For the past several months, I have noticed TDOT crews in eastern TN digging ditches in the median of I-40 and burying four cables there. The cables are orange, white, black, and blue and are each about 1-1/2" diameter. Anybody know the purpose of these cables? I have searched the TDOT website to no avail.

Are they cables? They reminded me of Pex, like you would use for water lines.

I haven't actually inspected them that closely. Are you thinking that they might be natural gas lines or something similar?

Finally putting in the automatic car lanes I dreamed about as a kid. Hit the destination button and go.

Seriously doubt that's what it is. Probably just TDOT lines for communication, signs, etc.

Sounds like fiber optic cable. Probably Google FIOS.

Fiber optic is a single line, about 2" in diameter. Absolutely no chance it's Google Fiber. How long has it been active and it's still only widely available to a single city/area.I wish they would expand at a rapid pace if only for the reason of making the ripoff that is Comcast go bankrupt.

You should really understand what you're talking about before you chime in.

Turn on the hazards lights and pull over and ask them.
:good!:

What's to understand? It's a single line. :hi:

There's all kinds of fiber. The TAT 14 is a little bit bigger than a microfiber that you'd use on a small business.

And you should always install spare duct for possible future use with any underground cable. :hi:
