Umm, no. Johnny Majors punted on third down. I'm saying, it's better to run up the middle than it is to punt on third down and give up.

Also, the MYTH that "running up the middle" has at the University of Tennessee is one I laugh at everytime I'm in the stadium and some Diamond in the Rough Head Coach is sitting near me talking about how stupid "running up the middle" is.

Tennessee's offensive system is built on running between the tackles. By doing so successfully you wear down your opponent and set them up for big pass plays and also the long touchdown runs that Coker had this season. I always love hearing people that know very little about what it takes to coach a college football team expound on how foolish running up the middle is, only to see them get excited when Tennessee picks up a first down or touchdown on a play action fake that was set up by the very "run up the middle" they were cussing about, two plays earlier.

I see your point, but I have my own problems with "Johnny ball" or whatever yall want to call it. Just because Majors did some stupid things, doesn't give the current guys a pass to do "slightly less stupid" things.

Tell me OS, what exactly are we "setting up" when we run up the middle on third and long? Because really what it boils down to is if we are going to run straight up the middle in this situation, we might as well just have punted it on third down anyway! I guess those three yards we gained are worth it.

I don't have a problem with running up the middle EVER. Except in situations like that.

A draw play is a perfectly legitimate playcall on 3rd and long.

Have you ever see someone break a long run? I'll tell you one thing I know about this situation. Dropping back to throw and attempting a pass when the defense "knows" you are going to drop back and attempt a pass, is a LOT more dangerous than running a draw play, where in, the defense comes after you THINKING you are going to pass, and the delayed handoff gives the back a chance to make some yards if he can get past the blitzing linebackers. There are MUCH less fumbles in that situation than there are INT's, clock stopages which hurt game flow and T.O.P. or huge sacks affecting field position.

80% of the time?

That just makes the 20% of the time you don't run it that much better. Actually, I think the WR screen passes we used to try so often on third down are a pretty good call, but we simply cannot execute that play for some reason. Georgia does it very well. They've done it to us a few times on third and long and managed to convert.

80% of the time?

Thank you. That is the problem. We want to pull the old Walter Payton sneak attack on third and long occasionally, fine. Instead of running it every time, why don't we just take a stab at letting Meachem outrun his defender(s). If that doesn't work, dump off to the running back or hit Cottam and hope they can't make someone miss. That draw play might work OCCASIONALLY if it wasn't so darn predictable.

I guarantee you that we don't run Draw plays on 3rd and 10 anywhere close to as often as some people think.

You could be right. Wish I had the time/energy to count them all from this season. When we were 3rd and 10+, what was our play selection? Any guesses?

I don't know either, but I bet we didn't run more than maybe 5-10 Draw plays all year on 3rd and 10+ when we were outside our own 35 yard line.

I dont see the big deal about Cutcliffe. Sure he has some great plays, but he also has made some bad ones. Some that have hurt our chances of being in a better position. I dont think we would have ever saw crompton if it wasn't for bad play calling...

Well if he does go, we could always bring back Saunders or Harris. Both could be available! Or Fulmer could take over play calling then we would have room for a ST coach!

I would like to at least remind everyone that when Majors called the quick kick on 3rd down one time, Andy Kelly pooched one that rolled about 90 yards. It was a huge shift in field position that was thought by many to be a throwback.... but also a brilliant call.

I would agree this year, but the last few years you could almost here the stadium say "draw play" in unison before the ball was snapped.

Crappy QB and Receiver play will do that.

Word is that Sanders is going to be the new head coach at Tennessee Tech next year.
