When I first saw Kerry Wood, I felt his mechanics were such that an injury was inevitable.

I agree. It didn't take a trained eye to see that he was putting an awful amount of stress on his sholder and elbow snapping off that nasty curveball that he had. I think the day he struck out 20 and threw 130+ pitches effectively ruined him.

He had Rob Dibble quality mechanics.

Dusty Baker probably ruined Prior's career. There's plenty of evidence that excessively high pitch counts are especially dangerous for young pitchers, and Baker has been the single manager in recent years most likely to let his starters work way up in into the 115, 120+ range. I don't have Prior's pitch counts from 2003 in front of me, but Prior was a 22-year-old phenom working for the most pitcher-abusive manager around. It's not surprising that he's had arm trouble ever since.
