I'm in south Florida right now, just a few miles from Miami. We had a chance the other day to have a free day before my wife's surgery, and drove through to a park just below Miami. Nothing to do with the op, but traffic is horrible 🤣.
Miami traffic is an absolute nightmare. There is never an hour that is not rush hour.

Thank you. It was pretty major, but everything went better than they expected!
If ya'll are still down there, and love fruit and stuff, and have spare time for a runabout....If you go south down to Homestead/Florida City (southern suburb) and hit the highway west to head to an entrance to the Glades, you will come to an intersection to turn south toward the entrance. At that intersection is a roadside stand ( a pretty large one) that has every fruit you could imagine. And tropical smoothies. shakes, etc. Maybe even a food counter. Can't recall on that one. But, it is a very interesting place to stop and visit. You will be driving past Ag fields that a single field could be 10 plus miles long and 4 miles wide. Place is called Robert Is Here. WEst of florida City going out of town. Your also maybe an hour or so by Miami driving time to get into the off-mainland portion of the Keys. Key Largo wold be the first. Good local seafood dives. Not terribly further to hit Islamorada. Just a couple of adventures I did when working some jobs there a few years ago just to say I did. South Beach has some good scenery if the wife is not along for busting you when you look at the scenery. Beach is definetly international for the women. It is a strange beach though. miami specifically does not have natural sand beaches. It's all dumped in, so when wading in the surf you can feel the hard pan under thin layers of sand. But, you can stand there and watch Rays pass back and forth almost at arms reach.

Just skip Miami altogether and do a day trip to Card Sound and Key Largo.

South Beach is overrated unless you’re 20 years old and enjoy sitting in bumper to bumper traffic just so you can see a couple girls walking around in thong bikinis.

Most overrated cities in the United States:

1 - Los Angeles
2 - NYC
3 - Miami

True. But thongs are everywhere. We're talking boobies!! lol. I agree. It was a let down. All the talk about the SB strip and the Art Deco, and the beach. Way overrated. But, once you cross the first bridge onto Key Largo, it's like a whole nuther mood.

Yep…once you pass by the Anchorage Resort in Key Largo, you may as well be on another planet.

Well, it dang sure slowed down a bit to be that close to the mainland. But, from FL City to the bridge is a desolate run of swampland anyway to make the transition.

Unless you fly over S-FL or drive it, you don't really get the full ride of why S-FL and FL in general seems so populated. S-FL is like a sardine can. I'd say 70% of the bottom third of the state is 95% uninhabited by permanent residents.

And it almost seems like a 5 foot wave could go from the gulf to the Atlantic. Miami's flooding is not as bad as NOLA, but they don't have the infrstructure to handle it. It's piitiful. A heavy rain and you're driving in curb deep water, or wlaking ankle deep on the sidewalk.

Yeah the first 15-20 miles of that Florida City to Key Largo stretch can be painful depending on the time of day. We usually leave Orlando EARLY to beat Miami rush hour traffic…I’m talking before the ass crack of dawn early.

Yeah if you miss that window, that one laner headed south is brutal. IIRC, there is a funny jog in the hwy somewhere closer to the crossover. Plus the concrete walls and fences to keep the swamp life off the hwy. It's not a pretty drive because of that. We were fortunate. Supposed to pull nights overseeing the trades jobs, and nothing was ready for like 3 days. So, we got to step out and fill our time during "non-traffic" hours. Only bad part was my helper. He was mental or missed his meds or something. He'd hang out the window banging the side of the truck calling for crocs and gators. We went in that SE entrance to the glades after you turn left at that fruit market and drove down to that abandoned looking resort. tried getting out in the park and exploring a bit, but the flying insects were murderous. Soon as you leave the blacktop and get on the trail, your legs and arms would literally be solid black. Looked at a map earlier, and didn't realize that rundown resort was all the way down to hte tip. Didn't seem like we drove that far.

Go ahead LW, rub it in. ;)

I'm hoping to make my first visit to the Keys sometime in 2023 (the sooner, the better)
If you drive, you will have to navigate Miami. And driving in Miami is not like any other US city. The bypass you'd likely be on skirts down the west side near the swamps, about 18 miles out?? And everything east of it is mind numbing congested. And the major roads are always under expansion. Horrible. But, the road layouts in Miami are easy to figure out, once you get a gip on the labelling. There will be two roads of the same number. One may be Ave. One may be either ST or RD. One runs N_S. THe other E_W.

Good info.

Heading south on the Turnpike from Orlando we take the Sawgrass Expressway at Exit 71 to bypass Ft Lauderdale and Miami, then pick up the Turnpike again just outside of Miramar.

That final stretch on the Turnpike to Florida City can be downright scary. There is no fast lane or slow lane, it’s every man for themselves. For every lead foot doing 90 in the right lane there’s someone’s nana doing 60 in the left lane.

My wife and I always do a deep exhale and high five when we get to Florida City.

lol. Sounds about right. My first trip Was with the job salesman. He drove with both feet and "popped" the brakes. I was a wreck. 2nd trip I drove non-stop from Nashville to Miami and navigated myself. Only inicident was trying to fit an F250 4 door long bed thru the Taco Bell drive-thru accross from the hospital we were working. The concret and steel pole won. Took me a minute to get out without further damage. Otherwise, I adopted the pass me ******* I ain't going no faster driving technique. worked out well.

I'm home, but she's still there in the hospital, but that was the plan all along for recovery. God willing, I'll go back Friday to get her, but won't have much time for doing anything this time, other than driving through alligator alley. We have to go back in October, going to be down in the area for a week, and she's gotta do a follow-up. We're probably staying on the gulf side, but may run around some that week.

Oh yeah, we did see a woman change her bikini top on the beach we went to. It was outside of Miami, Bill Bragg's park I think. Little different than what we're used to 🤣. I sincerely turned my head, had I not, I'd be in the hospital with my wife 🤣

I didn't do Gator Alley when we drove down for work. Typically some of us would fly to jobs like that, but I had to take a crew member and leave a work truck. I flew home. I stayed on free roads, so I crossed over some where south of Orlando and came out above Ft Lauderdale. I always heard Naples was nice, and ritzy, but didn't get the chance. Been in Tampa once, but must have been in wrong area.

Naples was amazing, loved it. We found a beach called clam pass, definitely want to go back there.

Miami, the city, Dolphins and the U need a new stadium to stay in the game literally. The metro is booming, Hard Rock, while greatly improved, was/is a poor design originally and substandard to everything being built now. They will get a new stadium sooner than later. It won’t be 65k, it will be 72+ because that’s what the NFL prefers.

Anybody watch the FSU game today? Stadium looked about 50% of capacity. Sad. :p

To be fair, the weather was AWFUL and it had been on a lightning delay for a while--the crowd outside was pretty good but with the bad weather a lot of people never made it to their seats. Had the weather been nice I expect it would have been closer to 80%--still not great, but not mad a mid-range ACC that historically has not had a good turnout during down years.
