Did you know that Conference USA evolved from the old Metro Conference. A great basketball league that had Louisville, Memphis, Cincinnati, DePaul and Georgia Tech. A couple of others I can't remember.
Saint Louis was early Metro.
FSU was Metro until they joined the ACC.
Marquette wasn't in the Metro, but they got in during the Great Midwest metamorphosis before C-USA.
You’re going old school. VA Tech was sort of the Metro conference. Did VA Tech go straight to AC or did they make a stop in the Big East, first?
I think they did a Big East stint.

Still a NC, but a perfect example of the luck involved. Most teams who win a NC need help.
Even bad calls are luck if they go your way.

I'll take that PI against Syracuse in the 98 opener every time. Give us a 5th down like 1990 Colorado and I'll take that, too. The other 70-100 plays a game aren't all luck, and some of them don't go our way.

This thread is a nice walk down memory lane. It was a long time ago and I still remember that season like it was yesterday. Great times!

I have a bit of a story about that season. Back in the day in my baseball days I also worked for the Smokies. I actually ran the home clubhouse the summer of '96. Chris Weinke was still in the Jays farm system at the time and spent part of the season in Knoxville. He always had a football in his locker and nearly every day I would go out and throw the football with him and run some routes on the field at Bill Meyer Stadium (which I believe has since been torn down). He left baseball after that year and enrolled at FSU. After being a back up in '97 during the summer of '98, I saw that he had been named the starter at FSU and I sent him an email wishing him good luck so long as he didn't play Tennessee in the national title game. lol. Little did I know that would actually come to pass or that he would go on to win the Heisman Trophy a couple years later (ironically just edging out Heup). Of course, he got hurt in November during their game against UVA and didn't get to play in the national championship game against us. But it was a fascinating personal connection to that game, season for me that made it a little extra special.

Original Metro 7 I think was GaTech StLouis, Memphis, Tulane Cincy, Louisville, FlaSt...don't think DePaul was in there...they added VaTech at some point. It gets garbled with the great Midwest and C-USA iterations.

Actually Tennessee wasn’t the only team in the country to finish undefeated in 1998. How has the media been downplaying Tennessee all year long? They were ranked fourth in the country when they went to Arkansas. People were praising Nico and the offense early in the year. Then once the passing game started to struggle, they started praising the defense.
The victim mentality is critically important to alot of these guys, regardless of the facts. The fact is that we are the 2nd highest ranked team with 2 losses in both polls. That's respect whether people want to admit it or not. (the highest ranked 2 loss team is UGA to whom we lost head to head).
