BYU goes independent

It seems that they may have a slightly exaggeraged view of their legitimacy as a major program.

Or that you may have a problem realizing that they are a consistant top 15 program and have been for the last 30 years. A National championship and Heisman trophy winner. Kinda have the same record and tale of the tape as UT in that time frame... Just sayin....GBO

They've finished in the top 15 7 times in 30 years, not unimpressive by any means, but not so much for a school that has lived in a generally small pond
Just Sayin.

Tennessee 16 times in last 30years.

four times 14th
one 15th
2 12th

So I suppose we have had the better run. but to think they are Utah or Boise is a mistake. Their history is much deeper and richer. And I'm a Baptist...LOL

It would be stupid for Tennessee to go independent too.

A National championship

The biggest joke in the history of college football.

Tennessee was 7-4-1 that season. I would have taken UT and given a touchdown if the Vols had played BYU that season.

The sad thing about it is that BYU's 1984 national championship is, to this day, a big reason why a legitimately good team outside a power conference can't get considered for the national championship (including a very good BYU team that went 14-1 in 1996). BYU beat 13 half-baked teams and no one else could stay undefeated, the voters handed them the title, and then all woke up the next morning and said "What in the hell did we just do?"

BYU thinks they are the "Notre Dame of the West" That's laughable. All the progress that had been made and probably AQ qualification for the MWC in two years all thrown away. They got jealous of their big brother Utah and got desperate. Those arrogant pricks think they can ever get Notre Dames independent deal into the BCS is laughable as well.

Over on the Mountain West board, the arrogant BYU fans are acting like they are entitled to AQ status because they won a watered down National championship. It will be fun watching them fail as an independent. The MWC AD's are all voting now to no longer schedule BYU after this move. Good luck putting together a decent schedule or TV deal BYU. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out

They are claiming BYU-TV has 50 million viewers.. I was actually able to block it from my cable lineup :)

Mormons are delusional in thinking they are "spreading the message" Their football team has been voted many times as the most hated football team. So by that logic they should stop trying to get more exposure

Word is BYU is waiting on a invite from the Big 12....which makes even less sense if there big thing is their tv network.

You do realize that the comparison with UT has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not BYU made the right decision? It's Logic 101. I think they made a bad move unless they have been guaranteed some benefit for doing this.

ESPN is partnering with them. They are going to have their own network and I am sure plenty of games on ESPN. This move has been discussed for a while, it's only come to public attention as of late.

They get a $1.5M payout currently. My guess is they will be making a lot more than that under this deal.

Whom exactly is BYU going to be playing once they have to find 12 teams a year to play a non-conference game against them? Do you really think that ESPN is going to take SEC games off its Saturday night schedule to show BYU vs New Mexico State?

I don't doubt that this move will be more profitable in the short term, but this move ensures a long slide into complete irrelevance for BYU football. Maybe BYU doesn't care; maybe they think that there are enough Mormons who watch football that they can make more money off BYU-TV than they could in a conference. They'd better be right, because they've certainly guaranteed that Mormons will be the only ones watching them play at all.

I can't imagine how pissed I would be if I were a BYU fan. You're part of a rising conference which looks headed for an automatic BCS bid, you're looking forward to years of titanic struggle with TCU and Boise Sate....and then suddenly all that's taken away in favor of an endless series of meaningless games against WAC teams. You don't even get to play for anything anymore, exactly, since there's no conference championship to win. The administration has killed basically everything fun about football season because their accountants they could make more money in the next three years on their own. Serves them right for rooting for BYU in the first place, I guess.

I think has more to do with the LDS Church than it does their football program. It's about trying to broaden their exposure.

Exposure-Yep, a big part of it, I think. Looking to expand recruiting base. Buncha Mormons across the US want to see THEIR chosen team. Local talk says it a 2-3 year lull 'til they position themselves for a better conference, FWIW. Go Utes, Whip................they ass.
