Can Bruce Pearl bring UT basketball a national title?

Lofton, let's just wait and enjoy mhf explain to us that it's a sign of a great recruiter when one player of five man class was left in four years.

If you're going to blame Pearl for the ones that didn't work out then we need to go back and remove the great recruiter tag from Williams, Coach K., Self, Knight and others for all the busts they've had over the years. After all they haven't won national titles every year.:frown:

Yea cause pearl's definitely on the same level as coach k except that he just has 11 more final fours than pearl.

Tell me one recruit he brought here that has lived up to the billing that wasn't named Wayne Chism...

Brian Williams, in fact, he has exceeded his billing coming in. Tyler Smith, Prince, and possibly Maze lived up to their billing. Most players have shown improvement each year. Just because Hopson hasn't lived up to his billing, don't act as if no one has.

The "Big names" haven't. Even though I think we've only had 1 5 star recruit. Prince was a 5 star out of high school but didn't play nearly to a 5 star level until this year

Those guys didn't. Especially Tyler's senior year. Remember how villified Prince was his junior year?

Prince was villified without basis. Tyler did not do as well as the team leader his senior year, but his talent was clearly still present. Williams has exceeded anyone's expectations. Maze was about what we thought we were getting.

I am in agreement with BVF.

Goins I think should have a good year which means he will have surpassed expectations.

JP Prince was a coma and washing out totally from Arizona away from being a 5 star so saddling him with that burden is completely absurd.

Brian Williams surpassed expectations.

From all accounts Negedu was on his way prior to a freak heart attack. I actually think in New Mexico he will do quite well.

Maze was everything we thought he could be, maybe a little better.

Pearl's worst miss was Jurick and there was lots of pressure to take the local highly rated guy who wanted to come.

Ramar Smith could not stop selling drugs and shooting people for long enough to develop his considerable basketball talent. I understand the criticism of Pearl for taking him despite his reputation, but I think it must be tempered by the knowledge that Pearl had offered so many of the other available PGs and they passed.

What was expected of Hopson? If he averages 18 ppg this year and 22 next year will he be viewed as a bust?
I do not think anyone can conclude whether or not he was a solid recruit until he is done.

The same can be said for Renaldo Woolridge.

Tobias Harris and to a lesser extent Trae Golden look more physically ready to excel than many recent highly rated freshman we have had.

I look for Kenny Hall to live up to every bit of his billing coming to UT.

The main bottom line is that Pearl started out in a bad situation in many respects recruiting wise. He has managed to excel and 3 years from now it seems likely that Bruce Pearl will have brought in 3 of the top 5 classes all time to our program. If that does not make you a great recruiter in the eyes of some fans, those fans need to accept their hater label.

What improvement did Tyler Smith show over the course of his career at Tennessee? How much better was Ramar Smith as a sophomore than he was as a freshman?

Duke Crews was 5* on rivals, but was clearly overrated.

The main flaw Pearl has had is recruiting the PG position.

Ramar is a criminal and his own unique case.
Marques Johnson was terrible @ UT and NC St.
Daniel West never made it.

Hopefully with Trae Golden the high school trend turns around for the PG position. You can't keep plugging leaks with JC players.

Tyler Smith was no better his last year than his first year. His shot, if anything, had gotten worse. Ramar regressed his second year. Prince was very solid this past year but was disappointing the prior year. Scotty Hopson has most definitely been disappointing. Woolridge is a joke and hasn't progressed at all. Chism is the one player that really progressed under Pearl.

Pearl has improved the talent without question. Is he an "elite recruiter?" I don't think so.

I agree with your player progressions, or regressions in most cases.

I would say that Pearl is a dynamic person, but certainly no elite recruiter. However, who is? I mean to say, college basketball recruiting is so much more about getting players to that next level, which is much more a function of exposure than actual recruiting talent. This isn't football where that home visit means a lot, or at least it doesn't appear to.

Players will always go to UNC, Duke, Kansas, UK, and the likes, because look at the players that have come out of those programs. I could probably talk a kid into going to UNC. Until, if ever, UT gets the national, and NBA exposure, we'll still be getting the Hopsons of the world instead of the John Walls.

It depends on the coach. Tubby sure didn't burn it up in recruiting at UK.
