Whats you guys opinion so far on recruiting? Alost of these guys may not be well known, but it seems like we are going for character a little more this season vs past years where the focus seemed to be solely on 5 stars...

Im impressed with the route we are taking so far, I know some of you will bash me for saying so but, Id rather have some guys with class (98' group) to build on. I really think Ol' Phil is trying his best to turn the program back in the right direction, and have nothing but optomism when it comes to the future of volunteer football...

I think it is good. We can still land big time recruits(Berry, Donald, Smith, Austin, etc.), but now we've prioritized a players character higher than their star rating. Star rating is nothing more than potential in alot of cases. I'll take a coachable, hard-working 3* over an egomaniacal stubborn-ass 5* any day.

Good point warrior, thats the way I feel...

I think Volunteer football neeeds a change of direction, Ive been a fan since 85'. I remember watching the game vs Miami where we were down something like 35-0 at half, and we regrouped to come out on top. Im hoping that the same thing happens this season as far as rebounding. Not too many schools can boast a good fan base with the history and tradition that we have. Im looking forward to getting our swagger back and the atmosphere that we had back in the 80's and 90's.

Not exactly the way things happened, but I admire your optimism.

Yeah, its all about perception. People think that if the player isn't 4* or 5* that a kid can't play but that is far from the truth. There are many reasons other than talent that a kid will be highly or lowly ranked.

Optomism is a great thing, we need more of that stuff around here. And I was 8, but id like a history lesson if you have one....lol

:D We actually trailed 7-0, but led 21-7 at the half. But that was 20 years ago and all anybody needs to know is that we beat the crap out of Miami.

There havent been many players who weren't 4 and 5 star recruits who ended up becoming all-sec. Not many at all. A few notable exceptions, doesn't nullify what the rest of the statistics tell you.

I have to believe that a season like we had last year could be a great thing, I believe it was a wakeup call for everyone associated with Vol-Ball. I keep up with everything orange, and have since as long as I can remember. Maybe Im too optomistic, but the changes ive seen everywhere in VolCamp, from recruiting.... overall attitude from players and coaches, and the focus leads me to believe that we are heading back to the top where we belong, and I have to tell you....Im looking forward to it.

And like I said, we can still land studs. We still have quite a few big timers looking at us(at every position). We should land a top 10 class. We just have to coach them.

Exactly so far what we have is a solid base and now we need to get some big names and to make it a very good class. Chris Donald and Harrison Smith should commit soon that's a good start, then we'll see how it goes w/ players like Lennon Creer, Tony Logan, Eric Berry just to name a few. How we do on the field this year will dictate how our class looks at the end of the year.

We still have plenty of time to land the big fish, the guys we have to this point have character written all over them....

We don't need that. These kinds of comments make things turn into flames and the like. He did present compelling evidence. Let's wait for a rebuttal or agreement.

Enough with OWNING each other.

Bill Battle was the coach that believed in recruiting model citizens, preferable instate. He rode Dickey' talent from 11 win seasons to losing to V'bilt!!! :disappointed:

Thats an impressive list, but I was referring to the players UT has recruited in the past. UT has not been noted for developing 2 and 3 star players. The only recent player UT has had is the one you mentioned, Jason Hall. Most of UT best players have been their higher recruited players the majority of the time.

There is already a team in the SEC that has a roster full of 2 and 3 star recruits every year, and they haven't been noted for their success in the SEC, thats Vanderbilt.

How many teams in the SEC have won an SEC championship that didnt have a roster loaded with 4 and 5 star talent? LSU, and GA are loaded with 4 and 5 star players every year they have been the 2 most dominant programs in the SEC this decade. Auburn also has recruited well.

I just dont see the argument that your going to develop an SEC championship team, from a team of 3 star players. I dont see any other schools in the SEC winning championships that way. Teams that recruit the worst in the SEC, i.e. Vanderbilt, usually end up finishing with the worst record.

I was watching a coaches shop the other night and some thing Marv Levy said kinda hit me. He was explaining how they went for solid people in the draft and ability was second. If we are taking this type of approach then I'm fine with it.

His quote: If you have ability without character you will lose.

I believe that also, theres nothing wrong with bringin' in a group of guys that can be a positive influence in the locker room and on the guys who were highly recruited that think they are invincible. Seems like we are weeding out the thugs and replacing them with quality guys...I like it.
