were very damaging of late for Buzz. No shame in losing to UT on the road, but we crushed them. He may have to win his last 4 to get a bid to NCAA.

For much of my life I wanted us to hire Buzz Williams. Love his energy and level headedness. He's a bit too direct and emotional at times, but his kids always compete.

At VT, Buzz’s teams played above their talent level and were always scrappy. He never had a good big man and didn’t really recruit at a high level. I think he caps out for those reasons not for lack of coaching technique or game planning.

Pretty sure his family was from TX which was part of the appeal of TAMU.

In his presser I appreciated that he answered the question about ZZ at such length and so thoughtfully, highly complimentary. If I were a coach it would probably be the hardest thing for me to praise a team and players who just humiliated us on national TV haha. But yeah he’s first rate, I like Buzz.

He was courted but had just jumped to VT. Timing never worked out but we were able to get his desire for the job to Hart. He wanted out of Marquette once they got a new President and if he would’ve just waited and not taken the VT job, he would’ve been our coach.
