You are correct that the number was closer to 65 than 85. The thing people have to remember is even if people don't show up, they still may have bought tickets as I did. I just chose to be part of the group who sat this one out. They did lose out on the money I would have spent while at the game, but the cost of the tickets was paid for long ago.

Remember we paid Troy 800,000.00 for coming to Neyland and playing us this weekend. That's a pretty good chunk of change when 38,000 people don't show up to fill the place.

I didn't even know they took cards? I thought it was always cash only.

I sure as heck wouldn't deal with credit cards or debit cards at concession stands if it were up to me.

Understood. But that's not the point I was responding to. It was insinuated that UT lost money today. I disagree. They simply did not make as much.

Didn't say they did. They just didn't maximize their profit potential. A few years ago the stadium would have had around 100,000 for homecoming, lots of kids spending money for expensive cokes, hot dogs, hats, pennants, etc.

Same here VG. No different than going to a county fair, flea market, what have you, cash is still king. If folks don't have time to whip by an ATM, then it's on them.

Think of the large margins that UT makes off of concessions. Losing 3 percent versus an 80% margin (guessing) is chump change. I know that they would have done the necessary research to know that turning away one customer will result in a huge loss compared to that 3%. I would imagine it is a different reason and like others have said, I don't remember them ever taking cards either.

I think we are only getting part of the story here. I think the OP is actually Derek Dooley. He tried to buy a couple cokes and a hotdog with his credit card for the family. Of course they said his credit was no longer good at UT. Cash Only.

True but there's more than just the price of a ticket involved. Doubt anyone has the true "cost" of 70K at a game vs 105K, but when it's time to pay the bills, the bean counters will feel the pinch. When 30% of your stadium is vacant, it's a big problem.

Yeah I agree several years ago I heard on sports talk the average fan spends $14.00 per person on concessions and there were at least 35,000 empty seats today.

They lost potential revenue.

15,000 (unsold tickets) x $40 = $600,000

35,000 (empty seats) x $14 (concessions) = $490,000

$1.1 million is a lot of money to be left on the table for the UTAD.

The point you're missing is that the money the football program brings in funds most of the other sports.

That is one of the reasons the UTAD is in such a bad financial position.

A portion of the 85,000 sold tickets were donated to youth football programs today so the 85,000 tickets sold is misleading.

Distributed should be used instead of sold. Plus, there are faculty tickets which are reduced plus comp tickets, etc.
