BYU goes independent

It's about church exposure in the same way that Nebraska moved to the Big 10 because it was a great academic fit. I don't care what the rhetoric is, the reason for all these moves is money.

Expanded church exposure would be a Saturday night ESPN primetime game in November against Boise or TCU for the conference championship and a bid to the Fiesta Bowl, with all the soft-focus Sportscenter profiles that would go with it. It's hard to see how removing themselves completely from the American sports consciousness -- which is what will be the case in a few years -- broadens their exposure.

Whom exactly is BYU going to be playing once they have to find 12 teams a year to play a non-conference game against them? Do you really think that ESPN is going to take SEC games off its Saturday night schedule to show BYU vs New Mexico State?

I don't doubt that this move will be more profitable in the short term, but this move ensures a long slide into complete irrelevance for BYU football. Maybe BYU doesn't care; maybe they think that there are enough Mormons who watch football that they can make more money off BYU-TV than they could in a conference. They'd better be right, because they've certainly guaranteed that Mormons will be the only ones watching them play at all.

A lot of this solely depends on what ESPN can rig with scheduling. Don't underestiamte the power of the 4 letters. You throw ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU plus the fact college football is a Thursday-Saturday scheduling beast now, and it makes more sense. My guess is ESPN is banking more people would watch BYU on a Friday night as opposed to Miami OH vs Ball State.

My guess is they get 6 or 7 games from teams in the BCS conferences and then 5 or 6 against the New Mexico States of the world. I will be interested to see if there would be an annual ND/BYU game in the near future as well.

BYU fans were crying when Utah bolted for the PAC 10. Now they turn around and do the same thing. In the mean time, the rest of their sports get to compete in the worthless West Coast Conference. Those kids didn't accept a scholarship to play D1AA. They should gouge interest from other schools and transfer.

In the end, BYU comes off looking like hypocrites and screwed over the rest of their sports. All for money and publicizing their religion.

I wouldn't normally post bible verses but I believe the Book of Mormon uses this quote as well... Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is the root of all evil"

What BYU fan won't be excited to turn on BYU TV and see something other than what is usually on. Since 50 million people get BYU TV, Their ratings should far exceed any College team in the nation! Talk about spreading the message!

On a realistic note. I don't see what BYU going independent accomplishes other than higher revenue. The MWC was only 2 years away from AQ status had they stayed the course and BYU stayed. Losing Utah hurt but it wasn't anything that couldn't be replaced by bringing Boise's BCS numbers in to replace them. BYU also hung their other sports out to dry by putting them in WCC... The WCC doesn't even support some of the sports BYU has. Like womens Softball. I realize these sports aren't revenue generating but what does that say to those teams by joining such a weak conference in all other sports. They don't gain anything in Basketball other than Gonzaga to play.

So if anyone can answer the question as to why they left, other than the revenue reasons, I would love to hear it. The BCS is not going to make a Notre Dame exception for BYU. Are they waiting for a Big 12 invite? I see their mormon association as a liability rather than an asset to other conferences. The MWC had to put up with their "we don't play on sunday" making scheduling for certain sports a nightmare.

Yeah, and only people on the west coast would watch. I think they want to expand beyond that. Hence a 6 game series with Notre Dame. BYU is a different animal than most other schools. I really do think a lot of this has to do with their church.
