Assault-style weapons are banned in Canada effective immediately, the country's prime minister said Friday.

The move comes less than two weeks after Canada's deadliest rampage in modern history, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 22 people after a 12-hour reign of terror.

"You don't need an AR-15 to bring down a deer," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a news conference in Ottawa. "So, effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military-grade assault weapons in this country."

Police said the gunman had several semi-automatic handguns and at least two semi-automatic rifles, one of which was described by witnesses as a military-style assault weapon.

"These weapons were designed for one purpose, and one purpose only, to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada," Trudeau said.

The ban is effective immediately but disposal of the weapons will be subject to a two-year amnesty period. Trudeau said some form of compensation would also be put in place but the firearms can also be exported and sold after a proper export license is obtained.

Trudeau said that "thoughts and prayers" for mass shooting victims were no longer enough and that's why his government acted.

New Zealand last year, Canada this year.

Looking forward to the day we do the same here. It's only a matter of time.

They won’t even tell the public what kind of rifles were used . No that’s not hinky at all . Lol

There’s nothing like adding another law to stop criminals from not obeying the law . Liberal idiots .

I can see no logical reason, other than agenda, that could possibly explain the recalcitrance in revealing the weapons used.

The "need an AR-15 to bring down a deer" argument is so intellectually bankrupt it's embarrassing to hear from anyone, let alone a high ranking official.

I am just going to go ahead and say it. Semi automatic rifles in the military are pretty much reserved for sniper rifles. I doubt that is what they are referring to here. So I really want o know what they mean by "military style".

Or which weapons were actually used. One wonders if the guy only killed with the pistols. Like the guy in Vegas, just because you have an arsenal doesnt mean you can physically use the arsenal.

I'm guessing "style" is to read as "close enough for our political purpose".

I'm pretty sure that the M4 and M16 are both semi-automatic rifles that have a single shot semi-automatic mode and a 3 round automatic mode. I don't know what they use for sniper rifles, but I thought they were mostly bolt action. I'm no expert for sure though, but I can ask my arms dealer brother and he can tell me for certain.

I thought they had all three?

Just checked the m16 is automatic.
And the m4 has variants that are just 3 round with semi, and a variant that is full auto.

Pretty sure you need special allowances to even get a burst fire weapon as a civie.

From MontyP's link: bold by me.
The RCMP would not elaborate on the nature of the investigation in the US. But last week, police said they believe Wortman acquired at least some of his weapons in the US.
Investigators said the gunman had several semi-automatic handguns and at least two semi-automatic rifles, one of which witnesses described as a military-style assault weapon.

Weak sauce.

Meh there’s apparently only two kinds now with the politicians and media saturation the public language on it . It’s either a military style or a weapon of war . That was zeps boi Pete’s favorite term I believe .

Did he just up and change Canadian Law on his own? Or is this something akin to an Executive Order here?

I wonder what keeps the next guy coming in from reversing this. Same for New Zealand.

Once relinquished people are never given their rights back.
I guess it would depend on the mechanism.

If the right has simply been “suspended” via something like an executive order, it can be reversed.

I have a hard time believing the Canadian PM can just change the law on his own. Even for Canada... that’s just crazy.

He did it without Parliament. Admittedly, I have no idea what that means in Canada.

But I definitely wondered if he was acting unilaterally, sounds like he was.

Trudeau was able to institute the ban of 1,500 makes and models of “military-style” weapons without Parliament’s approval. Under the order, owners of current assault-style weapons will receive a two-year amnesty period.
