I think the season opener versus Cal game will be the most important game of the season next year. I know it's early, I know it's non-conference, but this game is one of the most important games UT has played in the last several years. This will be a good indication of the direction of our football team and the improvements it has hopefully made. We may lose to Cal but let's hope that it's Cal that beats us and and not us not beating ourselves by committing turnovers in the redzone and being stagnant and predictable on offense. A UT win in this game will give our guys some much needed confidence to take on the Florida's, Alabama's and Georgia's. I know a lot of people may disagree with me about this, but this game is huge and is pretty much a must win for the Vols. I apologize if something like this has already been posted.

I agree 100 percent but the problem is that the Fulmer lovers are already trying to set-up low expectations in the hopes that people will not be disappointed if Cal comes in to K-town and knocks us stupid. Regardless of what happened last year, as if it could be ignored, this team is loaded with talent. The 2002 recruiting class was #2 in the nation, the best we've ever had at UT. The '03 and '04 classes were both Top 20. There is no reason in the world, other than bad coaching, that we should not be able to take it to UF and UGA this year with the players we've got.

Welcome to the board.

I can't disgaree with that sentiment.

A lot can be gained with a win and a whole lot can be lost with a loss.

A win reestablishes us as a team to be reckoned with and a loss puts a huge question mark on the success of the coaching changes and rebuilding, or retooling process.

A win bumps us to the top 15 and a loss keeps us out of the top 25.

A win proves we are better than the #2 team in the Pac10 and a loss puts question marks on games with FL, GA, LSU and possibly Bama and ARK.

We need a win against Cal in a big way.

Its gonna set the tempo for the season. No doubt this game is huge. I just hope our guys know that if we do lose, not all is lost. Its OOC, and we still have the SEC to play for.

Moderators please bare with me and don't delete this, but every VOL fan needs to read this and rededicate themselves to UT Football.

:clapping: Wish that I was on old Rockytop
Down in the Tennessee hills.
Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rockytop
Ain't no telephone bills.

Once I had a girl on Rockytop
Half bear, the other half cat,
Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda-pop
I still dream about that.

Rockytop, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good old Rockytop,
Rockytop, Tennessee.
Rockytop, Tennessee.

Once two strangers climbed old Rockytop
Lookin' for a moonshine still.
Strangers ain't come down from Rockytop,
Reckon they never will.

Corn won't grow at all on Rockytop -
Dirt's too rocky by far.
That's why all the folks on Rockytop
Get their corn from a jar.

Trapped like a dog in a pen.
All I know is it's a pity life
Can't be simple again. :dance2:

Now with that being song or said, you true Vols fan need to get rid of the negativity. It's almost time to put on that orange and white and go crazy! I don't give a rat's azz who we play. I am going into every game with the mindset that we are going to win ! We are a high class program but some of you all sound like you're rooting for Tennessee State and not The University of Tennessee. Snap out of it, we had a bad year :gun: last year but let's get OFF of that, its a brand new year, time to regroup, Show Up and Show Out. Last Year was Last Year so let it go ! Now will my real Vol fans stand up and be accounted for ?

I totally agree with what you guys are saying. I truly believe that if UT wins the game against Cal the rest of the SEC will have a very confident and powerful football team to deal with for the rest of the season. This team is young and lacks confidence in their abilities and their coaches abilities right now and I believe that it will take a big win against a team like Cal for this team to get that confidence back for themselves and the coaches. I know as a player you have to have faith in your abilities and the people standing beside you in the huddle, and you most definately have to have faith in your coach and the decisions that he is making on the sidelines. If this team ever finds that confidence then I believe that we could see something very special over the next couple of years with all of the talent that we have.

The cal game isn't that important IMO. The only way an SEC team gets a BCS bid anymore is to win the SEC championship. So the games against Fl and Ga are much more important. LSU is probably the 3rd most important because of the caliber of their program, their ranking, and the effect a loss will have on SEC standings.

The Cal game has no impact unless your playing for a NC. I don't think anyone on this board thinks UT has a realistic shot at a NC next season.

Well I beg the differ. I think they have a chance just like any other team. The Oklahoma's, USC'S Florida's, and Ohio States's have to stand up and pee just like our Vols do, we have just as much of a chance than any other team in The NCAA to win The National Championship. " Remember now the game has to be played on the field " It sounds one way on paper but still you have to lace up and spat up and go hard for 60 minutes!

Post of the Year Award.

This board has been so negative for the last few months that it is hardly recognizable any more. If you don't like Coach Fulmer, and you don't like the football team, and you don't like the University of Tennessee, don't torture yourself. There are enough of us orange glasses-wearing, blindly devoted, eternally optimistic SHEEP who love the Vols win or lose , to make up for the loss of you nay-sayers who can find nothing good to say because we had a losing season. So all you folks who would love to see Coach Fulmer fired, and you who take delight in every offseason mishap, go ahead, go root for Vandy, or God forbid , Florida, because the Vols don't need you.

You know who you are.

I know what you mean LIO, there has been a lot of negativity around here but I think that is what happens after a 5-6 season.

I would classify myself as a Fulmerite, but he has used his muligan imo. We better get it turned around this year or I am moving to the dark side. :D

They sure like to cash our VASF checks, so I'm going to guess they do need us. I'm saddened that America has devolved to the point where blind devotion is something to be proud of, instead of the basis for ridicule.

I think we prefer the term loyalty.

Cry me a river. It's just a GAME for heaven's sake. Do they FORCE you to sign those checks, hatvol?? And my blind devotion is not one bit worse than your doomsday negativity.

What a shame we can't discuss the Vols without labels like, Fulmerite and Fulmer haters.

It's not about the man, really. It's about the program.

Believing in another year to right the ship is not treason, nor is believing that he should have been fired after the 5/6 debacle.

What is treasonous is throwing out the hateful labels.

Everyone should be able to express their opinion on the subject without being labeled.

What we'd all do well to understand is; when I call you a Fulmer hater, it invites the obvious response of 'Fulmerite.'

Neither might be the case, but the rhetoric should be more civil. It's a shame we have to stoop to the type rhetoric you find on a bama board.

LIO, blindly devoted? Have you not ever seen her after the women lose to UConn? You would think the world was coming to an end. :p

This board is light years ahead of any BAma board I have ever visited. Even with the negativity and the lack of spelling and punctuation, I'll take VolNation any day of the week over any other board.

I agree, but on this topic of Coach Fulmer we're mighty darned close.

Are you saying there is something WRONG with that? I remember a certain poster who got bent out of shape when TBA ran out of HOT DOGS.

I respectfully disagree. I do not think anyone on here is so foolish as to think that this is a national championship year for Tennessee. The goal needs to be to win the SECE, first and foremost. While it is true that beating Cal might give you "confidence" heading towards Florida, the reality is that five minutes into the Florida game no one on either side is going to be thinking about which team beat who two weeks before.

The biggest game of the year for UT will most likely either be Florida or Georgia, as it always is. You can't tell right now because the scenarios to win the SECE always seem to turn on unexpected developments in ohter parts of the conference.

Look at it this way. If you lose to Cal, everyone on here will go, well, that doesn't matter now because we just wanted to find our way back into the SEC mix. If you beat them, everyone on here will be talking about how you can't get too excited because Cal is probably just another preason overrated PAC-10 dummy and how you need to focus on what's important, which is the SEC.

Why does loyalty have to mean we can't say negative things?

You're loyal to your family, but you know of their shortcomings and will let them know when they need to fix something? Right?

Please don't think that loyalty is defined as optimism, because it isn't. The fact that we post here after a terrible season is proof we are loyal.
