CBS Sports Interview with Butch Jones

so a current top-15 power program is one that has had 4 straight losing seasons and 3 straight years without a bowl appearance? If that's the case then you're right and I'm clueless

Considering you just said a program that plays in a garbage heap and is currently facing more than one scandal could be considered a better program than UT - I'll go with the latter.

that team embarrassed us last season and even beat us the year before. As you posted before

I recall that.

I also recall them winning a whopping 5 games with a head coach that was in his 11th year.

I watched a UT coach with 16yrs accomplish the 5-win total too.

you're trying to argue that facilities make us a top program while ignoring anything happening on the field. In what world does that make sense?

Didn't I just give you the Missouri win total for 2012?

If I were ignoring recent win totals I'd have us in the top 10 close to top 5.

We are currently a top 15 program. Historically? Closer to the top 5.

We could have 3 more 5 win seasons and still be in that 15-25 range due to donors, facilities, brand, and fan base alone.

College football fans don't care about donors. Fans don't care about facilities. Fans barely care about tradition. All these things might make Tennessee still a top 15 job, for a coach who likes a challenge and isn't intimidated by recruiting, but as far as fans in general are concerned, our national profile is zero. We're a has-been. Any story aimed at a general national audience is going to treat us like that until and unless we start winning again. It sucks but it's true.

We're in the same "traditional powerhouses but not current powerhouse" programs like, IMO:

Michigan

Penn State

Nebraska

The benefit you have as a program like UT or those 3 are 3 back-to-back-to-back 11 win seasons and you're a powerhouse again.

South Carolina, as I noted, just had 3 back-to-back great seasons and they're still an afterthought. That's just the way it is.

What I really liked is when he said that they would not recruit guys just to fill the class up last yr. That goes to show that he goes after the players that fits his system. Butch gets it!

Gonna disagree with the statement in bold. At least in the SEC, tradition still matters, and in a big way. This ain't the PAC 10+2. As someone else stated, a couple of winning seasons and we are right back in the National Power category.

Love the icon, btw. Hoping Dimitroff and co. buy us some linemen and get us back in the hunt.

Yes, but this was a national story addressed at a national audience. And nationally speaking we're off the radar. When's the last time we were relevant nationally? The week before Darren McFadden ran down our throats in 2006?

I'd wager heavily that in a national poll of people who call themselves college football fans, South Carolina would be considered to be a bigger power now than Tennessee. Which is appalling, but that's the way it is. You are what you've done lately. When's the last time we were ranked in the top 15?

Vid not available now for some reason. Using Firefox.

Works in IE 10.0. With Adobe Flash 12

Must be IE. I got Firefox and Flash 12, video played immediately on page load. Try shutdown of the computer, reboot after 10 seconds and see if access occurs. Windows and IE have a history of holding memory hostage after certain functions. In other words you don't get memory back after closing or discontinuing a program or operation. I got 24GB on my computer that was designed for game players but I use only for work related stuff. Yet at times I get out of memory messages or refusal to run a function even when all I did was switch from MS Word to WordPerfect or simply closed a video editor.

I'm a UT grad and total homer, but if you want to argue our national relevance you should look at this graphic. It is our 2014 SEC schedule ranked by winning streaks against each team. It is nauseating.
