Calm Down People

I've seen UT play really well at points in the season already. However, there are no excuses for the way they played the second half yesterday. That was a pitiful display of basketball.

People got excited when this team kept it close with ranked opponents. This team just isn't going to be very good this year. It was picked to finish 11th in the SEC for a reason

I'd rather get real wins over cupcake teams like Austin Peay than get moral victories for "keeping it close" with Duke and Memphis.

If the team is not playing defense and rebounding well as well as being disciplined that is on the coaching staff. That is what was promised before all else when he was hired. That means you only play guys that are willing to do that, right? That is not what is happening. It is still Pearl Disease of playing too many guys - the least of which got 6 minutes. #'s 8 and 9 in PT got 9 minutes each. Same junk every game. The shooting percentage differences between the teams was not enough to matter and we got far more rebounds. So why did we lose? They were better on both ends of the floor. Rebounds are great on offense if you can score after you rebound it. We don't. We turn it over or shoot a wild 3. The stats that mattered in this game were we played 10 mediocre players (again), we turned it over twice as much as them, and we fouled over twice as much as they did - granted some of them were at the end.

Shorten the bench and give more minutes (35 to Golden - you have got to be kidding?!) to players other than Golden that will play disciplined basketball. You can only afford one better scorer that is weak in defense on the floor at one time. McRae is the one guy that can create offense that is weak on D. Maymon is the threat around the basket. Design the offense around those two guys. Tell Golden if he ever jacks another 3 he will sit. His job is to secure the ball and get the rest of the team active on offense, as well as to shut the opposing team's PG down on defense. He cannot do that jacking 3's and driving under the basket the rest of the time. Shorten the bench to 8 unless there is foul trouble. And for goodness sake - start practicing and learning how to play a good zone defense for 10 minutes a game. When you are outmanned you cannot stay in man D.

If one watches games and listens to the commentators
during the games, I am sure that you could learn a great deal about basketball through the years.

That leads to an interesting project. I think we should find a kid and only let him listen to Bob Kesling call basketball games on the radio. Then, when he gets older, let's let him watch a game and see if he can understand wtf is happening on the court.

Relax indeed guys...we could be like Memphis and LOADED with talent and still play like we have no clue of basketball IQ....Now those fans are frustrated....

First, let me say I have been watching UT BB for over 40 years and I have seen some really bad teams. At the same time, I have seen some great teams going back to Ernie and Bernie. With that said, I think fans need to take a step back and just relax this year. THis team lost 75% of it's scoring and rebounding from last season, is learning how to play under a new coach, and was picked to finish 11th in the SEC. So far, I would say they are on par with realistic expectations. Remember, with Hopson and Harris, they lost by alot more points to Charleston last season (at home no doubt) and also lost to Oakland (at home). Let's give Cuonzo a chance to implement his coaching on these players before we start jumping ship. He has proven he can build a program based on his record at Mizz. St. Mizz. State was 11-20 in CCM's first year there as he had to straighten out the players from the habits of the previous regime. 24-12 his 2nd year, and 26-9 last year. GIve the man some time and in the meantime, support YOUR TEAM!

I agree with your post, for the most part. The thing is, i'm tired of waiting. I've been waiting for the football team for several years running and now I have to wait on the basketball team. Thank God that he has provided me with an athletic son to help me get my sports' fix now. It helps me be somewhat patient as I wait for my Vols in football and basketball to become respectable again.

If you have never played and been coached by someone respectable, then you can listen and watch all you want and you will still be lacking in understanding the game.

Well stated, and I agree, except for the 40 years part. :) At any rate, this team has lost a lot of ability, and isn't left with much. We've got a long way to go, time to just be patient and deal with it.

Sad part is, no matter how much rationality you inject into your thoughts, there will still be those who refuse to see the forest for the trees.

What does trees have to do with the forest? :)

I agree but there has been two games I think we should of won. Oakland and Pitt.... Other than that I have seen some positive signs. Good penetration, good ball movement and a decent outside game when Skylar does get too confident. I see a few wins coming up. At least I hope, I have only been able to see 3 of our games because we are not popular over here. All have been losses. Not a great start to my first season as a Vols B ball fan.

Go Vols!!!!
