From a Cal reporter's blog:
Coach Tedford believes in 'business trips" where he flies in as late as possible on Friday. He is keeping the team on West Coast Time and therefore has a wakeup call around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The team always practices beginning at 4 p.m. and Saturday's game will begin at 2:30 p.m. West Coast Time, so that won't be much of a change. Jay

I think that is a HUGE mistake for Cal. I would want to get here on Thursday and get them used to the time change, and let them rest from the flight.

Good point, also what will the temperature and humidity be in Knoxville at game time?

I agree. Those kids are going to be comatose when they get up Saturday morning.

Looks like 77 degrees with a MAX humidity of 79%.

It says at 6pm, it will be 77 and feel like 80. Shouldn't be too much of an advantage for us. :/

Maybe some cramping due to the humidity and it being the first game, but probably minimal effect.

I disagree. The game is in the middle of the afternoon. There is no reason that they need to be on East Coast time to play a game that starts 1.5 hours earlier than they are already used to practicing every day. If they were planning to fly in to Knoxville the morning of the game, then I would agree that would be stupid. A five hour flight can really suck the energy out of a lot of people. However, with a night's rest, they should be fine.

The bigger issue for Cal, in my opinion, is that they're not going to be used to the high heat and humidity. However, there's really nothing that they can do to solve that problem. Having read the last couple of posts that were made as I typed this post, I don't think that 77 degrees will be hot enough for UT to gain an advantage from the weather.

In related news, Jeff Tedford says he is not worried about high humidity or temperatures. "We simulate 80 degree weather everyday in practice, it shouldn't be a big deal," Tedford said. Tedford and staff have been practicing with loudspeakers that push out hotter temperatures instead of simulations of 107,000 screaming fans.

I disagree with you. That cross country flight, getting in late and going to bed does have an affect on you. Or maybe it's just me.

No man. I meant it's usually 10 to 15 degrees hotter on the field.

I know I know. What I'm saying is that wherever this game is being played, it will be 10-15 degrees hotter on the field, so thats not a homefield type thing. Knoxville's humidity is typically higher ... oh nevermind! :zeitung_lesen:

I guess it depends on how much you're used to traveling. A 3-hour time zone change doesn't even phase me.

Not sure these kids are used to that type of flight.

I mean think about it, a lot of these kids have probably never even been this far east.

It's just not the way I would handle it.

Cal played a game at Southern Miss in 2004. And other than that... Any of the kids on the team that happened to be more priveleged ones, they've been out east. I gurantee it.

A year or so ago,I was staying in a motel by Tyson McGhee Airport (sp)in Maryville, when I witnessed on game day morning, UNLV traveling from the airport on buses.I figured they had just arrived in town the same day.Maybe not. They were escorted to Neyland in a hurried fashion it seemed.About 4 hours prior to kick off.I know smaller schools don't have a huge travel budget though.

I hate people like you. I bet you don't get a hangover either. I have a buddy that is the same.

Hangovers? Yes. I get those. I'm not sure how old you are, but once you pass about the age of 27, they get worse too.

I've always traveled alot, so I usually don't get bad jetlag. The key to avoiding jetlag is to learn how to time your sleep. I went to Melbourne, Australia several years ago. That was a 16.5 hour time zone change from Phoenix, Arizona, where I live. I was the only person on that trip that didn't have severe jetlag.

I was about to make a similar post, but decided to wait. In general, I find that people out West tend to travel a lot more than people in the South.

Yeah. I don't get jetlag either, really. Mainly because of my ability to fall asleep at will. Just give me a horizontal surface. It knocks my sleeping habits back in order in about a day.

Meaning they've also experienced the humidity. I used to experience it every summer with a trip to the Miami valley of Ohio, about 100+ degrees outside and air you could eat. I've also been to Disneyworld in early August. That was thick.

Maybe they can handle the travel well, but my question is why would you not come in a day earlier or at least early on Friday and just eliminate jet lag from the equation?
