i mean call me crazy but the entire college football world is in a cuban missle crisis lol. he needs to adress his "nation" and tell us what we are going to do to outdo those beach bums to the west.

and if i was a coach at tennessee i would release a press "telling my beloved menion that everything will be alright and whatever happens will make the sec conference better and will remain the top conference in the country. now excuse me i need to get back to signing some kids so we can beat alabama next year"

Thats the beauty of being the commisioner of the best conference in America. He doesn't have to say anything. Everyone is playing catch-up with him and the multi-billion dollar 15 year deal he inked with ESPN and CBS. Let the Pac-10 panic for relevance and the Big-10 clamor for dollars from their precious Big 10 Network. The fact is the SEC has the best product on the field, the best TV deal, the strongest conference, and doesn't have to do a thing! Its great to be in the SEC at this time in history! :dance2:

The Pac-10 may be playing catch up, and the Big 10 is pretty much doing the same. But this doesn't mean that Slive should just sit back and relax. That contract won't last forever, and even though we are the best conference now, IF the pac-16 does take place they will be a big draw for ESPN, CBS, ABC etc for the future. I wouldn't say Slive needs to jump now, but defenatly needs to be thinkng of something for the future. Personally i wouldn't mind seeing Kansas added if they are left out in the end, just because that would add a HUGE plus for the sec in b-ball terms.

But we are a football conference and the shakeup was sparked by trying to catch up with us in football. Why add a team like Kansas?

All this is sparked by football i get that, but we are a great football conference as it is, we could still add Kansas and bring strength to the conference where we are weak and that's basketball. If we did add Kansas we could still go after or accept a very talented football school (VT, GT, Mami, rumors of OU, etc etc) to offset that as well.... this is just my opinion. But you can't say that it wouldn't be nice bringing a b-ball powerhouse like Kansas into the SEC.

I agree. It is crazy right now. Football fans are so on edge that they cannot figure out the correct forum to start non-UT Football threads in. Common Slive help us out.

Kansas is garbage(football)...we don't need them....I say add GT, VT, FSU and UNC(though I think it almost impossible UNC would come to the SEC)

yeah i think that we def need to ass flordia state ( that would weeken flordia) hell WV might not be be bad or VT. i mean its kind of crazy haveing a "southern conference" and not have a virginian team. maybe even adding the university of virginia. i mean that are not great at football but if that joined the sec they could be, and it would help us with our academic stuff...

Is he doing anything with this expansion talk. I think most people want Texas in the SEC, but Slive has given no indication of doing anything right now. all the good teams will be gone sooner rather than later, so shouldn't we jump on some schools here soon.

Say what you will, but financially speaking, he has done good things for the SEC. Its not really his style to run out and play his cards too early.

He really does not need to say anything. It is foolish to think that the SEC has not had extensive talks and develop some sort of contingency plan. Missouri played its hand way to early and its biting them is the arse right now.

Texas in not coming to the SEC. Why go out and try to publicly go after them when they want no part? While we want A&M, our silence is making it look like A&M is the one doing the chasing. As far as the other schools that we may add, nobody else is chasing them right now, so why rush? Play your cards to early and you might miss a bigger fish.

We would never want UVA. Their commitment to football makes Vandy look like Bama. Half the ACC wants to kick them out. They really should join the Ivy League.

Here's the thing: Are you adding schools because they have good football programs or because they enhance the SEC's geographic and TV reach. Kansas may not be great in football--but K. City is a big market and Kansas could be decent in football. And while football is king, basketball ain't exactly chopped liver and kansas is a basketball power. They would enhance SEC basketball a ton. Va. Tech is good in football but doesn't add much from a TV or marketing perspective at all. It's a boring school--and the hokies don't bring the DC market. Clemson is the same. They and Va.Tech are a pretty good in terms of football teams--but in terms of TV markets and reach, they add very little. I'd love to see the SEC, if it needs to expand, get texas a&m, kansas, fsu and somebody else. If I were slive, I would have gone after missouri too--but sounds like they are big 10 bound.

Apparently you missed the part where Mizzou basically got down on its knees for the Big 10 only to have them not return Mizzou's phone call the next day, all the while hooking up with its sister Nebraska.

The only way the Big 10 comes back to Mizzou is if it does not get ND, Rutgers, MAryland.....Those schools give them a vastly superior market than St. Louis.

i posted this elsewhere, but i found this yesterday about possibly out stance

The seeds of conference expansion are everywhere in college athletics.

Make that everywhere but the SEC.

The landscape in college athletics is poised to change as we know it. Nebraska could be on its way to the Big Ten by the end of this week. The Pac-10 is ready to take just about everybody else out of the Big 12, and the Big East could also be on the verge of losing a team or two to the Big Ten.

Meanwhile, the SEC sits, waits and watches.

And in doing so, there’s a sense of contentment among SEC commissioner Mike Slive and the league presidents and athletic directors.

The general consensus last week at the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla., was that the league liked its current lineup and wasn’t going to be in the business of raiding other conferences just for the sake of adding more schools.

The phrase that Slive keeps repeating is “strategic and thoughtful” as it relates to the SEC’s stance on expansion.

In other words, if there’s a chance to go get Texas or even Oklahoma if the Big 12 indeed starts to crumble, then the SEC would almost certainly make a pitch.

But the majority of the presidents, athletic directors and football coaches in the SEC are in favor of keeping the league right where it is with 12 schools -- regardless of what the Big Ten or Pac-10 does.

Still, that doesn’t mean the SEC wouldn’t be opportunistic.

Broadening the league’s borders would be favorable to some in the league, which would bring in new markets, create new recruiting territories and introduce SEC football to a brand new collection of fans.

The two schools that would probably fit that description best are Texas and Virginia Tech, two traditionally strong football schools and two entirely new markets to the SEC.

Ultimately though, the SEC will probably look the same way in 2012 as it does now.

Mike Slive here...I appreciate your concerns. As you well know the SEC IS the Power House of college football. What we are not is a Power House in college basketball. Adding Duke and UNC to our regular season schedule would be a cash windfall, not to mention the academic integrity of our conference.

when you are still in the game.

If Slive runs around and tells everyone he wants schools X, Y, and Z... and they go elsewhere, then we end up looking like jackasses and everyone wonders how Slive screwed this one up.

He is playing it close to the vest, and I have no problem with that.
