Caleb Williams QB Oklahoma in the Portal

Why would he do that? He's already brought in 2 5* and a 4* that you would have to think are better than a walk-on, but those guys are still on the bench and Stetson is still playing.

I don't think Georgia's looking for a transfer QB right now, but that could change depending on how many are expected to transfer out.

As for Stetson playing, it's always the same process everywhere; coaches play the guy who earns the job. Coach Heupel ended up starting the lowest rated QB on UT's roster this season, because when games are on the line coaches play the guy who is available to play and has earned the job.

Neither of UGA's two underclassmen were ready to start, just like Justin Fields wasn't ready to start in 2018. JT Daniels would have most likely won the job, but he apparently held himself out for the majority of the season. I don't know the details about that, but Stetson was available, played well, improved, and at some point his performance and experience with this year's team outweighed Daniels' likely trajectory with only a few games left.

And that doesn’t mean the other guys not ready or better. Coaches play it safe and who their comfortable with.
You’d be saying the same thing about Tua when Alabama was about to lose to UGA in the NC game if Saban hadn’t had enough sense to pull the guy he was comfortable with at the end and put the better QB in to win it!

It doesn't mean the other guy is ready or better either. Feeling safe and comfortable with a decision quite often equates to a better outcome than throwing caution to the wind. Some fans like to second guess based on minimal information, which means they're wrong more often than right. I personally didn't have an opinion about the advisability of playing Tua, because I didn't have nearly as much information as coach Saban had.

In 2020, lots of UT fans were upset that Pruitt/Chaney didn't give the QB job to highly rated freshman Harrison Bailey after JG began to struggle. I suspect Pruitt and Chaneyt understood that Bailey would struggle even more than JG, because he wasn't close to ready. That's supported by the fact that, in 2021, Coach Heupel gave sophomore Harrison Bailey very little playing time and apparently not enough hope for future playing time to stick around. Apparently neither of those coaching staffs felt safe or comfortable with Bailey, so they played somebody else.

Most players don't lose their position due to injury. Daniels had a muscle strain of some sort if I remember correctly. Are you saying the coaches wanted him to play and he elected not to do so or did he lose he starting job due to injury?

It's not that uncommon for players to lose their starting position after an injury. If another QB comes in and develops a better command of the offense and a good rapport with the receivers, then he might keep the job. If Daniels returned and wasn't back to form in practice, he wasn't likely to win his job back.

I don't know anything for a fact, but I read several times on UGA boards that Daniels was cleared at one point by UGA docs and then JT had his personal physician come in from CA and say he wasn't ready to play. He reportedly wasn't throwing in practice for a while. In one press conference Kirby did seem to indicate that it was Daniels' choice. Whatever happened, I haven't seen him looking disengaged. He's been talking to Stetson on the sideline and acting normally. His parents were at the Florida game and he hadn't started the previous 4 games. I guess he'll probably transfer and we'll never know the story, which is too bad because I think he's a very talented QB.

Probably a long shot but just saw this on ESPN. Guess he’s not buying the Venables hype train. How amazing would it be to have him take over after Hendon Hooker. I just highly doubt he’ll transfer anywhere he has to wait.

Plenty have lost their jobs due to injuries. Tom Brady would have likely never got in if not for an injury to Bledsoe.

That is the funny thing. Daniels started 3 of the first 4 games. Smart before the Arkansas game said Daniels status was how he felt in warm ups right before game time. This implies he was pretty much ready to go, however you are right we will probably never know.

No

[For an explanation, when all these big-time QBs started entering the portal late last year, the media listed Ole Miss as a possible destination for literally every one of them. So I started joking that every QB was transferring to Ole Miss.]

With Hooker entrenched, would he take the risk that he might not win the job here? Wouldn't he look for a little lower hanging fruit with a team losing it's starter? Not sure how good he is.

What's going on in OK? Rattler left and now Williams?
Kind of odd, you'd think Williams would stick around seeing how he was the likely starter and that Rattler had already left...

He's not going to look at TN
