Can the vols run? Can the vols stop Rice?

After the 2004 game I really wasnt feeling too well. I knew that we had problems so I was hopeful but im always realistic.

UPDATE its 2006 and Spurrier is our coach.

You're the one focusing on anything but 2006. 2005 is loooooooong gone, and this Tennessee team is probably its 2nd best of this decade ... maybe the best.

Only two teams have "shut-down" the UTK running attack and both were playing 8 men in the box. UTK is not a dominant running team, but they are solid. And, solid is plenty good enough to run the ball against the SEC's second WORST defense against the run. 2nd worst in a conference that includes Miss State, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt....ouch!

Rice is a very solid reciever, but not a gamebreaker. He doesnt have the speed to be able to win this game by himself. He will most likely have some catches but he will not do too much to effect the outcome of this game. USC will not be able to run at all.

Sounds like theres a negative correlaton between the Cocks (ha ha) run & pass defense.

I love how arrogant the SC fans are about their team considering they havent beaten a team with a winning record all year.
GAMECOCK doesn't sound arrogant to me. Actually comes off as friendly and only wanting to discuss our upcoming game with the Cocks. But to answer your question cockie, I believe we can run on y'all and can cover Rice, even without Inky. But our strong suit is throwing the ball which begs the question, can y'all cover Meach and Co.?????

Of all the adjectives I could come up with to describe you, realistic is probably the last one I would use.

I look for us to use a lot of zone blitz this week.
Do you? UT will go four wide shot-gun... and see if your d-linemen can run with UT's WR's underneath.
Can Ainge find the right guy quick enough?
Yes.
Can he get away from the preasure?
The only defense that has put consistent pressure on Ainge this year was UF prior to the switch at center. USC's d line is not in that class. Bama, Cal, and UGA didn't get to him. I'd be surprised if USC made a habit of it.

Your secondary hasn't seen a passing attack close to that of UT. UT hasn't run the ball well and are still searching for something that will work consistently. To be honest though, that search has been somewhat slowed by the fact that UT throws it so effectively.

UT is averaging over 9 yards per pass play, not per completion but per attempt. When you throw that well... how much sense does it make to run it even if you are averaging 5 yards per play? UT doesn't want to slow the game down. Seven points is a very good trade for 5 extra minutes of clock.
S. Newton can.
Maybe. But can he throw it deep enough to scare the Vols out of cover 1? Can he throw the deep out well enough to keep them from playing inside technique on your WR's? The Vols will probably push everything to the middle of the field where the best LB's you'll face this year will be waiting.
I think that youll have some respect for Syvelle after this game wether we win or not.
I have respect for him right now. He's made an offense that was down right horrible look respectable now.

He doesn't scare anyone with his arm but he isn't a joke throwing the ball either. He does scare you scrambling which is why I look for the Vols to dare him to throw it deep or to the deep outs/flags.

OK, i live in Columbia. I see local news on Rice, Newton, etc. Dont say anything bout Sydney bein doubled covered. Meach has too. He gets his. And Sydney obviously hasnt had a great, sure he has 5 TD's but every single one came against Florida Atlantic or some team like that. Sydney will get his catches Saturday, but not his yards or Td's.

Tennessee certainly shut down DeShawn Jackson and DJ Hall although going over 100 yards, did not kill us. I really think the Vols will look to go to the run first which will set up the pass.

sidney is still making great catches, but to me it doesnt seem like hes going after the ball as hard as he was last year. #2 rec. mckinley has really stepped up since the auburn game and has made some great catches this year also, giving sidney a run for his money on the highlight reel. should be agood matchup between the recievers for sc and dbs for tenn. saturday, from the stuff ive been seeing.

The secondaries of Vanderbilt and Kentucky have nothing on Tennessee's secondary.

I wouldnt worry as much about Ainge saturday as I would Foster. He will breakout. Count on It.

Has SC even beat a team w/ a winning record???
sounds alot like the talk we heard before UGA if you ask me.
The VOLS still are not getting respect we'll see after saturday.

I'm no offensive genius by any means (unless you count NCAA 2007) but I think it is best for the Vols to stick to the offense that has worked all year, throwing the ball. I know USC has a bad run defense, but I still hope we throw first run second. Why change it.

I don't know, maybe I have seen teams try to change the plan for one game to the other team's weakness and it blows up in their face.

And remember, 40 something of those yds were on a BS call when JPW threw up a prayer and Hall and Hefney both came down with it but they gave the catch to Hall.

Hefney never had it, it was more like Hall went up and came down with Hefney's head and the ball. Hall caught the ball on the back of Hefney's helmet, so Hefney's head was between Hall's chest and the ball, but Hall was holding onto the ball. Strange catch that probably shouldn't have happened, but it did.

I couldn't tell from the stands, but thats sure as hell what it looked like. And when they showed it the following day, it looked the same.

Morely was actually the first player to take the ball out of Hall's hands when they were all on the ground and I think Hefney took it from Morely. That play was a mess.

Hall had the catch. Was in his hands just like OWB wrote. Just like Prothro (sp?0 last year but not as spectacular. Hefney grabbed it after they were down.
