Caldwell -- "Memphis definitely outplayed us today"

Seems like the studio pundits and courtside commentators are asking the same thing that’s on all our minds. Can they win with this style against teams with equal or better talent? The FSU and Iowa games are evidence that they can but it’s not going to be easy or pretty. Memphis game showed that also.
I think that is the wrong question. I think the more relevant question is can they win shooting 40% from the field (including a subpar 32% from 3).

Many of these missed layups often led to transition chances for Memphis.

For sure, but also sprinkled in with every coach's love of grumpiness regarding her own team and with Kim's fierce embrace of her "Mean Chipmunk" persona.

Who was it that labeled her a chipmunk- Spearman?

That is such an epic reframing. When CKC was hired, the narrative was "oooh, she is a young hottie!!!" which is not an ideal cultural narrative for a woman in a position of authority.

But, now she is the "Mean Chipmunk". I mean it's game over for everyone else . She is going win 12 national championships.

Who? I guess it depends on the person.
Serious question when has basketball been this much about style points? Not really sure what standard some are holding Tennessee to because I haven’t seen many if any pretty games played in WBB this season.
For example, the 90-75 Tenn vs Memphis game showed no more than the 74 - 60 LSU vs Murray State game. Murray State played Memphis this season and won by 4 pts.

I think the "system" has just become an easy narrative for the media to harp on. We have had many teams before that rely on the 3 ball and we have had teams that like to play pressure defense. What is distinctive is that CKC has combined these two orientations (often 3 pt dominant teams want to play a more deliberate style) and her mass substitution strategy is also more distinctive. However, against tougher comp, CKC does shorten her bench and rolls with a first and second five and some intermingling as the game goes on. 5 players had over 20 minutes; Tess got 18.

I lost count of the number of layups they missed. Make those and its the blowout we expected. Very uncharacteristic of players. Must have been lack of concentration or rushing shots. Memphis did harass them all game.
I agree. I had to finally turn it off because it was about as atrocious a display of the game of basketball I've witnessed. Not just LVs but Memphis too. Its hard for me to watch a game where the ball is volleyed from one side of the goal to the other and missing over and over again. Players dribbling the ball off their legs etc out of bounds. I'm pulling for Coach Caldwell to be highly successful and of course win a NC (she seems like a great person, coach, and motivator with the right attitude for the Vols) but I simply can't endure a game like last night. Hope that doesn't sound overly critical... JMO.

This makes so much sense.
Tennessee is leading WBB in ppg.
Leading in ppg off of turnovers.
Six players average double figures with a rotation that extends to 11-12 players with several playing close to 10mins less a game from their career averages.
They have made steady improvement as a team, players have improved their individual play, and the progress being made is exceptional during the non-conference schedule.
The fact there are a few casual fans trying to label a ranked 9-0 that has won 8 of 9 games by double figures averaging 90+ ppg unappealing is comical.

The two announcers last night talked about it late in the game. It’s a valid question whenever a new regime brings a significantly different style than the previous coach had (ex. beginning of Josh Heupel era). I’m definitely curious to see how the LVs do against UConn, LSU, SC. Losses won’t necessarily lower my optimism for the KC era but getting blown out and looking dysfunctional would raise concern.

I turned off the mens game for the same reason

pregame and practice layup lines are killing in-game layups bc they practice them at half speed and then miss themat full throttle,,,I hate traditional layup lines

I almost tuned out when Jillian blew an, uncontested break away lay-up. She put the ball up so high on the backboard; her "shot: never had a chance. The little painted square is there for a reason.....

Prob so😀. I have confessed in the past....If Lady Vols aren't playing in basketball, softball, soccer, etc (or one of my granddaughters).... I'm not watching. Last nights display reminded again WHY! And my own daughter served on Memphis Coach Joy Lee McNeils staff for 4 years....

It looks to me like a tiger-paw slash @GameTime

I think you are correct, Coach Jumper. I would add that there should be no way that a team be allowed to have uniforms the same blue as the floor. I’m sure that some advantage went to Memphis due to the colors meshing. I am old, but there were times on my big screen tv that I could not tell exactly where players were and were not. At any rate our Lady Vols overcame a subpar shooting performance to win.

there is an old adage "You play like you practice"
My teams use to ask for a layup line,,,but we did 3-2-1 instead bc it got their hearts beating and the pre-game drill was relevant to the game

I firmly believe that half-paced layup drills are the reason for missed layups (bunnies,,,not contested layups)

When my teams practiced layups they were full court BL to BL timed layups
ANd 1-dribble attack layups also timed

Imagine a race car driver practicing going 70 and then racing at 120+,,,same thing would happen

I agree,,,some of the floors are more of an artist's rendering than a competitive floor
Indiana fever's leads the pack
imagine wearing black and gray and playing on this floor

"Memphis definitely outplayed us today. They played harder than us. They had more of a sense of urgency. So we definitely have a lot to learn. And we have a quick turnaround before our next game so we have a lot to fix in a 24 hour period."

She is direct, thorough, and confident in her answers and preparation. She has a great relationship with her team and seems to be well aware of how to achieve the goals they’ve set.
Complements her outer beauty perfectly.
I’m thankful that she is the LV Head Coach and look forward to the season!

Having played basketball, albeit only church league, I will say that you don't notice the design on the court while you are playing as you are not looking down on it. From a TV audience standpoint, those blue uniforms disappeared looking down on the blue court; very annoying for sure.

So again it depends on the person. I think it’s an irrelevant question to be honest. They have won enough games by learning/playing this system under a new head coach to earn a ranking as a Top 20 team.
The players on her roster have starter experience in the ACC and SEC. They have played on teams including previous LV teams that perhaps were not as good as this current Lady Vol team that beat SEC schools.
Why wouldn’t the new system with really good talent work?
We’ll see when that time comes. I would say the odds are strong in their favor. Leading WBB in scoring, ppg off turnovers, steals, offensive rebounds, etc while as some have tried to label it unappealing and dysfunctional is comical.

The question will continue to be asked at least until the LVs win more conference games than not over the course of a full season. They can silence the questions by upsetting teams considered to have better rosters. KC welcomes the doubters - she's confident and the players have bought in!
