whose own state? Byrd's? The endorsement came more than a week after his state voted, and typically Senators' endorsements have very little impact on how voters in that state vote anyway.
Governors and state legislators tend to have more impact, but not always. NC Gov. Mike Easley endorsed Clinton in the Dem primary here, but Obama still beat her by 15 pts. or so.
